Fluffy's WvW roaming build
That’s how it always goes, bud. I don’t think many of us have not said at least once, “dang, I wish I had been recording that”.
One thing I’ve found in WvW throughout the years is this … several people run around with zero sustain … so if you have skill and some sustain, you can wear them all down and 1vMany.
It’s why I like these various Cleric/Apothecary/etc. builds that have solid sustain … until some Nike Warrior gets away … I hate when my prey escapes, lol :-p

How do you think this build does against a condi trapper? I get that the bird has a ton of healing, but since I’ve been playing trapper, I’ve never seen any healing that keeps up.
From personal experience … full-melee has trouble against a trapper build … trapper can reposition very easily with stealth and super speed. The traps and proper use of ranged weapons for kiting also favor the ranged trapper over the full-melee Ranger.
Additionally, the lack of condition clears makes it even more difficult.
That being said … if you can manage to use your pet to set off the traps, you can screw over the trap ranger and swing it in your favor. A bird constantly in their face can do this… though a smart trapper will throw the traps a little off their self so that you then want to recall the pet quickly to get the right angle to drag it through the trap.

Since I’m guessing the bird doesn’t dodge that much, it seems like maybe it’s not a bad thing to go ahead and just try to burn it down. With burning, poison, and maybe 10 stacks of bleeds, it seems like that could be done in 10 seconds or less.
With spike trap and entangle to immobilize, and maybe even a concussion shot to interrupt, it feels like you can deal with the bird long enough to take it out. That might use all the traps, but they are all back again in 20 seconds.
After running your build through the weekend, I really tried to stick with it through thick and thin but I’m sad to say it does not work in group fights very well.
no it doesn’t work and that’s what I basically said to him. but my opinion obviously doesn’t matter and people should try it. and fail with it.
melee power rangers just don’t work. I could write a dissertation on why that’s the case, but all i’ll say is that:
1. you cant apply your damage well with GS; it’s a skirmishing and mostly defensive weapon, maul is a nice but situational skill
2. therefore, your burst is too situational
3. you have no CC and no spammable gap closers with your melee attacks (which is why mesmers, thieves, guards and warriors DO work in melee)hope that helps.
We can agree that we disagree on this matter then. I was testing this build in a group enviroment while Fluffy runs solo: For group/raids/blobs it doesn’t work due all the extra damage killing the birdy bird, but for solo and duo stuff it works really nicely. Melee power rangers can work in groups just fine, I have ran it for a long time in the past but lately due the matchups we have gotten I chose to go with the longbow instead as it’s a safer option. It’s easier to peel and focus targets down in range, while melee is more risky but at the same time it’s a lot more fun to play.

Ya that’s a bad matchup, but that’s also a bad matchup for every profession. I’ve only run in to a hanful of condi rangers, but I’ve lost to about 50% or more. The bird does fine, but it’s just a long drawn out fight of me slowly getting whittled down, and condi rangers have more sustain than any build out of any profession. On the other hand, I could have easily outrun any of them, I choose to stay. That’s one of the reason I prefer this over the cele condi ranger I play in PvP, I just can’t catch anyone.
I fought a Yak’s Bend trapper who I recognized from videos on youtube the other day. I can’t remember his handle. Not sure if he posts here… I might wind up in one of his videos. I was trying to record it with the 30 second intervals of fraps, which totally hosed me every 30 seconds (was a pretty long fight), but I was going to lose even without that.
Fluff, one more question on these runes if you don’t mind.
Do they trigger on projectile blocks as well (like axe 5)?
Thx!

Traps are unblockable. For some reason that means they are unreflectable and I think undestroyable if this is what you are asking.

They don’t.

Thx. I was trying to ask if the Runes of the Defender triggered on projectile blocks or reflects. Sorry it wasn’t clear, but it sounds like the answer is “no” to both of those.
I’m actually not sure if reflecting counts as a block. My first thought was “no”, but I looked up “block” on the wiki and it lists axe 5. If I’m in game later tonight I’ll head out with an axe to double check. I wanted to see if I can double CC with ~.5 second use of axe 5 on a PBS and then axe 4 anyway.
Edit: Axe 5 doesn’t trigger any of the benefits.
