Hey guys,
I have been inspired by all the naysayers to post and explain a build i have been using recently . I would like to give a big shout to lordhelmos.7623 and his catsassination build for inspiring me to actually go through with this build and playing and testing it .

The logic :
-The ranger is stuck with the pet, for better or for worse , overwhelming opinion is for worse at the moment
-The only good innate advantage the ranger has , is that the class has no advantage what so ever… it just does all things moderately well , but it does them at the same time
-solid benefits to swapping weapons and mutual boon sharing with the pet when traited
-awesomeness of the cat pet class

So this build aims to play on those not so advantages to their full advantage …. haha

The Traits : 0 15 10 15 30
The selectable bonuses : pet prowess, vigorous healing , nature protection , rending attacks , natural healing , commanding voice

The build :

The build of gear is not really important and it is left to players preference and their budget . There are a few goals however :
1)one should aim to have over 1500 toughness
2)one should aim to have over 600 healing
3)one should aim to have under 400 condition damage

I personally run a full knight gear , with clerics coat and divinity trinkets .

The runes , however , are important :
Depending of whether you want to go more tank or balanced you have a choice between 2 runes . Melandru for tank , Hoelbrak for balanced *. The goal here is to get the reduced condition duration on self and combine it with Lemongrass poultry soup . This is because when not taking full wilderness survival you lose out on Emphatic bond , and thus have limited condition removal .
I am however using Hoelbrak as it dirrectly benefits my rotation, and i will explain how in the next section .

THE WEAPONS: Shortbow , Longbow , Panther, Sigils of battle on both weapons

THE SKILLS: Healing spring , signet of the wild, signet of the hunt , MATTER OF CHOICE , entangle or RaO

THE ROTATION : *
-The goal of the rotation is to keep your PANTHER in combat as long as possible , you do not utilize pet swaps unless Kuroneko is about to die . This is important to understand
-Your main advantage comes from staying in combat for more then one cycle by constantly swapping weapons and thus buffing self and pet . After the 3rd cycle you have perma 6-9 might and fury and speed uptime of 50% from weapons swapping only .
-Both the shortbow and Longbow have utilities that easy getting pet hits on enemy . Be it cripple , stun , speed , knockdown , or AOE cripple .

Say you open up with the longbow . You send your pet in first and apply pressure , if he comes to you unload hunter shot , rapid fire and if possible point blank shot . If facing mesmers or an annoying charger class like warrior or thief, Shoot barrage arround yourself . Swap to Shortbow , … unload whatever .. , switch to longbow…rinse repeat .
The end result is the 100% uptime of might and swiftness on your pet , constant CC pressure on your opponent and 50% uptime of fury . Sometimes you win, sometimes you die , as it should be .

Some practical observations
-It can be very useful to see what your opposing hero , or group is . If you see classes that are known to be good at condition damage i would advise using Signet of Renewal or Prayer to Kormir
-if you see a warrior , or general raw DPS class or group , lightning reflexes are your friend
-in WvW zerg the only thing you can really contribute is a lot of crowd controll , i suggest swapping vigorous healing for 20% survival reduction, and placing muddy terrain and entangle on . You will bring 3 AOE CC to the fight and multiple single target ones .

Final Notes
-This build is made for versatility , getting your pet to actually hit and 1v1 or 1v2 duels
-You are not a tank nor a glass cannon , but you can take hits and do good damage .
-Mesmers are a problem because they are gayy and i hate them
-warriors , engineers are food
-Thiefs can only win if they outplay you in a very tight room
-Guardians are annoying and unkillable if they went full tank, otherwise they are food .

If you need more advice on how to manage your pet , take a look at this topic

Enjoy

A build not based on just DPS? Preposterous! Don’t you know that Damage is the only thing that matters?! /sarcasm

On topic: This is a pretty interesting setup, what do you suggest for Weapon Sigils?

I’m trying this out PvE with greatsword/sword+horn and I have to say it’s worth it for fun factor big time. It’s really enjoyable, love the buffs, etc.

Thank you for this information – I don’t buy the sky is falling, Rangers are horrible talk. They are fun to play and I get the job done.

Cool build!

Just to put this info out there as well. Your pet doesn’t get the full duration of every boon you get. For example it will only get max 3 seconds fury from you. So if you cast warhorn 5 and hit yourself and your pet, your pet gets the initial 15 sec fury and instead of getting another 15 sec of fury from you only gets another 3. Making a total of 18 sec which is still a furious pet.

That’s good to know and I actually hadn’t noticed this myself despite running variations of this same build but I never gave fury much thought I liked it more cause I could feed regen to a far away pet from healing spring aswell as stacking protection, it makes your pet very strong and pretty much anything that can’t oneshot your pet is never going to kill it.

0/10/15/15/30 is what I had and I was using axe/sword+warhorn over longbow depending on situation, the same build also works really well if you swap for mostly rabid gear and go for a torch instead.

I’m curious to one thing in the OP why aim for less than 400 condition damage? that just doesn’t make any sense at all to me the more is always going to be the merrier regardless if it’s your main stat for damage or not aslong as you can apply any conditions at all, why not state what you are looking to have instead of what not?

Well the point of the build is that pet has permanent might and swiftness . Also cripple , stun and knockdown allow your pet to land hits . The ranger also contributes pressure from range , constant damage .

A nice thing with this build is that when you use the catssinassion tactic , u can swap weapons even if you are far away , the pet will still benefit from all the bonuses you would get, swiftness fury and might . Also if you pop healing spring, it will get healed , and benefit from subsequent regeneration cycles .

Well if u set the jaguar on him before he spawns the illusions the pet will stay on him . Best bet is to open up with longbow and use the barrage around yourself . The clones will be decimated . After that keep killing the clones while letting your pet chase him around .
This is how i usually fight against mesmers, but if its a mesmer+someone else , you don’t stand a chance

I found that their combined comments provided the best mesmer VS you or [mesmer + 1 player ] vs you solution. It works actually, but of course much depends on your ability to properly stay on top of the mesmer. I think chokolata’s approach is doable as long as you can micromanage your pet well enough to stay on top of the mesmer and not the illusions. Personally I find it better to keep you and your pet on top of the mesmer and avoid the illusions or destroy them with AoE damage. I also notice that mesmers like to fight close to you, so either working around their approach or staying ranged helps a lot. Someone ought to try fighting them with axe and see what happens.

I just want to say last Friday I completely re-built and re-kitted my ranger for the bow catmaster following your build recommendation.

I had a full set of temple p/v/t armour I wasn’t using, so fitted this out with runes of Hoelbrak. My trinkets and accessories were already a mix of Knight and Valkyrie, but changed over to exquisite sapphire jewels for the healing stat boost. Put in a crest of the shaman into my solider spineguard also.

Finally, I bought 2 bows with cleric stats to get healing over 600, and slotted them with battle sigils.

I have been test driving this in PvE over the past few days, and I am gobsmacked at how much damage the cats do. Most of the time there is no need to fire a shot, just swap bows to keep fury and might up and let the cat do it’s thing.

I haven’t tested this in Orr yet, and doubt I will bring this build into a dungeon, at least not with cats. I will like to see how well the ranged pets do with this build.

Anyway, cheers for the build!
It has restored some fun into playing a ranger again …

I built something similar, but I ran sword/warhorn instead of sb for call of the wild. It sucked for exactly one reason: Weapon swaps.
Dual range with traiting fury on swap actually seems more useful for fury uptime and it allows you to constantly stay on target without having to go toe to toe.
Probably gotta give the catmaster a second chance.

sword/warhorn+gs seems possible too, would pretty much give the pet 100% fury uptime.
But it will also need loads of microing, as you will be in hecical melee battles while having to look after your pet.
As you said, mixing melee and range in a bm build is a bad thing to do.

Chokolata:

Clever build that works well.

I believe using runes to extend boon duration like a lot of d/d Eles run might do very well in this build; be an effective alternative to runes of melandru/hoelbrak.

Using:

2 superior rune monk,
2 superior runes water, and
2 of either major rune sanctuary/monk/water

will give you +40% boon duration for you and your pet in theory (gonna try this setup tonight when get a chance).

To partially address the lack of condition removal lost from ditching the other runes, the superior sigil of generosity is an option (60% chance to transfer a condition to your foe on critical hit with cooldown of 10 seconds).

Boon duration only works on the ranger, not on the pet. Fortifying Bond gives fixed boon durations to the pet and (AFAIK), can’t be affected by anything. Stats from armor only affects the rangers, only points in BM and traits can affect pet stats.

Thanks for response. That actually makes sense now that I think about it if you could extend boon duration on pet in that way it would be OP.

Iā€™m gonna stick with Superior Runes of Divinity then, the 360 stat points it brings plus the 12% critical damage is too good for me to pass up (I find all other Runes too situational in comparison). When you combine Divinity runes with the Ascended Celestial (Divinity) trinkets x5 those bonus stats really add up.

Shortbow does well in full Divinity trinkets + Soldier ascended backpack + Knight armor + Berserker weapons in my opinion.

And the URL you link to says otherwise…
Also seems, you can grab and drop bundles repeatedly to stack fury and swiftness on your pet :>
the traits seem to be capped at 40 seconds, but I don’t know about fortifying bond. Might be worth looking into. Giving the pet 2 minutes of swiftness and fury seems like an interesting idea^^

Can you point out where, exactly? o_O The link says only thing that would affect it is Nature’s Bounty and that only affects the Regeneration boon. (Which is still in line with what I said about only traits and BM points affecting boon duration)

Also, good catch on the bundles. I’ve noticed that I got the switching buff whenever I gave Magg a bomb in CoF P2. Although, I don’t know what bundle will stay after you dropped it, or if it the traits have a cooldown.

-siege blueprints:D
-mines
-fireworks(?)
Tho you probably want to look after ones which are actually useful.
Can the portal gun be dropped?
There any bundles which give you boons on use AND can be dropped?
Any other stuff which triggers on weapon swap? Well, theres sigils of battle which give you 3 stacks of might for 20 sec on a 9 sec ICD. Anything else coming to mind?

Page says “this is affected by boon duration and nature’s bounty”.

I wanted to give an update on the build . I have switched runes of hoelbrak for Runes of Altruism *. I found that i dont really have much problems against condition builds as dodging when at range is much easier and you do not eat nearly as much AOE spells as you would in melee .

Runes if Altruism allow me to support my party much better , especially in dungeons and such , because when i cast Healing Spring i give fury , vigor , regeneration , might and condition cleanse to my team , every 30 seconds . I would suggest even using support pets like moas and such .

Your own dps does not suffer because you can keep up over 6 might near constantly , usually going over 10 might which is quite a lot . Also you do constant damage , are by no means a glasscannon and have quite solid utility .

Also when goofing off in WvW , keep in mind that all buffs to self are transfered to pet , so aside from buffing it with weapon swaps , you buff it with healing spring as well now .

Enjoy

I have been running this build for 3 weeks now, mainly in PvE.

I was in WvW once to do a caravan disruption daily, and was fooling around trying to capture a supply depot using only the jaguar. The cat could take down 2 of the npc defenders on it’s own, but could not manage the other 2. While doing this, seems I attracted some attention from the enemy server.

I was caught by surprise by a solo ele. Once I realised the player was there, and began firing, the cat tore into the fight with devastating results. It did not end well for the ele…

I have been using 2 amour setups depending on what I am doing. Both armour sets I had before re-speccing to this build.

Set 1: PVT with runes of melandru.
This is for tougher, condition heavy encounters. I used this while running Arah story to complete my ranger PS.

Set 2: Knight/Valkyrie mix with runes of the ranger.
This is for general PvE farming, world events, etc. I find the added precision and crit damage from the ranger runes gives some much needed DPS, and the added 5% damage while having a pet is a nice bonus.

One of my favourite thing to do now is harass the grawl in Frostgorge, near where the Jormag event takes place. I stand well back then send the cat in to clear them out. All I do is weapon swap to keep stacks of might and fury up. It really is quite something to watch.

What ascended trinkets would fit this build? ive been using this build for a while and its amazing.. altough i am right now with beserker armor (im farming the knights).

Also i cant decide what runes would fit better here… hoelbrak sounds nice, for the extra might and condition remover.. i thinks this build lacks a bit there…. also the ranger runes sound pretty nice for the extra personal damage. but i dont know if it compensates. opinions?

For trinkets, I would not waste ascended kit on a ranger, at least not until Anet gets around to properly fixing this class. If I ever get ascended, kit, it will be for my guardian.

My current ranger trinkets are also a mix of Knight and Valkyrie, with slotted Cleric jewels. Back piece is Soldier with Cleric crest

@TheMasahiro
For general PvE, the ranger runes are fine. I use them cos I already had them slotted in my Knight/Valkyrie armour and could not justify destroying them for other runes.

If you have the sigils of battle in both bows, you get more than enough might through weapon swaps, so you really don’t need Hoelbrak runes.

Ranger runes are expense, but if you have the gold, then go for them. If not, then go with Hoelbraks or the Melandru ruins for more condition/stun mitigation. both are cheaper than ranger runes.

@Chokolata
I am not convinced on the need for altruism runes.
Along with Cleric jewels/crest slotted in my accessories, both my bows are Cleric. My healing power is just over 600, and this seems to be enough for what I do with my ranger these days.

Ah thanks .. I guess this explains why I don’t see the need for runes of altruism.

I don’t do WvW, and would never consider bringing this build into a dungeon, unless pets were seriously improved. Also, I stopped bringing my ranger into dungeons months ago, my guardian does the dungeons runs.

I switched to this build as a last resort ‘fluff’ build to do dailies and easy PvE content. It was either this or stop playing the class entirely. I don’t even bring this build to farm Orr ..

Actually this build is fairly strong in dungeons . Sometimes your pet will die , but consider this :

-buffing yourself with might and fury with weapon swapping , all the while maintaining solid dps as you are using double bows .

-you can buff your party with healing spring (3 might stacks , fury , regeneration , vigor , condi cleanse ) and jungle stalker roar (5 might )

-this build is getting a direct buff with the next patch (pet life expectancy and f2 cast speed)

You can easily run axe + warhorn instead of either bow for dungeons and farming , as you still remain at ranger but have a bit less dps but more AOE and buffing AOE spells

With this dual bow BM build my DPS from bows is crap. I used to run a power/crit build and I noticed a huge difference for the worse in my bow damage. My cat does all the damage, I basically stand and watch and hope the cat gets the enemy down before it gets to me. This is why I use this build only for easy PvE content.

In a dungeon, this would be a disaster because the cats can die in seconds, leaving me with stacking might on 2 pea-shooters.

As for the rumored buff to pets, whatever Anet does, it will not be enough to make pets viable in dungeons. They would need to make pets invulnerable to AoE, and/or with such a high health pool, they would be over-powered in any other aspect of the game.

As for group support in dungeons, why would I consider my ranger for this roll when I have guardian??

I am not rubbishing the build, it is reasonably fun to play with easy PvE content and it keeps me playing my ranger, at least for now. However, I do not consider it a build for anything more serious than doing dailies, some dragon events and harassing the grawl in Frostgorge.

I think you give too much to the numbers that you are seeing . This is in essence a bunkerish build , but if you maintain 10+ might on yourself , with only your own buffs , and considering your durability and sustain , i would say that your damage has little down time . And you are very very useful to your party , which ranger berserker builds ARE NOT.

But sure , keep looking at those pretty white numbers surrounded by red borders … weee

Before the QZ ‘change’, a power/crit ranger used to be useful in dungeons provided the player knew how to dodge and survive. My roll was to keep up a steady stream of ranged DPS, with the odd melee intervention, to pull, kite bosses when necessary, and to stay up. I used 2 devourers on passive so they would not cause too much trouble and they had a reasonable chance of staying alive.

Yes, this was not support roll. Support was not the reason my ranger was there. This was one the reasons why I leveled a guardian.

Sorry, I just do not see a roll for this build in dungeons. By sacrificing other areas, the main focus of this build is on the pet, and pets in dungeons simply do not work. In open PvE, and perhaps in WvW, this is not so much of a problem, and one can still have some fun with the build.

It will take a massive re-think on Anet to redesign the pet so they have a roll in dungeons. I don’t see this happening soon, certainly not in this next update.

Hey, the good thing about this build is that it still keeps me playing the ranger for some content.

The alternative was to abandon a toon with over 1200 hrs on it ..

@bri pets might need some love for sure but it’s not like it can’t be done I run with double jaguars in dungeons and it’s actually only a few bossfights where you need to switch them in my experience and they very rarely die on me, it can work very well even with the squishiest of pets on most fights atleast if you are BM.

@Manekk, I am BM ( I use the build described on the 1st page of this thread) and use 2 cats in open PvE. Been running this build since after the March update.

Around 2 weeks ago I did Arah story to finish my ranger PS. I started with 2 cats, both were dead within seconds at the very first trash mob encounter. Had to swap one cat out for a devourer so I could have something up.

I tried bringing out the cat again, with the same results even on passive mode. The only section of the dungeon where it could stay up for any period was on the airship, so I to use the devourer for most of the dungeon. I did crap damage since the build is dependent on high DPS pets, and my bows are now pea-shooters.

Made it though the dungeon story ok, but mainly because of the other classes in the party. I wasn’t able to contribute very much in an easy dungeon story path. So, bringing this build and the cats into a anything more difficult is out of the question for me.

If you can keep your cats alive in CoE, then my hat goes off to you.

Haven’t done Arah in a long time, not at all on my second and new ranger actually and I don’t think I was BM in there on the first one so can’t comment but most dungeons work fine CoE too pretty sure I’ve gone through all encounters there without cats dying.

That said the parts that annoy me are the ones where you literally can’t do anything about them dying even while they are passive at your side and they do exist like the boss in HotW with the 2 quaggans his stupid aoe rains are so easy to avoid and yet my kitten pets very often just run straight into it even while passive and explode in a second that’s not just cats though I’ve had devourers on follow that run the opposite way from me straight into the poo and die.

It’s the thing that it’s almost like tossing a dice whether your pet makes it or not in some fights that kitten people off I think wich I both understand and concur with even if I do feel most fights work also with a cat aslong as you pay attention.

I have been running a regen/tanky (0|0|30|10|30) build and want to switch over to this for a bit and see how it works. My current gear is Cleric (PTH – head, shoulder and hands) and Soldiers (PTV- chest, legs, feet) all with Runes of Altruism. I have an amulet of Protection (PTH) and a karka shell but other than that my jewelry is whatever I had at the time. I have been running with GS / Axe+warhorn all clerics with water sigils and energy on the horn. I am going to pick up two sigils of battle but where should I be looking stat wise for my trinkets and longbow/shortbow to get the most out of this build. My current stats are toughness 1738, healing 908, Conditions Damage 325 and Crit at 13%. Any help would be appreciated.

I found out that showing only player names in settings helps a lot with tracking the real mesmer!
Nevertheless i hate them. Especially if there r 2 of them.

This ^^ Helps a lot!
