Ever wanted to hit for tens of thousands of damage in pvp? Give this build a shot!

This video shows my melee spvp build designed for absurd burst damage and heal denial, bring a spare pair of undergarments you will need them

ps: Yes yes I pve with a healing bunker Mesmer and pvp with an all melee Ranger, screw logic

Your build isn’t bad, and I love the traits you take. In WvW you’d need an Elementalist, and a Guardian protecting you, which might actually work, and fill the role I mostly reserve for a bursting Warrior.

I disagree that “ranger loses to thieves anyway”. But yes with this build the chance is high that you will. I would give it a try if signet of the wild had a bit lower cooldown.

Also the 30% more pet ms trait does not stack with signet of the hunt passive.

I don’t think any ranger can complain about PvP/PvE, thats where they shine the most.

The problem with “rangers do low DPS” is Dungeons/WvW, where you can’t just burst that Champion/Zerg in 2 seconds… on a 95 second cooldown, especially when your pet dies pretty much instantly.

Combined with the fact that half of your damage (the Jaguar) is single target only, you will also have a harder time clearing the trash mobs.

But for PvP it’s an interesting concept (even though a 95 seconds CD means you can only burst 5-6 times a match) but it can backfire pretty hard if you enemy is paying any attention. Kinda like the Thief-combo (Mug-CnD-BS-HS) except on double the cooldown and without any escape plan if it fails.

Personally I prefer the Tank’n’Spank approach, where I tank (dodge/block/regen) my enemy while my pet is tearing them up. They usually won’t be kiting the pet if I can catch their attention.

I call it winning.
You can’t win if you can’t play and you can’t play if you’re dead.

But somewhat on topic, my ranger kittens up thieves all day.
I run a heavy condition trap spec and with well timed evades/traps and pet shenanigans I can seriously give, at very least spike dps thieves, a run for their money even when I’m at 1/3 health.

Where’s your stun breaker? You don’t always get to start a fight with stability, and stability can be stripped off by a necro or mesmer.

And good luck with that cat lasting more than 4 seconds in the 40 man zergs that roa, around in wvw all the time lately lol. Ditto for explorable dungeons — cats go faster than a prom dress.

I don’t think anybody is going to dispute the numbers that pop up on the screen. That being said, let me ask:

-What happens when an opponent is moving, kiting, dodging, crippling, blinding, and immobilizing you, or has access to numerous stealth or escape skills?
-What happens when the pet decides the pebble or the incline in front of you is too much, and circles around and reaches the opponent 5s after you do?

The damage in this build has the same core issues a longbow damage build does; not being able to hold the enemy in place to do the damage. You MIGHT get one or two good hits on them. Those will most likely come from Swoop.

Don’t get me wrong, it isn’t like you can do ANYTHING about rangers “big damage” weapons being so avoidable, but it is a reason why you don’t typically see people building around offensive melee builds.

I don’t want to take anything away from his build because I suspect it works really well in SPvP but there’s no way it’s successful in WvW. Jump into a zerg as a Ranger with that build and you ain’t coming back out.

Considering I run Erro’s berserker greatsword signet build for the lols (I jaguar instead of raven), and come out fine, you can run this build in WvW fights fine.

It’s just not a roaming build because anyone with the brain to stall you out after you pop signets and hit you after you’re back to normal size will chew you up.

And in team fights you yourself might last, but the pet always dies 3 seconds in, as usual.

LOL so true.
spvp MAYBE like idk, 0 stunbreakers i sure as hell wouldnt use it. This wouldnt work for WvW

Basically, how to burst halfway like a thief, fine print every 96 seconds.

also double melee, weapon choices. You get kited so easy and you must play to perfection in melee range otherwise other classes will crush the juice outa you. For those who chose to play ranger i know you wernt thinking melee class so have some ranged weapons on you and be useful lol.

EDIT: your kittening ai pet isnt going to do TONS OF DMG if you can’t hold down the target.

This build can work in WvW skirmish if used with 6x melandru+lemongrasd soup. You will only ever get stunned for 1 second and all other conditions just fly off. Allows skill set up to be focused on something else.

His build also has in built cripples with sword/dagger as well as entangle. That is plenty tohold targets diwn to be bursted by the jaguar. 3 seconds was all it took to take diwn that golem.

Would like to see it in action though. Any chance to see a “live” demonstration?

Why is everyone here comparing this build for WvW? I believe I said at least 3 times in the video this is a SPVP build, not a WvW build.

Also on the movement, the 30% movement speed bonus surprisingly takes care of that assuming the target doesn’t go into stealth (which pretty much breaks all pet AI anyways). Generally if the pet is stealthed the target won’t know where it’s coming from so at least for that quick burst they won’t know which way to move

It’s not the movement speed of that pet that is the problem, its the attack speed and the fact that the pet is rooted when it attacks (it stops moving). Meaning that even if it catches up to a person and attacks them, a person who is kiting is going to avoid the attack because the pet stops moving.

I believe that is why the optimal choice (or believed most optimal choice) for a BM heavy build tends to be the raven/bird family, because I believe somebody showed that the birds have a larger attack radius and are therefore more likely to hit a moving target. The dog as well because it cripples and knocks down foes in its attacks, allowing them to land more hits.

I got to agree that ranger will never be such great bursty class as thief or mesmer, but they can of caurse burst. The difference (written above) is that thief can burst people in 5 man group, cap down and run away (or continue to fight) while most classes end up dead (and most likely without killing anyone).

This build is a really sweet viable option in sPvP, I would have to try it myself however I believe its better suited for fights where you expect to have a backup. I don’t see it surviving too well if you are caught alone against multiple enemies… I could be wrong though. Have you tried this using a ranged weapon such as short bow? I wonder because even with a build like yours, I am sure there are times where you would rather take advantage of the range, and how the build would work in this case too for the ranged portion.

Birds hit twice on their main attack I think that is what makes them do better on moving targets not a longer range on the actual skills.

Interesting, but a good player using a Thief, Warrior, or Elementalist will use their mobility to wait for your damage to go on cooldown and initiative the fight on you, largely eliminating what makes you a solid threat.

Have you tried making using of Protect Me and Signet of Stone with the trait Signet of the Beastmaster? That’s 12s of invulnerability for you. 6s of invulnerability for your pet.

There’s a world of difference between hitting like a thief and being a thief. Thieves can stealth, steal, burst, re-stealth, and escape and still hit like thieves. Rangers… can’t. They have no escapes to speak of. I’d much rather build for survival over glass canon. If you don’t have a get out of jail free card then glass canon is a free trip to the portal keep.

Ranger does have a great escape … it’s just not stealth.

Combine any of the following to create quite a large gap between you and your foe(s):

  • Shortbow #3
  • Sword #2, turn 180 degrees, Sword #2
  • Greatsword #3
  • Lightning Reflexes

I often use Shortbow and Greatsword when running my Knight’s set and spec. I’ll do:
Shortbow #3 → Lightning Reflexes → turn 180 degrees → Greatsword #3 → Greatsword #4 (just to be sure I’m not getting shot still … don’t want to get crippled).

hahah cool, I’ll have to dig through other people’s listed builds there and compare.

I might take this build and make an alternative longbow version of it, so it’s not just all-melee for players that prefer ranged (although I’d imagine someone’s probably come up with one by now)

I used to use Gs and longbow until I realized I as wrong lol. I figured it would be the optimal dps vs survival…wrong. Sb is the way to go, either that or axe (if you run hybrid like me, if you run full condition then SB is better), and even a power build does fine with an axe. Offhand depends on build though, and is largely personal preference. And yes, rangers have tons of damage nullifying effects. Evade is a nullifying effect, and what lots of people don’t realize is, it’s coded into auto attacks…..it does the work for you As far as combat breakers, well read what Sebrent said. Lightning reflexes is a huge stun breaker/vigor buff/combat breaker. You can even trait it to be better! Plus…wait for it….it can be used underwater too! In fact I always take it underwater. People forget you can still dodge underwater >.>

to be brutally honest, i think it’s worthless.
Anyone with a brain can evade the spike and then murder you, and there is nothing you can do about it.

A thief can do more damage, without long colldowns and with the ability to engage and disengage at will, making the squishiness irrelevant. If we’re talking spvp, anyone can roll any class and play instantly, so there is NO POINT in playing such a build.
