A question about "Viper's nest"
Anet “buffed” the skill with a 1.5s field. Nobody uses it because it was poorly designed.

More like nobody uses it because ranger have better poison dealing options like Poison Volley, Serpent’s Strike and Stalker’s Strike. Any trapper would take spike trap and frost trap over Viper’s Nest anyday.

So you waste your extra evades for applying poison? gg
Not to mention traited vipers nest can give nearly permanent poison uptime alone if not cleansed and the short uptime of a combo field. Its a important tool for trapper when up against warrior/guard or other classes with lots of regen, i take it over spike trap (almost)anyday.
Full melee Ranger since August 2012
Hey, first of all i have just bought the game so im really newbie at this one.
I just got the skills “Viper’s nest” and noticed it is a combo field. I used this skill and saw that whenever an enemy hits the trap it releases it’s poision and the field is disappearing very quickly(1-2 seconds) so my question is why would someone use this skill in order to combo it with finishers if the field last so little time?Or did I get something wrong about combo?
Thanks in advance
Very good questions. I think the value is more in the blast and leap finishers than in the condition. Both blast and leap apply weakness—which is a silent killer. I think this would work well when facing hard hitting melee opponents with GS. Drop it and leap finish it with skill 3. You might have just enough time to leap out and in with 1h sword as well. I personally find fire aura from fire trap more deadly, though… I wish poison would stack in intensity like bleed…

Viper’s Nest should apply torment, while keeping the poison combofield, or even better, they should create a new combofield for torment. Problem solved.

You don’t have enough time, which is… a bizarre design choice.

If you’re going for an all out damaging trapper build, you would take spike, fire, and vipers along with poison master. Although it’s more of a kill them before they kill you type of build, high risk, but very high reward.
It is not what you do, but how and why you do it that counts.
As a trap Ranger for a year and a half now, Viper’s Nest has always been on my Utility Bar. I didn’t want to waste my evades for the sake of applying poison. Roaming nowadays we always bump into players/groups who have great condi removal though…
I usually either blast finish with a warhorn (sometimes I run Axe-Torch, Sw-WH), or evade with Sw2 first, viper’s nest, then leap back in (the weakness makes sense cause you’re jumping back into melee range). Just like people with common sense who don’t use fire trap when they already have Torch, there’s also some reason when Viper’s Nest I felt not necessary when I run shortbow as it has a short cooldown poison on the second skill.
Anyway, it’s fun running trappers, especially Celestial. Running full ascended celeses a month after they came out. Auto, auto, torch 4, spike trap, viper’s nest, axe 2, axe 3, wait for torch 5 when they run out of burning, swap weapon etc and with torment sigil, sigil of strength (I prefer this over battle since crit rate good enough to maintain 5-6 might stacks permanently if keep hitting), You have nearly every single condition on the your enemy in such a short time (not even using krait runes). Now with axe getting might stacks, my build will be rocking perma 9-10 mights if I just auto (with no runes giving might)…
