I will repeat: PETS ARE BROKEN

Why anyone wants more of something broken and not working properly is beyond me.

The big changes I want to see is ranger pets deleted from the game and the associated damage output shifted to the ranger. This might make or weapons and utilities actually useful. Anything else is simply a waste of time.

So when taking this idea into account and then hearing the reason why the sword chain attack behaves the way it does, it doesn’t boost much confident in the balance team as it would seem that the Ranger profession hasn’t been fully integrated into the game yet.

Pets have been hidden due to rising Player complaints.

Yeah… I don’t have any hope. The fact that they said they’re going to nerf zerker confirms they are nerfing it to make the other builds look better. Same reason they nerfed the shortbow to make the longbow look better. That is the lazy way to do it. The band aid approach that they have used on other things. Infact, the Devs from the livestream have squashed my hope that they would give us an option out of having a permenant pet because that would mean more than a band aid and it is painfully obvious by their actions that the band aid approach is the preferred method of handling anything in this game. As Jon Sharp said on a STOG it is all about shifting preception… which means it is easier to change peoples views of something than actually fixing anything. What makes me think this is really going down hill is that the Devs said that the zerker nerf is the first step in pve changes… and if that is the road they are going down it’s a one way street in the wrong direction.

So, yeah, “amazing” means something totally different to me than it does the Devs.

RNG is a bell curve. Better hope you’re on the right side.

I remember being pretty amazed that fixing a visual glitch on shortbow somehow nerfed its damage considerably.

Making the pet AI more responsive and functioning would be amazing, but thats more like a bug fix.

Amazing to me would be:

- a revamp of the trait lines (to add more synergy since with many changes some things no longer make sense – ie martial mastery in condition damage line),

- revamp traps (better mechanic than just being inferior necro marks),

- pet mechanic revamp (my idea – option for spirit pet – passive only pet that gives a passive buff),

or something involving a greater synergy with the pet that doesnt involve its AI (actually become pet for a duration, pet gets limited block ability on passive, mode for pet fights side by side and doesnt skip a beat with its attacks, that kind of thing).

Ranger only needs 2 things.
1)Ability to stow pet permanently and buff the ranger instead of the stupid lousy ai pet.
2)Some form of stability not on an elite with a long cooldown and not needing 30 trait points for a gm trait you don’t want. Then still have to use a utility to get that stability.

On this patch they only made bug fixes in the skills, among the next 3 patches we’ll have the balance one.

Those folks (like one above) who say Ranger is for Range. I don’t see it that way. I see it as in the term range to describe a large area (cattle range etc). It is someone who lives off the land and utilises it to his advantage. A survivalist, or outdoorsman.

I can’t see them ever giving us longer than 1500 range (which we can trait for), and the engineer, mesmer and several other classes can match that. There’s no point asking for more.

For me: sword NEEDS fixing so it allows us to dodge. Rooting is not the issue, it is a chain-of-command thing that will not allow us to make a dodge action whilst another process is in operation. Pets need a power and HP or toughness buff plus a stowability. Maybe if we were able to ‘assign’ a universal upgrade (mark, talisman etc) to them, it would make them more worthwhile.

Other than that, I can’t see much wrong.

I might have been too laconic in my post, please let me expand my point of view starting off with boring yet accurate quote:

“Rangers rely on a keen eye, a steady hand, and the power of nature itself. Unparalleled archers, rangers are capable of bringing down foes from a distance with their bows. With traps, nature spirits, and a stable of loyal pets at their command, rangers can adapt to any situation.”

Of course this does not mean that ranger is RDPS class only and you are right in saying that there’s more to them than obvious archetype.
However the current state of the game forces rangers to specialize in mdps tactics since range path is not viable at the moment. At the same time warriors and thiefs are doing great with their stick and string weapons – I’d like a class that should be first and foremost outstanding in range tactic to be able to dish out the same (if not noticeably more) amount of damage as, well, mdps classes.
Don’t you find it oddly ironic that you’d be better off playing long-range warrior or mid-range thief than any-range Ranger?

I’m not asking for extra range (Eagle Eye trait is good enough) nor for removing close combat traits and weapons. All I’m asking for is to fix long range dps and path for this supposedly famed for it class.

It’s not unreasonable, is it?

Your right, that is half of the pet problems, the other half is the fact that our pets will not hit a moving target because it has to stop to do an animation before it attacks, so when the attack actually happens, the player you where attacking is not there anymore. This isn’t as much as a problem in PvE as it is in PvP and even worse in WvWvW. However, what are the chances of either of these two things being fixed? According to Anet’s description of the class, we are suppose to be a ranged pet class. It’s funny that a ‘designed’ pet ranged class has to resort to going into Melee combat in order to try and keep up with the DPS from other classes. It’s also funny how a Melee dps class, which was designed for melee dps such as warriors, can do more damage then ranger’s at range. They got the hole thing backwards.

It’s funny, is it not? It’s why my sylvari archer concept who wields Kudzu is a Warrior, not a Ranger. The damage is absurd on Warrior longbow.

And I agree. Pets need to be able to hit targets on the move, otherwise they’re still useless even if they can survive a nuclear blast.

And then your DPS decreases by 30% which puts you in a handicap compaired to all other professions. What other profession out there, especially in WvW, has to deal with a 30% handicap? Because that’s what happens when you pull your pet from battle or if your pet dies, has the same effect, your dealing 30% less damage. And now with the new gear out that 30% should be much higher of a handicap but we’ll keep at at 30% just for simplicity. Now answer my question, what other profession has to deal with a 30% dps handicap?

I like this idea a lot.

Another thing to consider in regards to F3, is where they (Anet) positions the pet when we call them back. Perhaps they should be placed behind us, or at least a lot closer to us?

I would be happy if they just made the AI move the pet around traps and red circles unless there’s no other choice. I’m pretty careful with my pet and do call it back with F3. But most of my pet deaths are due to me hitting F3 and the pet walking right through a red circle or a trap.

The biggest facepalm pet death so far was at Tequatl. I was hit with one of those poison circles and busy getting myself out of it when the pet got hit by another poison circle. F3 and F4 are useless when you and the pet are both standing in a death circle. By some miracle I managed to get my character out and hit F4 to swap pets just before it died.

While I was busy congratulating myself for saving my pet, I forgot I had autoattack on. My character resumed firing her bow, and the fresh pet ran straight to Tequatl – right through the two poison circles I’d just escaped – and promptly died.

I want a semi-intelligent pet. Not a suicide bomber.

somehow I get the feeling that these “amazing things for rangers” will be like the “incredible new items in the gem store”.

I bet they introduce that “it’s just testing” monthly payment model with subscription perks before they do their balance and content patch so they can try to financially “lock in” as many (disappointed) players as they can from jumping ship this spring.

New Main- 80 Thief – P/P- Vault Spam Pro

221 hours over 1,581 days of bank space/hot pve/lion’s arch afk and some wvw.
