Q:

Hello, I am new to GW2 and the Ranger class. I do however have a lot of questions regarding this game and class but I’m trying to post just a few to fully understand. I recently just starting playing due to I got tired of Wow and all the crap that goes along with it. I did play a Hunter and mainly did PVP and was able to achieve a 2.2k rating.

I’m confuse how to move from area to area. I am currently level 13 but I only got there pretty much just from guessing where to go and by joining nearby events. Like wow you always get a quest that tells you what area to move to next. I don’t understand what I need to complete to move to the next area.

If someone could explain a few details of what I need to do in these areas to level up and be sure I’m doing it right, I would greatly appreciate it?

If I am focusing on PVP what type of gear should I be wearing and what stats are most important for Rangers? If there is a specific site that explains this class in detail please provide that and I would gladly be sure to read up on it.

Also, how is the end game content of GW2 for PVP. Do you think it’s the same or comparable to Wow PVP? I have only really played Wow and it seems I’m always comparing everything new to wow. I’m sure I should not be doing that because if everything was the same it wouldn’t be fun. Lol.

I think I’m just getting frustrated because I really have no idea what I’m suppose to be doing, or the understanding of the in game content.

Please provide any information you think that will help.

Thank You

As far as I know ( 2x 80’s in GW2 ) and ( 3 years of wow, 8 chars to 85 ( stoped before mop release ) I can tell You 2 things.

PvP In this game when it comes to overall content ( Spvp/Tpvp/WvW ) is very weak as to compare to wow ( tho this game is still fresh tbh. ) but don’t expect hours of grind for gear ( Whn you join Mists – spvp/tpvp – you get ready gear and you just “grind” new skins – I didn’t like this Idea it’s hard to get used to tbh ). When It comes to WvW vs WoW Open world battles well it’s pretty much the same, with 2 exceptions ( WoW have no “Seieges” and walls to bring down. ).

When it comes to another aspect Battlegrounds is something that WoW had and made it work perfectly while GW2 lacks of something like BG’s – You got plain stright simple Combat mode in Spvp/tpvp which is capture point and hold it. after 2-3 hours it gets extremely booring.

Another aspect to comapre are Conditions vs WoW ( curse/freezes/dots etc ). WoW had that system polished, easy to put Dots on Your target but at the same time a lot of tools to remove those dots. In GW2 condition system is broken ( at least for me ) COnditions are far to easy to stack Doing tons of dmg and there are not to many ways to remove those ( here guardian class is king ).

A Wow hunter vs gw2 ranger is different story. WoW hunter had good pet AI with great utilities. here Ranger ( apart from Bunker – tank builds ) are as far as I read at bottom of food chain ( I’ve played around 100 spvp/tpvp games ( kind of arenas ) with ranger and really was totaly different story then wow – not sure your gonna like it ).

Tbh at this point ( 3 months into game for me ) I think that WoW offers far more top END content for max lvl players and it’s far more fun and balanced ( thanks to healers ). in this game Youll find yourself many times in spot lying down dead on ground trying to figure out what killed You ( Far to low HP pool comapred to DMG and burst going on ). And You don’t need to have brain to manage to do that with proper class ( like thief or warrior ).

Also after lots of time spend on GW2 at some point ( for me at least ) the game system which is having only – DPS tbh, because You can’t call that different way is totaly booring. You can ofcourse change your spec to be more tanky, or to heal yourself for more but don’t expect having totaly verstile gameplay of being able to only heal and be good at it gaining respect or be awesome/great tank. This game ( gw2) is not even about skill, 1v1 duels can end in 1-2 seconds with some classes outpreforming others. On top now are Thiefs/Eles/Warriors/mesmers when ti comes to dmg, they got also best in game utilities and as far as i noticed rest classes ( guardian/ranger/necro/engineer ) were added just to fill blanks and not leave game with only 4 classes.

If I were You, I’d seriously stay and stick to WoW at this point, but as far as You bought game already You can try to have at least “some” fun by doing personal story ( which is kinda cool ).

As for Guild wars 2 map, Zoom it out and Youll notice numbers over specific grounds ( like 15-25 ), You should aim for those zones.

personally I love to stay 1-20 in starting norn zone ( 1-15) because of best in game events going on there and overall good mobs setup for grind.

To travel to another location, move back to main town ( big ones ) and look for Pink circles on map – asura portals, they will take you to Lions arch to a place ( where you got 5 diff portals ) to other starting zones.

Each time You do a zone ( xx hearts completed ) youll reach end of map looking for exits from specific zone to another, simply if you find wrong lvl zone, move back and find another exit.

You don’t have specific route to follow ( apart form quests form personal story – which are marked by green stars on Your map “m” ).

So don’t worry, You can also level up your character to 80 staing in 1 zone it will take more time but meh

Than you so much for response. I will be sure to pay attention to the zones and the levels that run in sequence with them. That should help with where I should be at.

As for Ranger PVP that seems very disappointing to me as I love hunter classes or ranger classes. I am not really a melee kinda player, but being this is a new game to me and I know nothing. I guess it’s time for me to learn a new class. Lol. It’s sad to hear that the end game content may not be what I’m expecting but I guess I’ll give it a try since I already bought the game.

I do wanna thank you for your explanation as I found it very informative.

Than You,

Well for sure You won’t find Any raids ( 10/25 mans ) or anything near that.

Gw2 “raids” are more kind of world Bosses / events which are usualy unplanned etc, You just attend, try to not stand in crap, and if u die hope someone will rez you.

I kinda miss sometimes normal raid composition ( 10/25 ) with proper team play so You feel like You earned that kill instead of just hitting it and avoiding circple on ground. You could even go afk on thsoe events and someone still gonna rez you and you get that kill – thats not really rewarding.

Some people say that better “ranger” then actuall ranger in this game is warrior. He indeed have far better skills on Longbow weapon and addtional he has abilit to use rifles with Aimed shot ( huge dmg single target hit ).

So if You like having pet ( which is kinda broken due to AI problems in GW2 ) go ranger. But If you want a ranged class ( 1200 + range, hard hitting etc ) go either mesmer or warrior

Actually, ranger PvP is awesome right now. Look at the sPvP forums, and look for the post that is ranking classes in different tiers. Rangers are almost always on top.

From personal experience, ranger has a high skill floor, but a very high skill ceiling. Most of this comes from the ranger’s lack of real survival skills. They need to rely on dodges and crowd control much more than other classes.
