I quit playing Ranger until they are fixed
Be warned about necro alot of traits do not work right, do not give proper damage or lifeforce depending on the trait and such. Now the guardian and mesmer go to town, I love both of mine, so many nice options for trait builds for both, mesmer can be alittle to much kiting for me since undead seem to ignore illusions most of the time but overall both guard and mesmer is alot of fun. For the necro I recommended a power or condition build for leveling. Even minions are ok but they often times find more mobs then you are fighting so it makes it really annoying.
I am a lv78 ranger. Instead of the critial dmg+power+precision build I am doing a condition dmg+condition duration+precision build. Here assuming condition duration scales the same as power (quite true indeed from formulae), then condition dmg seems to scale 66% better than condition damage since 1% of critical dmg only projects to 0.6% improvement after the 60% critical chance. Of course, if you can flank your opponents 100% of the time…
My 2 cents? Try different build
uhh im decked out in full beserker gear lvl 80 and with my longbow and i kitten you not i crit players depending on the distance from 3k to 4k and thats just with normal shooting i have beaten warriors and guardians by blowing ALL my cool downs on them….but they do still have problems like the 1 handed sword root and your arrows being blocked even tho there is a clear path between you and the other player.
and yes they need to take out the dumb pet traits for our marksman and skirmish trees and give us something more useful but they are not as kittenome people are making it out to be. Yes i know guardian and warrior blow rangers out of the water but lets see what the new ranger patch changes before we start going off like this making threads that you would regret because they fixed some of the problems you are having in the next patch.
@blackenX how do you know this? because from what they posted they released NO information on what would be changed. So please stop trying to be a debby downer and and spreading false information….until the patch is out all things is hearsay and speculation….
I finally started my Ranger after the adjustment announcement. I played one all Beta and ended up a Thief, mainly because of the pet pathing and pets not attacking mobile targets at the time of BWE3.
I figured I’d start now just so I can compare and contrast the changes. I’ve lurked here, and it’s good to see that the changes should address some of the common complaints I’ve seen. Hang in there, guys.
Ranger Pets are entirely useless in WvW no matter how you slice it and not matter what build you’re using. They stay perma dead in any meaningful fight. A petless Ranger for WvW option would be amazing but I don’t see it happening.
Best thing to do with pets in WvW is use Fern Hound for the regen and either wolf (fear), spider (immob) or Alpine Wolf (chill) and keep them mostly on passive mode and only use them in small skirmishes. Any of the Ranged pets like lashtails might work for keep defense but I don’t know as I don’t have any of those yet.
People say the ranger fails in wvw because of the pet mechanic a lot. I think the ranger also fails in spvp because of the “stay in the circle” mechanic. It’s a class that is meant to kite and keep range for damage, I often find myself trying to melee a warrior or guardian or thief within the circle and just feeling sub par because I can only kite around in a small circle. Also staying near the edge of the circle inevitably leads to getting knocked out and losing the point for the team.
I don’t understand why half of the QQ posts are from rangers who are not even 80 and well geared.
WvW is not an optimal place for ANY class not level 80 with level 80 exotics, they will do more damage than you and tank more than you.
I go full berseker and my barrage does pretty much 700-1500+ per hit which is quite good. A couple of autoattacks, rapid fire + QZ + Barrage and it can pretty much burst down a medium/light armor target.
It’s not like it takes a lot to be lvl 80 and have full exotics…with about 20g you can buy full jewerly and some armor/weapon if you are so impatient to get it through dungeons (which is quite fast aswell).
Full berseker gear stats on my ranger:
2,379 power 3,459 attack
1,911 precision 51% crit chance/91% crit damage
1,016 toughness 2,080 armor
916 vitality 15,082 health
My only problem with this squishy build in WvW are thieves and sometimes mesmers. As a ranger you usually initiate first, and this is what i like about WvW as ranger. Pets have their uses…having them on aggressive mode is useless tho, you have to control your pet so it does what you want it to do in the right moment…

@OP Yeah, I’ve put my level 80 Ranger on the shelf for now for similar reasons as most above. But not holding my breath for a decent fix for a while.
I’m leveling up Warrior, Mesmer and Ele. So far my Warrior is the favorite. Rifle/GS is very powerful and very similar to Ranger in playstyle.
You may find the light armors classes a bit glass cannony compared to the medium armor Ranger. Be warned.
necro has fewer options than ranger.
(at least in PvP)
I’m just going to wait for the Ranger patch to fix some of our bugs and or buff other less appealing skills.
Because if they deliver, I can’t wait to see all these people that are saying “omg ranger sux nao im’a make a war because OP” come back.

Rangers can be hard to kill if you gear and build right for it, but then you can’t do jack in damage. You’re just like one of those annoying Prot Paladins from mid-Wrath (WoW) days. Can’t kill them but they can’t kill you.
