Don't get your hopes up for State of the Game
I want the ability to turn off that Swiftness, Its of zero use…Half the time i’m not close enough to be hit by it, and it doesn’t actually help that bird Catch the target….It either needs a far better animation (like completely removing the animation) or i want the ability to disable it
If you ever played FF12, the gambit system in that game would be great for pets.
It’s basically a bunch of if then else statements that lets you create an AI routine for your companion.
Maybe their higherups (marketing department?) has something shoved up them, that forces the balance team to listen to stupid “trends” rather than actual good balance.
If it’s true, they will only loose from this in long term. No one wants to play unbalanced game that favors some classes over others. You just switch to “prefered” class or stop giving a kitten about game.
It’s not, Anet likes to focus on one or two profs at a time, this patch was warrior and necro, rangers day is coming to shine, just be patient
Game’s been out for 10 months and what little improvements we got (better pet attacking, increased pet health, pets not losing aggro on stealthed targets) was pretty much negated by this last update.
We are still basically in the same spot we have been since launch. Until they stop balancing around their failed Esport or finally kittening split pvp/wvw/pve balance changes, the “promised day” isn’t likely to ever get here.
First of all, Starcraft 2 does NOT “just have one play type”. Please note that DOTA/LoL was originated from Warcraft custom game, which was created by the community.
And I sincerely thank ANet for making GW2 the way it is, no monthly fee, no need to worry about level grind etc — I can now freeze my account until later when I choose to come back.
As many has pointed out: decrease short bow’s range to make longbow range more appealing is rather ill-intended.
I use longbow because I love it. Is it painful to use? Definitely. Do I still want to use it? Of course!
I use short bow because I love it. Would I still use it after the nerf? Sure I do. Is it painful to see it nerf? Of course!
Would I exchange to use longbow more, now that short bow’s range’s nerfed?
This is a rather low-blow, and borderline insulting… Let me close my rant with the following in-game perspective:
You created a guild, advertised it hard with “we love to do them all!”. Many member whom you never met in person in real life joined, then you put every influence into WvW buff. Some member asked to invest some PvE buff and you answered — “But this way, you will all come to play WvW!”

They just need to balance the pet around the player, and no the other way around. Up until the last patch, the players abilities were basically the only thing that got touched, and because the pet has anchored the ranger to a certain effectiveness, the changes couldn’t be more drastic because in tandem with the player, it would have been too strong.
However, now that the pet has been reduced, it is time to to start a trend of making the players abilities better.

I was hoping that the update would have given the pet damage back to the player and maybe this will happen one day idk. I’d rather they do things that make the ranger a better team player like make RaO allow the pet to apply it’s might stacks in an AoE instead of just to the player and remove virtually all charge up on skills like the stalker roar or the red moa aoe fury.
Giving more power to the player and making the pet evade when we do (not just on dodge) would go a really long way but we need to bring more to the group than just an amazing water field because we will never be an amazing dps machine and that is the only other player role in the game.
We have a lot of potential but it seems like so much of it is wasted. I can’t even use the stalker roar in most instances where my wvw zerg stacks for might simply because they have already started to move by the time the skill has actually fired off.
What if you could select which ability you wanted for your F2 on your pet?
That might be interesting.
Idk how I’d feel about this lol, I like it, but at the same time I don’t want multiple abilities being used automatically…. For example, bird F2s and their swiftness skill
That’s probably the one F2 skill I wanted on command. Back before Signet of the Hunt was buffed the limitations on ranger swiftness drove me crazy. People were microing their birds to attack nearby targets and return before engaging combat, just to trick the AI into giving them swiftness. The eagle/hawk F2 skills are kind of annoying and on such a short cooldown, I just wanted them to be auto-attacks. It would be cool if you could customise pet skills a little more, even if it’s just switching around priorities or which skills are the active ones. It doesn’t really change the skill cap, but it does increase build customisation and synergy with the pet.
All this talk about adding more micro options to the ranger, honestly I think a big thing missing is transparency with the pet. I can’t tell what boons/conditions he has without selecting him. This is something I often want to do when testing builds (especially when might stacking). It’s really annoying that the pet UI doesn’t display this information. Another piece of information that would be awesome to have would be the pet skill cooldowns. Knowing how soon before the wolf can use its leap again is something that would be very helpful. Even if you can’t command him to do it, you can make a better informed judgement on when he’s next able to do it. It would actually help new players because they would see their pets skills outside of the pet panel and become more familiar with how often they are used, which situations they are being used in and whether or not they are off of cooldown. The current alternative is to track in your head based on visual observations of pet skill animations, and if you ask me that’s a much higher “skill cap” than giving the information to the player and letting them make better informed decisions. Keep the pet UI simple and clean, but add the pet skills and boons/buffs to the basic UI.
That’s an excellent point, Shiren.

I share the sentiments. I used to make my owl attack poor defenseless little rabbits just so I can move faster for 10 seconds. This must be why Bugs Bunny nerfed us :P lol
On a more serious note, I agree with making the Eagle F2 an autocast as well. It’s on such a short cooldown I literally tried ctrl+click on it’s F2 because I constantly forgot to press it while in sPvP.

I would like to see this as well. Knowing the boons/conditions and cooldowns on pets would be really helpful. The problem is how to make it fit the current UI
Doing It With Style

Ive always used my pet as a distraction nothing more to be honest. The damage nerf did zero to my build or playstyle. The shortbow nerf i really havent noticed at all. However the pet leash range put a damper on my style a bit, i would like to see it extended a bit more. I think the devs will eventually try to do something with ranger. But I dont believe its going to be in line with what people believe ranger should be.

By virtue of you having a window to the pet skill cycle, it’s basically an indirect invitation/expectation for you to pay attention to it. Can you imagine the kind of threads you get on the forum?
X: Pets are no good, they don’t do what I want.
Y: L2P noob. The window actually tells you what the cool down is on the attack rotation. Time your attacks accordingly.
Well guess what, it’s far easier for me to actually micro manage the pet directly than to have to do it indirectly by watching and timing when the canine will fire its leap CC. If you’re advocating letting player see the cycle, you might as well ask for full micro controls, which Anet is adamant in not giving to us.
I do agree that pet buff/debuffs should be shown on top of the F1 to 4 keys though.
The reason they lowered short bow range was one of the worst responses they could have given. It’d have been nice if they gave weapon metrics on what weapons receive play and where. I’m sure it’ll match most people’s expectations though but it would have been great to receive some info.
Personally, I could have understood the short bow range nerf if they had given a different reason – for example, if they were looking to lower the range on most weapons across all professions to help balance range vs melee and they just happened to start with ranger (and thief cluster bomb.) Obviously, toning down range is a small step towards making melee stronger. I wouldn’t have liked or even totally agree with this particular reason but I could at least understand it. Outside of a few select scenarios, I personally don’t see any increased longbow attraction but quite frankly, in those scenarios, I would have used a longbow anyway. I wonder how many people who disliked the longbow initially suddenly changed into longbow evangelists.
Unfortunately, at this point, complaints about the short bow is probably a non-starter. Also, I’m not seeing the draw for spirits really. In the pvp matches that I watched where rangers opted for the spirit elite, as soon people saw a big blue spirit go up, they stopped (or tried to stop) damaging the player and focused the spirit. In short, the passive effect on the spirit turns out useless because it’s only up for a few seconds anyway. There were a few suggestions (from the very start) to increase the effective spirit range but others have thought are fine as they are. I’m just wondering where the supporters of the current spirits are coming from. Sure, the active can be a game changer but it’s not like there aren’t utilities (and an elite) on other classes that accomplish the same thing and a bit more. It also needs some changing for WvW…
I would just like to know if any of the dev’s actively play Ranger. Or even QA, is there someone on the server’s seeing all of this? I am taking it as as a ‘no’ given the past ‘fixes’ for Ranger. Mostly on-paper stuff looking too powerful or stuff that gets a reactionary nerf due to balancing other things.
Especially for PvE content. Its ok to keep buffing the warrior indirectly because of sPvP, but it is not ok to just buff pets a ton in PvE for dungeon content, or that would be too powerful.
I can’t agree more with Shiren. Well put, no doubt. Spot on
The sad thing about guild wars is that pets in Everquest 15 years ago had better AI. It’s a sad state of affairs. All they had to do was separate their failed e-sport from wvw/pve and rangers wouldn’t get nerfed the amount we do.

It’s not failed yet bro, LoL didn’t launch as an Esport, yet it’s an extremely popular one now.
That being said, they need to do what they did with mesmer clones/phantasms, split how tanky pets are in each game mode, in PvP they’re fine, rangers are actually really strong there, in PvE they’re -OK- in a lot of it, but there’s other areas in PvE where the pets useless cough cough AR first boss cough cough And then in WvW…. yeah… they just explode.

The talk of the LB being completely reworked is depressing. Anet’s definition of reworking is equivalent to destroying. Odds are they’ll remove 2 or 3 of the best skills, consolidate them into 1 single skill that is nerfed into the ground, then add “new skills” that are nothing more than graphical fluff with dinky amount of damage applied so they can still be called attacks.
Here is my issue with the reason stated for nerfing Short bow range. If they want to make longbow more attractive to players and used more FIX THE KITTEN WEAPON.
Rangers were not using it that much because it was simply a very infective weapon all the way around. Longbow was easy to dodge, Slow and did far less damage over time. A few of those things have kind of been addressed, but still the base issue is there. Every other ranged weapon in the game is simply better.
If you want people to use a long bow make it worth using. Don’t nerf a weapon to force people to use it. Anet logic seems to be cut off your nose to spite your face.

Actually, I suspect they would simple shrink the gas tank to nerf its range.
