The problem I have with seeing a melee staff is that at this point with thief and Rev both getting a melee staff, it might start to be an overused concept. For thief and rev, it’s unique in a sense because they lack 2 handed melee weapons without staff.

Ranger, on the other hand, has greatsword already. So what would a melee staff that’s different from thief and revenant act without overlapping with Ranger GS at all? That would be my question/concern from a design point of view.

A caster staff for the druid on the other hand has tons of design potential that isn’t present on either the ranger class or in the theme/function of other classes. It doesn’t even have to necessarily be a “ranged” weapon, it just has to avoid being a martial weapon (aka it could be similar to guardians staff and have shorter ranges or even no range, but still thematically use magic to attack).

I doubt that anything will be revealed until after the next BWE though ANet is cutting it close

But I want to beat up bad guys with a stick. Also, having a melee staff does increase the chance of the staff being a damage focussed weapon, something I want to see. I don’t the first elite specialization to be some sort of tank or support centered specialization, I want to play through HoT with my Druid and I want to be able to kill stuff, as fast as the Berserker or the Daredavil can at best.

Good Luck with that…I hope the spec is amazing but I am not holding my breath, it looks like Ranger and Engi are only going to get one Beta weekend for feedback. The two most bugged classes in the game and they get the least amount of attention…

Email to players announces all the new specializations except Ranger

Anyone want to join me tomorrow (Monday) hitting Anet on twitter?

Everyone who also has the same view, thank you for caring enough to post to tell Anet how badly mistreated we are – it’s not a perception – it’s a reality.

It’s time we made some noise in public – the forums are being ignored – Rangers are not being given the attention that all other professions have been given to a one.

I will be sending Anet my “love” on twitter tomorrow.

Not keeping all IT jobs here is a major reason IT is so bad HERE. 33y IT 10y IT Security

Engineer also isn’t in that email, and for obvious reasons, both were not officially announced …

Hmmm. that email has me thinking… quick someone calculate the over/under that either Ranger, Engi, or both will not be released with the HOT go live but will come after…

After my calculations, the possibility of any of those elite specs not being released along with HoT is 0%
But the chances of they not be the way the players wanted and/or have obvious bugs rises considerably.

Calculating… 0%!

Seriously, my expectations are low since I’ve been disappointed many times before (Water Spirit anyone?), but don’t overdo it.

The elite specialization might be a worthless buggy mess, but it will be including in the HoT release.

Doesn’t it kind of make sense that the Druid would be the last one detailed given it’s closest ties with the lore of the new expansion? Maybe there are spoilers involved?

Optimism +1 (I’m trying…)

Well, yes they mentioned the name and the weapon, nothing else, just like they mentioned engineer’s weapon (hammer) but nothing else.
By officially announced I mean an article like the other elite specs had.

I’m hoping they’ll just pull a World of Warcraft hunter with the Druid spec, giving us the level 100 talent from wow Lone Wolf (it makes it so you play petless, your base damage is increased by 30% and you have the ability to activate petbuffs yourself)

This could work VERY well for the gw2 ranger I believe.
Take away the pet, increase damage (as the first minor in the druid line)
And then give us 2 “aspects” as our new proffesion mechanic, where you slot in your two pets of choise and you can activate their abilities yourself)
You could slot fern hound for extra heal, jaguar for a short stealth, eagle for some bleed.

I think it could work quite well, and would in my opinion fix a lot of the problems rangers have with pets

Explain how the traits/skills that affect the pet would work.
Shared Anguish and Empathic Bond would transfer the cond for yourself?
Fortifying Bond would give you 2x the boons?
All the stat bonuses from Beastmastery would go for the player?
SotP would give might 2x for yourself on attack?
What would “Guard!” do?
Among many other things.

I’m even more interested on how “protect me!” would fare.
“Guard” would obviously stealth you and grant you prot (someone said OP?)
“search and rescue” would force you to go rez someone down
“Sick’em” would make thief ask for nerf.

companion’s might when you critically hit you gain 5s might (no ICD) and apply 6s bleed (no ICD) (Gonna love this spec…)

I love these many other things . On a more serious note, they said and repeat that the pet would stay.

No core profession should be balanced around an optional elite specialization.

Yeah there is too much pet stuff that would make a petless druid a bad thing. Unless they are going to overhaul our traits and utility and weapon skills (several affect only the pet).

I might actually be disappointed if the pet was removed because of it. It just wouldn’t work and make stuff worthless to druids. Some are even Minor traits, like Fortifying Bond and Alpha Training, so it’s not like they would have a choice.

Well from the CDI posts from the devs when aspects were still a topic of discussion, an aspect would be like an entity-less pet, where the player has essentially “become one” with the pet and would be shown as an “aura” visible on the players appearance changing based on which pet they were attuned to (which would probably be ANets way of incorporating transformations without stepping on Norn toes).

So hypothetically, if there is something like 3 or 4 aspects available to swap to at a time and an additional active button function, every trait gets incorporated into that except Shared Anguish, Empathic Bond, and other passives that effect the pets.

It wouldn’t be unreasonable from that point that just like with Reaper Shroud, existing traits would get expanded upon to get functionality that works for both core ranger and elite specs.

We’ll have to see though, I have my bar set much lower than this to keep from what history tells me will be eventual disappointment.

I’m thinking it needed to be reworked quite a bit, they’ve started to realise how broken the foundation is, then how they couldn’t do what they originally intended and then once they finally got an idea they run with, they couldn’t get that down either.

Now there will be one test and pushed live. This is going to be hilarious.

I also wonder whether or not they had a go at separating mob AI from pet AI, that would push our development back if there were major re-writings going on, which would knock us out of the original intended reveal slot and into last, I find it a stretch that the reveals came in perfect profession order on their page by coincidence.
