Give you a rough idea of how rough rangers have it when you get a “GLF, rangers need not apply” request. You can call us every name in the book. You can say we suck. You can say our DPS is bad. You can call us four letter colorful metaphors.

But the one offense that burns us, the one where we dig in, and the only time you can honestly kitten us off, is when you tell us to “Reroll”. Then…we get mad.

When I’m cute, I can be cute. But when I’m mean, I can be very very mean.

KeyOrion 1 you just resumed all i tought of their so called dps rules. As for tanks in guild wars 1 clearly youve not seen my jingle bear solo tank high end boss like if they where jokes (you do know pets can have up to +6 regen a bonus of +32 damage reduction heavy attack speed as well as endess ressurection? Who needs some silly warrior/derv in these cases to take on a heavy damage boss.) Pets altrought buggy should always be considered a part of the ranger damage equation unlike what some fools around here belive. when you say you do 2k auto attack you dont say you do 2k auto you say you do 3k auto (if the pet is untraited) or 4k auto (if pet is traited) without might!
My base total damage per second while auto attacking is easily at 5k and way above when i got some might (wich i do quite often) go tell that to those dumb wars who fancy doing a 5k crit with their auto attack when stacked with might are forced to melee range and think that because they swing theyre sword over 3 or around seconds doing 35k
they are doing insane dps (laugh) for all the time they waste out of boss range when low health to recover they arent doing any more dps then i would without any might stack to begin with. Top total damage ive done within 3 second on my ranger reached 20k+ (pet 2x 3k auto attack +1x 6k bite critical + rapid fire damage) and i didnt had a banner of discipline out to pull my personnal damage up. Melee weapon are over rated because some korean did the mat that in a PERFECTLY controlled situation you could do crits over the charts, well of course but how many time you think those opportunity for full damage happens… you guessed it, rarely! You need a perfect composition with very specific party build and a full team coordination wich by the way you will somewhat never have in a pug (Not to mention that boss have varying armor level). Even then most of the smart warrior WONT spec for pure dps because they also have to think about their health and armor level. The problem is not the ranger behing under rated its the glass noob behing over rated even if practicaly 95% of the warrior population will not use a glass cannon build and will keep their dps to themselve (my warrior in full ascended deals less then 18k on hundred blade without might and im not ashamed of it because I both do exelent damage and im not as likely to die as those dorks who spec full damage, so why when people look at ranger they all think we do 2k less dps per second?)

Now guardian might be a defrent thing when they heal a lot but meleeing force even them to sometime back out of battle while i can keep up my 4k+ all the time.

Been playing ranger since first year Guild Wars 1. People who choose ranger, chose it for the play style. They wanted to hit the enemy at longer ranges. They felt that there was more safety, if you could hit the enemy at range, the better chance of survival you had. Even in Guild Wars 1, I had a build that I named “Last Man Standing”. Even that term was coined earlier in this thread. We did damage at range, and that is our style of play we preferred. But unfortunately Ranger was always considered a second class profession. Support. Sidekick. This was never more common, than in Hall of Heroes, Urgoz Warren, and The Deep. Ranger mains were always told to “reroll”. Do you have any other profession? We need 2 tanks, 1 nuker, 2 Healers, 1 Prot…so on and so on…usually the last person was just an added benefit. Rangers were considered nothing more than an afterthought after the CORE group was chosen and put together. And the CORE group, was never a ranger.

Support. We were there to support the base core group. Nothing more, nothing less. At times, yah it hurt. It sucked. After nearly six years, was lucky enough to find a group for Underworld. Was I bad player? How would they know if I never worked with them? No, I was a fully dedicated player. The groups, wanted 55 Necro’s, 600 tanks, nukers, bonders, healers, Minion masters….but never barely a single ranger. Second class citizens. 55/600 builds never worked to well with rangers, because the skills were not quite compatible for the builds. Our ability to cover large AoE areas were limited, unless we pulled the skills from a secondary skill set. Hall of Heroes was the worst. You had to be a certain rank, to join the group, and even then you had to have certain professions. Rangers were excluded just for being a ranger.

Now, come Guild Wars 2…Rangers are still classified as nothing more than support, sidekick…once again, we’re being classified as a second class profession. Mostly from those players who played the original Guild Wars. And this rankles a lot of long term original main rangers. Rangers don’t like to think of themselves as second class to ANYONE. We’re a profession all to ourselves. We have unique skills, with the proper combinations, runes, sigils, can do extraordinary things.

Barrage with Sigil of Hobbling, and you can slow the enemy down.

Rune of the Centaur, gives Sharpening Stone additional bleed time, add that with Sigil of Agony….

Hunter’s Shot quickly followed by Quickening Zephyr, then Rapid Fire could easily give up to, if all shots hit, and has been reported, up to 18k in damage can be achieved. But you have to be properly Traited, runed, and be seriously focused on the target.

When people look at DPS, or damage from the Longbow, that’s all people will focus on itself. The weapon. What traits you do, what rune’s you have on your armor, what sigil is on your weapon, and which Support Skills you have in your bar, will wildly change the damage you can do. But most people will not sit down and look at what will support the Longbow/Short Bow skills for a ranger.

You’re so spot on the ranger problem. The mentality on which players view the ranger has been, for over a year, completely underrated thanks to all the factors revolving group play. I don’t need to repeat anything that you said since you stated it so clearly, but I will add this:

I consider myself a very capable ranger as I, through significant combat and group experience, trial and error, have truly hit the epitome of an ideal ranger. The last man standing is a true testament to what a ranger is really capable of. With the ranger mechanics in which we display 100% counter-mechanics to fight battles, we can provide solid support for a group where no other class can. If anyone reading this thread has not yet met a ranger who is the last man standing and can stand his ground against a boss and possibly even kill him, then you have not yet seen the true potential of a strong ranger.

The only good ranger is one with a sword says all dungeon groups; which, I think, is a sign of something.

Bows need love and utilities need to support this play.

There is no way to balance melee and range combat at the moment. So Bows will be.

2. nessescary

nothing else.

Why is the ranger normally the last one standing in a dungeon? Cause they’re pew-pewing kitten damage from the rear while their brown bear limps around.

You want to be effective in a dungeon group with your Ranger? Run spotter, sword+horn/SB or GS, jungle stalker/red moa (for might stacks and fury), healing spring, frost spirit, the lightning one, and RoA. Only use SB when you can’t melee. Get really good at dodging. Get in close to group use F2 on stalker, moa, frost spirit, and the horn #5.

This PVE game is all about doing as much damage as possible as fast as possible and mitgating damage through evades/dodges. Next patch is going to hurt everybody (I think Guards and Mes aren’t getting hit by it but I don’t remember) on the endurance regen… so yeah, doing as much damage as possible is goign to be even more important.

To that point, if I see someone looking for no rangers, that means they aren’t looking for necros or engineers either because they want to get the dungeon as fast as possible and the Ranger, Necro, and Engineer just aren’t built for that…. Know what you need? Burst (warrior & mes) and extreme party support (guard, mes, war). Most of the parties I run would be served a lot better for running 3 wars, 1 guard, 1 mes or 2 wars, 2 guards, 1 mes. Of course, all should be (in the least) mostly or all zerker. I don’t run fractals, just the regular dungeons.

RNG is a bell curve. Better hope you’re on the right side.

Don’t be surprised if you aren’t running this setup that you get kicked from the party… If you show up in the party with a brown bear don’t be bvtthurt because you immediately get kicked. If you are going to get your snowflake feelings hurt because you’re running a ranger, yes, suck it up and reroll. I did. Learn to play the other classes. I now pick what class I’m going to play depending on what dungeon we are going to run and what the party composition is. I’m going to run whatever I think will help us get through the dungeon as fast as possible.

Oh, and one more thing, some of the dungeons, namely AC, lend themselves to be done better/faster using elementalist weapons. So, when I run AC, we normally replace one of the warriors with an elementalist… speaking of which, I need to roll one.

RNG is a bell curve. Better hope you’re on the right side.

This is still a huge issue because of the difficulty of fractals from last patch. With the new mistlock instabilities, scrutiny against leather and namely rangers has increased. Many ranger player I know have quit or stopped doing fractals.
