DISCLAIMER: My Ranger is only 44, but I don’t see my concerns getting any better at higher levels.

It seems to me that my Ranger’s damage is split 60/40 with my pet. Now, I understand that as a pet class, my pet has to take away from my damage, but it feel like that’s too much of a split. I feel 80/20 would be more appropriate.

Also, it seems I don’t do steady damage. On my Necro, I can kill a level appropriate creature 1v1 in about half the time my Ranger can do the same. Granted Runes, Sigils, etc. would speed up the process, but I don’t think it would be to that degree.
I know Rangers don’t have strong burst, but unless it’s my playstyle (I run around Longbow/Greatsword or Shortbow/Sword+dagger), I find a problem when I can’t handle more than 2-3 creatures at once.

Can anyone give me an idea? Also, I do PvE. I haven’t gotten into Fractals yet, but I don’t enjoy WvW enough to do it often, and I just don’t currently have an interested in sPvP. So all my decisions are PvE based.

Traps are amazing when you’re wanting to farm events. Fire Trap absolutely melts mobs. I’d suggest a trapper SB/S+D (or torch) build, unless you plan on primarily running dungeons where the effectiveness of condition builds varies on your team. But for world exploration or while leveling, traps are amazing.

Trappers also do well in WvW. Traps are especially useful when facing off against Thieves or other classes that like to get in close and can be hard to predict for new players.

As for Fractals/dungeons, you will probably want to avoid condition-based builds and bring more group-friendly skills.

I don’t really recall having too many problems with leveling up like that. Necro has a lot of AoE effects so they handle those 3+ mobs much better than we do while a vast majority of our skills are around #1 spam and skirmishing. Do you run traps at all? I found traps very handy while leveling. Ranger power scale terribly due to our pets yet condition DPS is untouched (go figure) so we’re pretty good with that but power builds remain rather lack-luster, especially at low levels. There’s a lot to consider about what’s affecting your kill time that I can’t see but its probably just from not having enough direct damage, which is something that can change even depending on anything from the type of mob you’re hitting to your gear. I did level a Ranger using almost exclusively the Longbow though and I don’t recall having too many problems although I do remember some foes just refusing to take much damage due to high Vit. I wish I could tell you exactly whats slowing you down but I just don’t have enough information. I would get some Condi gear and try traps and see how that works for you, try running different pets, and putting traits into more offensive stats (if they aren’t already).

If you’re wanting to be able to take down multiple NPCs at once, i’d suggest you run with a trap build plus a axe/torch as your main weapons. This set up alone will melt mobs down fast. The axe bounces up to 3 targets and your torch #5 pretty much burns anything that steps inside.
