1 v1 Builds? (WvW/PvP builds in general)
I think apoth regen bunker is the best for 1v1.
Or maybe even shortbow traps.
Any power build won’t have the necessary condition removal/toughness/vitality.

Is Trapper really a viable choice against stealthing opponents let alone wars?
Is Trapper really a viable choice against stealthing opponents let alone wars?
Not really in open field combat but it might be worthwhile in the JP with the amount of chokes you can exploit to one’s advantage.
Both spirits and traps are viable in PvP. Can’t attest to dueling though.
As you stated the main builds in OS are :
1. D/P Thiefs and other variants
2. Pu Mesmers
3. Nuke necros
4 .Condi warriors
I usually thend to change some utilities/triats before duelling, here are some builds :
Build against thiefs or any class who uses burst damage
Against condition based builds
Those are not perfect builds, I think there are better ones, but I can have fun in os with them… I would love an armor with stats Vit/Condi/Healing to have more chances to beat necros/ perplexity engi/mes/thiefs
Anyway it’s all about managing your evades/combo/pets, if you do it right you have a good chance of winning against almost every build ( there are some cheesy build i cannot manage do beat )
The thing cool about bringing my ranger in OS is that everybody wants to fight me, like a bunny in a field full of foxes ( doesnt happen with my mesmer XD )

As always
BM bunker still works.. and still eats most people

Nice build, but is it good against competent d/p thiefs or shatterer mesmers ? do you swap empathic bond for bark skin against them ?

Vitality healing condi dmg is shamans
Vitality healing condi dmg is shamans
Ops.. I ment Healing power as main stat, cuz I like to run with a lot of healing power

You can kill D/P thieves just fine..Its just a matter of time before they die basically.
Mesmer’s are zero problem as well, Because Mesmer’s generally don’t run squat for Condition Removal, and what condition removal they have doesn’t keep up with the amount of conditions BM Bunker bunker puts out.
You also never swap to Barkskin..

Zerker =/= all power builds.
A mix of Knights, Cavalier/valkyrie and assassins will be quite tanky, and deal tremendous damage.
Clerics tank with shouts is very possible, but you do commit yourself to a long and painstaking process when trying to kill something. Albeit, your direct damage, is not as poor as you may think.
PVT – with shouts, not as effective as clerics, but if you mix the two, you get so much HP and healing it is outright ridiculous.
Valkyrie/Cavaliers – basically only usable if you run remorseless and 100% crit on swap sigil. It is situational, but it works i guess, somehow.
Currently @ some T1 server in EU

Indeed, martial mastery is more practical then bark skin and empathic bond – true story.

This is the best 1 vs 1 build I’ve come up with and I feel that right now it’s quite optimal. I’ve used it in PvP and WvW conversely. Now, in 1 vs 1 regardless of your build you truly depend on your own skill + reaction time; that aside, what does my build bring to the table? An emphasis on damage matched with survival.
Survival factor: Signet of stone, bark skin, healing power, high toughness, a healthy amount of vitality, superior sigil of energy, lightning reflexes, signet of renewal, and don’t forget your pet!
Damage factor: Conditions + pet + well executed burst + your very own reflexes and battle intuition. My personal rotation depends on the enemy, but overall this ranger is quite tanky so I know I can lure enemies into a strong damage rotation.
A typical high damage rotation will be like this:
Entangle + wolf’s howl at the same time, bonfire on their location, plus serpent’s strike (for the poison) which will also place you behind them, followed by your wolf’s leap which should stun them, and some melee, swap weapons to concussion shot (from behind), followed by poison volley, swap to spider in case they want to escape the entangle’s immobilize so you snare them right away. By now your sharpened edges should kick in and you can set yourself at range in case your enemy decides to pull you into their own rotation somehow; this rotation (without entangle) should be available to you after 20 seconds, so if your enemy does catch you off guard and keeps you in melee range, swap weapons and drop bonfire, if you really need to you can use signet of stone and mitigate all the damage, or you can save it for an uh-oh situation, but I personally like to use troll unguent and mitigate most of the damage that way.
General advice as a ranger in a 1 vs 1? every action you take counts, don’t waste your skills in a useless rotation that your enemy can escape, you need to reel them into it, make them feel like they have a chance, be brave and risk some damage in order to force them to waste some skills on you, that’s how you add your flavor into the fray.
Disclaimer? heck yes, you’re fighting against some sturdy condition damage build? swap to Empatic bond, fighting that annoying hit and run warrior in a very open space? consider swapping your shortbow for axe/dagger, both your pets to spiders and your elite to RaO. The key of the build is in survival via signets, healing power, high toughness and decent condition removal; plus damage via a non stop stacking of conditions with a rotation with clever pet usage. I’ve had lots of success with it but success depends entirely on you, so best of luck!

Notice that the power (2,012) is not included with the 1,134 of the LB so in the end you are going to have 3,146
This is a power build, really tanky, you still have nice damage and alot more survivabilty in my opinion, really effective for a 1vs1

I swap signet of stone for signet of the hunt when I am running from point A to point B, I keep my eyes peeled for enemies and I am quick to change back to signet of stone the instant I see someone. Plus if you really need to get away from someone you can use sword 2, lightning reflexes, sword 2 to make a huge gap.

Apothecary and healing power seems totally wasted on that though, no healing spring and no other regen application at all and not even signet of the wild so why the healing power? for troll? you gain 50h per tick for that might aswell go full dire or anything else than apothecary really.

Honestly that’s a good point, however given that full dire gear is a bit pricey for me to get, I haven’t had the chance to test with it other than in PvP. The benefit I get from this setup not only applies in 1 vs 1, I like to run with it in WvW and whenever I am in a group I benefit greatly from having higher healing power from the shared regen that you get in those situations, that’s truly the main reason I chose apothecary over dire. However if you do have full dire feel free to test my build and let me know how it rolls.

After all this is the best condi-build I have and despite it being honed for 1 vs 1, it does really well in group situations added that I use more methods for healing power usage (shout build perhaps), I should be in a good spot with the apothecary gear.

I’m not saying you need/should change to a build with regen and wild, only that you need atleast regen and preferably wild aswell for there to be any reason whatsoever to invest in healing power otherwise it’s simply a completely wasted stat, as I said before you gain 50h/s for the duration of troll currently that is like, yeah you get the picture.
You could always stick with what you got now too and just use some mix of Carrion/Dire for the armor aswell would only mean more damage and more survivability since you’d increase your healthpool alot that way.

I made a full Dire setup. I’d stick with your build. Full Dire for Ranger isn’t all that. I mean, it wrecks in 1vs1 when your opponent doesn’t bring any condi removal, but against any other class with on demand condi removal, its not as great as you think. The only problems I had was against Shout Warriors w/ Soldier Runes and some Necro’s(Corrupt boon and ability to transfer conditions to the Ranger. Maxed out I was at 2200 condition damage

I understood what you meant by the wasted healing power, but in order to repurpose the apothecary gear I would reserve it to use it on a regen build instead. Regarding dire the overall price shouldn’t exceed 20~30 gold to get the insignias from TP, that being said it’s a better choice than healing power providing me with ~50 extra healing power. I’ll play around with the stats online and see if full dire or carrion/dire works better.
@ItIsFinished
Did you set your traits the way I did? I make up for the condi-removal builds by traiting 30 into marksmanship, that’s truly only to get the benefit of signets which are imo very vital in 1 vs 1, but at the same time the added power (~2500 total with gear) does pack the steady punch you need as you apply conditions, so far it’s worked decently well against condition removal builds… but then again there very skilled full regen/condi removal players out there, those are a pain to bring down because now you depend on your skill alone to get around their rotation and overcome them. FYI Shout warriors are alright once you get an on demand cripple on them, using double spiders or double canines for example.

I just took a look at the build and modified it thanks to your suggestions, check it out:
It does look like a more solid setup, especially with the added power, conditions duration and vitality. It’s just a small step up from what I had before but fighting anti-condition builds seems more manageable, as well as pure power builds. The only clear difficulty will be against other condition builds, on a fight where you don’t know your enemy, swapping bark skin for empathic bond is a very critical choice that is hard to make on the fly.

I am going to try this in WvW – I have to try something.
Which do you use for thieves most often?
If I had the power in WvW I have in PvE that’d be something, right now I am getting owned and I am not a bad player.
