I’ve been moving back and forth between professions for months now whilst my GF has been slowly leveling her Ranger. In short what goes best with Ranger.

My Favourites are -

Thief
Elementalist
Ranger
Warrior

I’m sick of not having a main. I PvP a little but not much since she doesn’t like Spvp because we can’t realiably be on each others team.
Wv3 she likes the look of but I want to have my main leveled up for that.

Warrior might be good, lot of blast finishers and if she uses torch or flame trap you could get a lot of might out. And Rangers kind of get double benefits from your shouts/banners.

Also while not in your list Guardian is great at keeping other melee alive which could help keep her pet alive.

I am not specialist in this, but i can give you some input. And with the anet statement in mind, there should be no need for not playing your prefered proffesion.
1. If you go warrior you got a tough dmg dealing guy that pulls aggro from the ranger so she can be more “sniperish”.
2. Elementalist can be tricky with ranger since your both ranged and ele is even more glass-cannon so you have to hide behind your gf
3. Thief can be cool if you like more fancy playing, but maybe it is confusing for your gf if your here, then there, then need to run away, then..
4. Two rangers can look nice together and is really nice partnership-looking.. you both got pets.. share same stories.. weapons.. skills.. stuff like that. But cant really get so much synergy.
5. Guardian can be nice if you want some tough warrior with healing and some magic.

If i would choose i would choose warrior if you want to be a bad kitten in her eyes and also get some good teamplay. Go ranger if you want to be more involved in your gf`s buisness and she into you (but if she dont like you in her case 24/7, or you dont like it, be honest, then not recommended) If she likes excitement, and can handle her own more, and you love your assa, then gogo

It really depends on how she plays her ranger and how you want to play those professions which is a better fit. Really you can make any combo work if you want it to.

If she likes to hang back and pew-pew with bows then I would go with warrior, guardian, a bunker style d/d elementalist, or a greatsword (or sword) ranger. It’s really very helpful to have a player that is melee based but 2 ranged works just fine. Pets don’t hold aggro so well later on and especially if she likes the shortbow having someone else up in the enemies face so she can flank is a big bonus.

If on the other hand she likes to smash faces in melee range then you might be better off with something like a staff elementalist or a thief.

When it comes to combo fields/finishers the ranger is really good and laying down fields if trap specced, no traps means almost no fields (Healing Spring, Flame Trap, Frost Trap). Finishers are almost exclusively projectile (which are pretty bad tbh) with the exception of a few leap finishers and a whirl.

I would just pick which one you have the most fun with and then figure out what works for you two.

For WvW.

In my Exp, Warrior and Ranger Combos go well, snares and poisons work well together – If anything, when these two classes rampage together many, many, many things die, so long as both of you know your limits. (and play your classes well).

Thief meh, Its more of a solo class, they can be great help. Never had much teamage with one.

Guardians can benifit from your snares- And you can be supported by there virtues.
Not a bad combo.

Ele’s I have not had much teamage with …so cant say much.

All in all pick w/e you guys feels comfortable with >;)

I’ve had great luck partnering my BM tank build ranger with a condi thief. I kitten off and hold aggro while he melts things down with AOE bleeds and caltrops. Most trash melts instantly and champs are also a breeze.

Haven’t had a chance to run in WvW but when we do we will running small raids on camps and what not. Ranger shines best here as pets are more viable then in zerg slug fests and sieges.

My GF almost exclusively uses Longbow except for when she drops her traps in to the mobs. I need something that can duo well with Ranger in PvE, Wv3 and solo fine in Spvp.

Warrior sounds interesting even though I hardly ever play the archetype in video games.

I say go ranger. Leveling PvE stuff will be easy with 2 pets and you can set up each other’s condi damage. With flame trap you can keep the field up longer if you rotate between them. In PvP (especially WvW) you will spend a lot of time on the walls and will enjoy the added range the ranger has over the warrior. You can also support each other if one goes SB and the other LB with the various skills.

For dungeons, while it will be difficult to find a premade with room for 2 rangers (hard enough for 1!), you both assisting each other with the stacking vuln that you can get or the stacking bleeds etc is handy. Pets also could tank somewhat for you if you spec properly.

Only real problem will be dungeons and fractals IMO, but this is a problem for the ranger class as a whole and hopefully SOMETHING will be done to improve the issues by the time you’re 80.

ranger has a lot of CC’s and probably the most reliable access to quickness, this basically means insta-revives and insta downs. i’ve teamed extremely well with thieves where i become the target and the thieves deal the burst. i then just pop a wolf-howl, pop a quickness if they are down and we’re good to go again.

So it’s either Ranger or Warrior?

In wvw I really enjoy going with a warrior or a guardian. I’m a tankier ranger that loves swooping into a mess of people popping entangle to create a hot zone, it’s nice to be with people that initiate pushes well, or will rear guard and revive when retreating.

In spvp I like to party with elementalists for some reason, I guess I harass allot while they just blow the stink out of people. Again, swoop.. you can not flee.

Thieves kind of do their own thing, and I wouldn’t rely on most of them for shelter if I fall. Asura thieves tend to be nicer than others in that respect for some reason.

Well I’ve decided I definitely want to be a Scholar profession, it’s what I’ve always been in near enough every game that has given the option.

It is either Elementalist or Mesmer, I like them both.
It’s a toss up between Ele[AOE] or Mes[Shatters], I worry about Mesmers and PvE.

nothing to fear, with stealth abilities pve is pretty cake for mesmers, though if youre shooting the same target she may have it down before you can get too many illusions up.
another class to consider is Necro. if she is going condition ranger, she has access to fast bleeds and burning. pair that with necro’s Epidemic which is on a short cooldown, and GG. downsides of necro are obviously that staff sucks and you have to kill kitten everytime you die for life force, but the condition power between the two of you would be epic.

Ranger + Fiery Greatsword + Quickening Zephyr is my favorite combo.

That is the one thing I worry about is that Mesmer seems very single target oriented, my AOE with shatters might get messed up if the monster they are aimed on get killed. Mesmer seems more Caster like than Ele (since with Ele it seems to all be about D/D). I have a level 37 Necro but as I got higher I noticed that conditions just aren’t my thing and so I went with Wells but got fed up of relying on utilities to do most of the damage.

i like the way you think, also this shows what the warrior is all about xD

Hammer / Axe+Warhorn warrior + shortbow / Axe+warhorn since release, works really well… bolas, fear me, bull’s charge, whatever elite and for the ranger; muddy terrain, protect me, (stun breaker of your choice), entangle.
(power toughness vit gear, soldiers jewelery & runes)

100-blades warrior meet the bunker/lockdown team.

I keep backtracking not knowing what to do. My heart is with Scholars but then none of them really fit the caster description I love, plus being squishy isn’t to enjoyable for me.
So annoying, I really want to WV3.
