As of the last few days, I’ve been running a 20/20/0/0/30 build, and I love it so far. I swap traits, skills, weapons (I use them all!), armor and jewelry around a lot depending on what I’m doing, but generally, this is my “normal” setup, for regular pve/dungeons:

http://goo.gl/g78BM (for spvp, I trait more into WS)

I have 3 armor sets (magic find set, Lyssa’s armor and one berserkers set) that I swap around depending on situation as well, same goes for jewelry, which means I can swap easily between high power/precision sets to a more tankier setup with decently high armor and healing power.

DPS setup:
3200 power / 56% critchance / 2178 armor / 324 healing power

which can easily be replaced by

Survival setup:
2889 power / 32% critchance / 2608 armor / 923 healing power

Or anything in between. For a good allround armor set, I can really recommend Lyssa’s armor.

*

The general ideas of the build are:

- Maximum dps and survivability for my pets, due to regen, high stats, +30% crit damage and health gain on crits
- Decent to high survivability for me due to signet of the wild + natural healing
- Moderate to high dps from power/crit traitlines

In all my previous builds, I have always put at least 5 points into WS beacuse of the 5 point minor, and thought I would miss that particular trait too much to run without it, but tbh, I don’t miss that trait at all.
I also used to run builds that would grant protection, but I can’t say I miss that either.

For those leveling rangers and wondering about builds and equipment, I suggest that you spend a lot of time in sPvP before you spend a lot of money on lvl 80 gear. It is invaluable to see what really works and suits your playstyle.
Mine is similar to Mog’s signet build except I have 20 in WS in lieu of NM. It gives me a great 6s invulnerable, stability and resistance to movement impairing abilities which is important in WvW. I use skills that provide Fury and try to keep it up most of the time. Consequently, I picked traits and other things that trigger off crit because I crit a lot.
The main thing though is to find something that works for you. Good luck with your rangers!

My ranger is 65 now, I’m working toward this:

20 / 30 / 10 / 10 / 0

http://www.guildhead.com/skill-calc#mcom0zzz0MMmvmMhGvMGxaa0oRMRqoV

for general PVE, since Entangle scales with condition damage now it’s my elite. obviously I’m running a condition damage set to take advantage of traps and shortbow flanking. Jewelry is mainly toughness so she can actually take a hit. Condition damage shortbow, toughness axes.

range fights are obvious, drop traps in front of the target and start shooting, in melee drop traps at your feet, switch to axes, whirling defenses.

Beastmaster’s bond since the pets going to die anyway on hard fights soooo may as well get something for it, and Piercing Arrows for “crowd pleasing”

Sharpened edges to give bleed chance just in case I can’t flank the target, the bleed doesn’t stack nearly as nicely but it does stack a little. Trapper’s expertise and Trap potency for obvious reason.

popped enough points into wilderness survival to lower the recharge on Zephyr.

and enough points in nature magic to get Strength of Spirit.

on world dragon fights I switch out the traps for signets or spirits and place them at the back row.

Axe based build(s)

20 Marksmanship (I, VII)
30 Skirmishing (II, IX, pick what you like for the remaining)
20 Wilderness Survival (III, VII)

The reasoning here is 20 in WS to get the offhand cooldown reduction, 30 in skirmishing to max crit chance, and the remaining 20 in Marksmanship for power.
Healing Spring, Signet of Renewal, Signet of Hunt, Signet of Wild, Rampage as One

Two Variants
1. axe/axe + axe/torch “Combo Field Build” – run around with spider for poison combo field, lay down bonfire for fire combo field, drop healing spring for water combo field. Axe 1, 2, 4 are projectile finish, and 5 is a whirl finish. Gear power/precision/condition damage. Typical AoE pull is run in gathering with axe1, drop bonfire on cluster, swap to axe offhand, and use Whirling Defense- stuff melts fast. If your spider does the AOE poison move, add that too. Drake works well for this too. This build is more about AoE.

2. axe/axe + axe/warhorn “crit damage build”- gear power/precision/crit damage, use whatever pet you like (I prefer arctic wolf). Use Warhorn 5 to apply fury, swap and WD from axe offhand. This build is more about dropping stuff fast with big crits, and maintaining the 20% crit from fury.

Axe is nice because Axe 1 tracks strafing targets, and works well on smaller clusters. Many dislike Axe 4, but if you line it up so it pierces and returns through the cluster, damage is fine. The main target, off target, main target bounce pattern can rapidly kill 2 guys.

Utilities are picked for minimal downtime and max speed, stripping conditions and regenerating you between fights. Rampage as one helps with veterans.

Overall I have had the most fun with the combo field variant, as you always seem to have a 5 skill up.

Lazy Ranger WvW Build

All knights armor and jewelry except for karka shell. Berserker Back.
Valkrie longbow. w/e greatsword.
6x exquisite ruby jewels
w/e runes in armor. I use 3x lyssa and 3 beryl orbs.

30/30/5/0/5

Traits: Steady Focus, Eagle Eye, Signet of the Beastmaster, Trapper’s Defense, Quick Draw, Pet’s Prowess

Slot Skills: Healing Spring, Signet of Renewal/QZ/Signet of the Wild, Signet of Stone, Signet of the Hunt

Elite Skill: I use Take Root. If you aren’t a sylvari use whatever.

Consumables: oil + pie/truffle steak

Pets: Red Moa + Jungle Stalker for buffs in siege. Owl + Jaguar for sniping.

Swap pets for 2 seconds of quickness when using barrage or bursting with rapid fire(Steady Focus + Signet of the Wild makes barrage hit big). Use greatsword for swoop to get around faster and to escape combat for out of combat regen. Use signet of stone for 6 second invulnerability. Use signet of renewal to break immobilize when needed. Use Take Root for 3 second invulnerability.
__________

Lazy Ranger WvW Build 2

This was inspired by how my longbow/hammer warrior performed compared to lazy ranger.

Same gear as lazy ranger.

20/20/20/0/10

Traits: Steady Focus, Piercing Arrows or Eagle Eye, Primal Reflexes, Quick Draw, Wilderness Knowledge, Hide in Plain Sight, Shout Master

Slot Skills: Healing Spring, Protect Me, Quickening Zephyr, Signet of the Hunt

Elite Skill: Take Root or Rampage As One

Consumables: oil + pie

Pets: Jaguar + Brown Bear

The idea is simply to snipe with stealth jaguar + longbow + QZ. Use the brown bear + dodge roll + shout to shield yourself from damage. Hide in Plain Sight substitutes for stun breaker.
__________

Support Ranger WvW Build

Same gear as lazy ranger.

20/20/0/30/0

Traits: Steady Focus, Eagle Eye, Agility Training, Quick Draw, Vigorous Spirits, Strength of Spirit or Nature`s Protection, Spirits Unbound

Slot Skills: Healing Spring, Stone Spirit, Storm Spirit, Signet of the Hunt

Elite Skill: anything

Consumables: oil + pie

Pets: anything

The idea with this build is to keep your spirits alive and in range of your group. Signet of the Hunt probably seems redundant with Storm Spirit proc but you want mobility to keep your spirits alive. You want to give 4 seconds of protection every 10+ seconds to people with the spirit buff and still do damage at max range with longbow and dance your pet around with side mouse buttons. If you are forced to be in range of siege that will destroy your spirits then run the lazy ranger 2 build slot skills with Sick `Em instead of QZ. Use Strength of Spirit, Nature`s Protection, and Evasive Purity for Nature Magic traits.

so sayeth the great innuendo

FRACTAL Issues,

I am very disappointed with the Mechanics of the Ranger in the Volcano Fractal. To be specific. My Main Toon has been a Ranger since I started playing GW in Oct 2006.

1. The Ranger has to stop to use the Longbow Barrage and Rapid Fire. This allows the boss to take you down quickly.

2. At higher Levels the constant Burn and Medium Armor make you very squishy.

3. Spirits are useless as they get on hit by everything.

4. Rangers need to have the ability to PUT OUR PETs AWAY so they STAY AWAY. This takes away the use of the Ash Legion Spy kit as our loving pets will come stand next to us and they are not covered by it and if the were they move constantly.

5. ANET, Please look into making the Ranger a more viable asset in the ever increasing difficulty of Fractals. The higher levels should not exclude the squishy classes and be limited to Only Warrior and Guardian Parties.

Thanks

This is my ranger build, more of a glass cannon, mostly focused on kitting and dps. I run a full Berserker’s set + Rune of Infiltration. For PvE as pets Devourers (good hp/armor) and the Fernhound (regen). For healing I use the Healing Spring (decent amount of healing + regen + condition removal). The only thing I change in dungeons is the Devourers, replacing them with the Brown Bear. As for the elite, Entangle.

2nd support line ranger in WWW or PvE.

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fMEQJATVjAVZ2RWCWoWCi1j9Eo93KwJmiDxoXh0XxdPA

Must stand in 2nd-line of battle.
Shooting support Suppression mob in choke point.
Pet support regen/fury and Quick2sec when swap.
If have party to cover your position use Healing spring for better support.
If you can stay still in best position you can heavy support from range to front line better.
Pet passive mode for auto-regen next to you can focus send them for re-gen team and call back.

Bad thing less escape skill can’t fight in close range not good when close/melee fight.

PvE type.

WvW build.

0/0/30/10/30 Sword/torch and SB
Movement signet
Health regen signet
LightningReflexes
Entangle

Armor/jewelry mostly apothecary. Aiming for maxing healing power/vitality/toughness/cnd dmg

Obviously this build is about staying alive. In WvW you get the most rewards by being alive the longest. With this build it is extremely easy to break down your opponents and escape if you get outnumbered.

I use shared anguish and the condition removal bond as well as the trait that gives you camo when you get stunned. This gives me two stun ignores, a stun breaker, 6 evades, and constant health regen.

Its great for zerg vs zerg. You have enough health to survive running into the fray and stomping, and you ignore the knockdbacks downed people give you. You also are a tank of a medic. With my auto regen going and heal skills I can rez friendlies in the middle of enemy groups.

This build absolutely ruins solo/small group play where I usually don’t go down to less than 5 or 6 people.

Use your evades intelligently and stack your condition you will be a force.

“Boon Swap”

This is a turret, supportive beastmaster build. It is strong in world PvE, capable of soloing veteran karkas, veteran risen giants, and most world champions, despite my modest playing skills.

By “turret”, I mean that I tend to pick a spot and fight from there. I don’t like moving unless I have a need to. I know this is counter to GW2’s design, but it’s what works for me. In part, this is because I move exclusively with the mouse, so kiting and strafing are nearly out of the question.

Most of the build is oriented around healing & buffing my pet, myself (and through fortifying bond, my pet), & nearby allies (including my pet). Most fights for me are straight-up tank & spank: my pet holds the mobs’ attention, eats their attacks, and does the bulk of the damage while I buff, heal, and add my own damage. Obviously, I don’t get to stand still as much while fighting veteran karka.

Key features of the build:

+ Significant healing, especially of the pet.
+ Group support, both directly and through spirits.
+ The trait fortifying bond, to push more boons onto the pet.
+ The use of sigils of battle, to as an extra source of might.
+ The use of specific runes for boon duration & more might.

Without the stacking sigil, this build can heal the pet for 33,200 spread over the 30 second cycle. Even the strictly passive healing is high enough (595 HPS) to AFK-solo some champions.

Pets: Drake/Devourer
Weapons: Axe/Warhorn + Axe/Torch
Skills: Healing Spring, Sun Spirit, Stone Spirit, Signet of the Wild, Rampage as One
Traits: 0/0/20 (IV, VII)/20 (IV, VIII)/30 (II, VII, XII)
Gear: Cleric
Runes: 4 Altruism + 2 Water
Sigils on mainhand are Life, until 25 stacks, then Restoration or Slaying.
Sigils on both offhands are Battle

Heres my WvW/general Pve ranger

It is a trap ranger, that was modified a little with some of the traits to fit me more.

Pets: Depending on the situation, i tend to cycle through all my pets depending on what is going on. But the two main ones on my bar at all times are Juvenile Wolf, and Juvenile Krytan DrakeHound.

*optional pets and situations used:

-any of the bears: for when i have “guard” on my bar for in WvW, for them to be tanky, and able to withstand a bit more damage when assaulting the siege. (due to update of “guard” you have to actually get on the same level/terrain level as the siege usually and than use “guard”, but otherwise it still works, besides climbing/descending walls)

-felines: if i feel like trolling, and i tend to just stick to the dog line of pets for this. But felines can be pretty effective if used at the proper time.

-Birds: dont really use them, but their quick damage and high crit im sure could come in handy

-Moas: I like the protection and fury of the moas, and the daze can come in handy if you can keep them locked.

Alternate skills:
*since i am always swapping out my utilities on the fly, it can vastly change a playstyle.

- “guard”, “sick em” and Signet of Stone: for when im sending my pets on a suicide mission in WvW where it is suicidal to be on the ramparts to try and reach enemy siege with our own siege. (if we didnt build catas/trebs to hit them from behind our walls)

-Signet of the hunt: only used when i need to traverse large areas of land in wvw fast with my #5 skill on the warhorn.

-For sylvari rangers: Seed turrent: found a new love for this skill when we had “guard” changed. I can toss it up there, and it can help lure away some defenders as they think im going to hit that spot, while i (or any allies near me) nuke their precious siege.

-Elites alternate: (due to how much it changes)
-Rampage as one: great for chasing things down, or when i need to get into a tower/keep that is under high pressure and i need the stabilize to blow past all the CC’s (until immoblize hits you, that one condition sucks when used against you :p )

-For sylvari rangers : Take root is a godsend if you are having massive trouble with people nuking your siege in wvw. Now i see people do this all the time, they will mass up on a particular siege item, to help make sure the 5 person aoe cap doesnt hit the siege (or they try to minimize the risk of it being hit by having mulitple people pile up on it). You can do the same thing with this elite, spawns 5 pods, and you can protect your siege Or other people for that matter.

-Spirit of Nature: now im not a spirit ranger, and i find this elite kind of iffy most of the time. But if i do notice that we are being heavily attacked or we are forced into the lords/champs room i will pop this to give us a little edge (but make sure to keep it far enough away from actually combat) Every little bit of health helps, that and destroying it to rally people makes for a funny thing since that can sometimes help turn the tide in a fight.

-Entangle: love it, most know how to get out of it, but when you are in a mob, or know you can spike fast against the person, this can give you the edge that you need.

*Alternate Weapon:
-Longbow: now i know most dont like the longbow, but i have found a little fun with it. Good at helping aoe things, good for hitting far away siege (if it is still in range) And for lawls when you see that warrior use Bulls Charge at you. Just hit that point blank shot on him and watch the confusion unfold as they go: what the heck just happened.
(i tend to swap this into my weapon rotation with my shortbow, so i can keep the enemy at bay, and force em to get in close at their own risk.)

-Off hand Axe: fell in love with this instantly when i stopped a treb shot with it. Just absolutely love it. Whirling defenses is the best lol. And you can sit behind a gate and attack the rams with it, as you hit em with barrage, entangle and your traps

-Off hand torch: i dont use this weapon that much, but i do find it fun to use when im expecting to find a lot of bunkers. (In WvW if you do it enough, you can start telling just by certain enemy tags that they run either heavy bunkers or not: but that is from my own personal experience, i dont expect everyone to have had that happen to them).

Build: http://www.gw2build.com/builds/simulator.php#1.6.10.4.0.21.31.24.0.31.133.134.135.137.151.4.9.29.0.0.0.394.398.401.408.414.416.423.0.0.0.0.0.0.30.30.10.0

My build is still evolving, largely been concentrating on just playing the game, but this i do with the following build. Also still lvl75

Weaponsets:
1. Axe (Major Precision) & Warhorn Superior Blood (steal life)
2. Axe (+Major Precision) & Torch + Major Flame (AoE flame burst)

  • I like the midrange a lot, the warhorn gives great support, while the torch gives some extra fire and damage combo. The Idea behind +Major Precision is to get the crit chance up, so the effects trigger more often. Both my Axes have the same mod, stacks remain when i swap my weapons.

Utility skills
6. Healing: Spring (this way i can heal my allies aswell)
7. Fire Trap (for damage)
8. Spike Trap (for damage and cripple)
9. Lightning reflexes (extra dodges, and breakstun)
10. Elite: Sylvari racial, Take root (invul. and 5 turrets)

Being midrange the traps are used either to try and stop critters from going for the backline, or i roll in and back to lay traps at the Foes feet. The Spring also doubles as a combo to heal the front line with water pickup.

Traits:
1. Marksman 10 – +10% dam. when endurance is full
2. Skirmish 30 – 5sec vigor when hit with crit, 10% more dam. with Axe, trapeffect last longer and traps recharge faster.
3. Wilderness 20 – gain vigor when using a heal, offhand longer range and faster recharge
4. Nature 10 – regeneration applied last 33% longer
*Obviously with corresponding passive traits, but not listed..

Mainly buffs to damage, recharges, and healing… On the list to perhaps change out,
is the offhand training, for ‘oak skin’ for even more survivability.

Pets.
1. Hyena, esp. for the F2 skill, summon ally Hyena, an extra body comes in very handy when in a larger fight.
2. Still testing the waters, going from Moa, to Spider, sometimes a bird (esp. if i am traveling and don’t want a big pet in my screen).

Thats it

We are peace, we are war. We are how we treat each other and nothing more…

Spirit Ranger Build (PvP)

Intro: I’ve been running a spirit ranger for the longest time now, and I thought I would share my build and knowledge with others who are looking to play something different. Hopefully you guys enjoy the build as much as I do. As the title implies, this is a build that I’ve only tested in PvP and had great success with. I’m not sure how good it would be in PvE, but I wouldn’t recommend it unless you change the runes and the first two major traits for wilderness survival. Feel free to message me in game with any questions you might have: Deku God (Anvil Rock)

Here is the link to my build: http://tinyurl.com/DekuGod

Summary: This build is very versatile and well-rounded as it can support in team fights while being a decent roamer. It can deal medium-high condition damage, and exceeds in most 1v1 fights ;(Heavy conditions might cause problems, in which case you might be forced to use elite to help clear them or revive you.) The survivability of the build revolves around dodges/evasive skills, so timing is crucial as it can help evade any burst damage. The elite skill also requires timing, but it can be a huge game changer in team fights. This build can remove a fair amount of conditions, but might require additional support from a guardian if the enemy team has a heavy condition comp. or if being cc’d in team fights. The only difficult thing about this build is timing your elite, but it’s moderately easy to learn.

Pros:
+ ~2.9k Armor/18k Health
+ Medium-high condition damage
+ Medium Mobility
+ Revives from Elite
+ Radiation Field
+ Simple Combos

Cons:
- No Quick Stomp
- No Stunbreaker
- Can be Kited easily
- Struggles against heavy condition damage
- Close ranged combat

Deku’s Battle Tips: Have your spirits up whenever possible for the protection/burning on hit. Start off a fight with Warhorn+Axe: Call of The Wild (5)>Hunter’s Call (4)>Winter’s Bite (3)>Sharpening Stone > Splitblade (2). At this point you should have closed the gap between you and your enemy, and should proceed to use your spirit actives. If they land, this makes an easy set up for Lynx Skill (F2). After exhausting your axe skills, switch weapons near the enemy to inflict bleeding (Geomancy Sigil). The order here is less important, but try to predict what your enemy will do. (A lot of people panic when you get close to them, so they just spam their skills…For those people, I like to start off with two evasive skills); Sword+ Dagger: Serpent’s Strike (3)>Stalker’s Strike (4)>Crippling Talon (5)>Hornet Sting/Monarch’s Leap (2). Spam Basic Attack (1) and Dodges (V), while you wait for weapon swap. You can use Monarch’s Leap + Healing Spring for an Extra Heal. Your ‘secret’ weapon comes from Runes of Rata Sum, and can help you deal tremendous damage when fighting on nodes. Radiation Field is proc’d at a 50% chance of getting hit and has a 120s recharge.

Spirit of Nature: “Summon a spirit that heals allies. Command the spirit to revive and cure conditions on nearby allies.” This elite skill has a 240s recharge, but can be extremely rewarding and change the outcome of games. It lasts for 60s and you are able to activate it twice within that time period. In 1v1s watch your health and the enemy’s health. Summoning the elite right away would be a waste; judge how much damage your enemy deals. If you feel like you’re at a disadvantage summon it at around 9k Hp (Try to activate it right before you go down; ~1-3k Hp Depending how many people are attacking you). In team fights watch your teammates’ Health. You will want to activate it sooner in case anyone goes down; the spirit will rez anyone in close proximity, so be sure not be standing too far away. Note that the elite can be interrupted; Nature Magic Trait (VII) will rez you if the spirit gets killed while you are downed.

Reminders:
Don’t Forget to use both pets; Wolf can fear enemies when you’re downed (F2)
Stomp enemies with sword + dagger to build up condition damage (Corruption Sigil)
Combo Finishers: Sword + Dagger (2/5), Axe + Warhorn (1/2)
Wilderness Survival Traits: Empathic Bond > Condition Team; Bark Skin > Burst Team
Review all your traits to get the max benefits in any situation

I’ve been playing a ranger since launch and used pretty much every build possible, from my experience with this I’ve come up with a high damage, high critical build that will yield a lot of damage and also keep you alive.

http://www.guildhead.com/skill-calc#mmoc0M0zMmvaoMmvaoMppaa0zamaoV08kiQ707khs7070M7kIW70V7ofD70m

Now before you start bombing my build here lol it’s important that you understand what it’s all about. This build utilizes a uncommon tactic with rangers… shifting quickly from ranged to melee (as most rangers stay ranged or melee). It will take some practice until you can effectively use the two to deliver maximum damage with incredible survivbility.
Where u may lack in large amounts of hp and toughness u make up for it in fast endurance regeneration and highly mobile utility and weapon skills including condition removing.
When it comes to dps critical chance is the name of the game, this build stats wise puts an emphasis on mostly the power stat and some precision, this is where the sigil of perception on your longbow comes in, boosting it up to par with your power stat to give you a high critical chance with a powerful punch to go with it.

With QZ and rampage as one you have fast damage output, lightning reflexes is there for you when things get hairy as well as an effective way to shift from melee to ranged, signet of renewel for constant condition removal. All 3 of these utility skills are also stun breakers which when it comes to survivability is a must. Combine that with vigor boon popping up if hit by critical damage, regeneration, damage increased by 20% when flanking and with full endurance, including 5% damage boost when your pet is with you (the 5% boost is given even if the pet is dead), swiftness and fury when swapping weapons (which you will do alot). I use troll unguent for its relatively fast recharge, high healing and mobile properties, heal as one doesn’t heal enough and healing spring prevents you from moving around (which is the very principle of this build).

When it comes to pets i like to use a brown bear for additional condition removing and a fern hound for a nice regeneration boon. Both these pet types survive quite well in PvE and even dungeons if managed right. But this build doesn’t really focus and any specific type of pet, use which ever pet you think seems right.

This build by the way can be used in WvW and even PvP, but i wouldn’t recommend it unless you had very good handling of this build.

Anyway i hope you enjoy this build as much i do , i apologize if this post was a bit long, but as you just read the potential of this build is both promising as well as quite fun

This is my current build, and although I’m not doing A LOT of damage. I can keep it consistent with pretty decent damage and I am tanky as hell, as well as my pet.

http://www.guildhead.com/skill-calc#mVom0M0zMoRgvMMRgvM9MfpxoVsMab08khA707khA7070M7kNf70M7kNh70M

I get Decent Power from Nature’s Wrath and Strenght of Spirit paired up with Reyna’s Armor for Condition Damage, Vitality and Healing Power. Boosting my survivability as well as my damage with those 2 traits and giving me condition damage since my actual Power won’ be that great.

I have been trying this for a few days and I can tank most of the mobs face to face like nothing xD (And of course my Healing Spring and my Moa Healing me help a lot too, plus the passive Regen fro the Signet)

EDIT: And all this without trinkets since I haven’t had the chance to get them yet so I’m still with like level 80s Masterwork Magic Find Trinkets lol, and without runes as of yet since I just spent a lot on my berserker armor and runes too but I might get rid of those to finish the trinkets since Pure DPS on Ranger seems to have been depleted by a lot anyway xD

My current PVE build.

This build isn’t about you doing omg wtf awesomesauce damage, but keeping your pets alive and dealing damage with you. If your pet is dead you aren’t doing all the damage you can do. Of course they will die on occassion from being too dumb to evade a giant red circle, use return [F3], and swap [f4] as best as you can to avoid it.
With massive group events you’ll find your pet dies more often because of event scaling, but your pet will shine with smaller scale events/general pve solo’ing.

My leveling and PvE beastmastery build (currently I’m nearing lvl 50) I made it for fun since I didn’t want to just shoot stuff and ignore my pet, but I also like a more active playstyle, so there is lots of weapon and pet swapping to do for self-buffs and pet buffs.

I’ve found that it’s a blast to play and is still pretty effective so far. Here’s a shortened bit of the text portion of my build copied and pasted, the skills, traits, and extra tips are on the page I linked to the Guild Wars 2 Database.

Noteworthy Synergy + Buffs

Companion’s Might – Your critical hits give your pet a stack of might

Pet Attribute Increase – Every point spent in the beastmastery trait line increases your pets’ total attributes by 1%, for a total of 30. That equals out to a bonus of 515 extra power for Canine pets at level 80, for instance. This is an incredible boost to your pets’ overall effectiveness.

Spotter – Gives your pet (and other allies) 70 precision (which translates into critical rating for you and your pet)

Pet’s Prowess – Your pet’s criticals do 30% more damage

Mighty Swap – Pets gain 3 stacks of might when swapped into combat (F4)

Loud Whistle – Cooldown of pet swap is reduced by 20%

Furious Grip – Weapon swaps give 20% critical chance, which means more might stacks for the pet

Zephyr’s Speed – You and your pet gain 2 seconds of quickness (not to be confused with swiftness) when swapping

Rampage as One – In addition to all the other lovely things that come with our elite skill, your attack hits give a stack of might to your pet, and your pets hits give you a stack of might. This is important, and we’ll come back to this shortly

Speed Training – Shaves off a few seconds on your pets’ basic attack moves, I was using shout master for more frequent “Sic ’em!” use, but I realized I was holding the skill until the cooldown of Rampage as One was back up anyways, since they overlap nicely. I also stay away from Master’s Bond because I think swapping pets removes the stacking buff.

Beastmaster’s Bond – Not totally amazing in that you can’t completely control the damage your pet takes, but if you can let her dip below 50% before healing her up, you can steal some extra damage out of the exchange

The Strategy

To start, first engage at range with your shortbow to get into combat, Immediately switch pets (F4) to give your swapped pet 3 stacks of might and send it in (F1, using the key is faster usually than waiting for the AI to register combat)

With your new pet out, you now have swiftness, so immediately queue up Rampage as One, “Sic ’em!”, and summon your Frost Spirit

Now with your pet decently buffed up, swap to your longbow (adding a stack of Fury for longer duration) and lay into the monster with Rapid Fire (2) or if there are 2 or more monsters, do Barrage (5) first, then pick one and use Rapid Fire. Your pet now will have at least 15 stacks of might from your hits (due to Rampage as One) in addition to some stacks from the enhanced critical chance of Barrage/Rapid Fire giving you some stacks from Companion’s Might.

Switch to shortbow right after you launch off those two longbow skills. You will get and maintain the last of your pet’s might stacks with shortbow because its superior attack speed. Poison Volley adds a few extra stacks if you can hit the all 5 shots of the cone onto targets (or just 1 target if you’re close enough)

Now keep an eye on your pet, because once she’s done with her rampage, her might stacks are going to plummet very quickly. After most of her stacks are gone (less than 3 remain) switch pets again.

The newly swapped pet will have 3 stacks of might and swiftness again. Take this time to heal up, pop signets, kite around, use pet specials (F2) and take down any low-health enemies. “Sic ’em!” should come off cooldown 1 minute after the initial rampage, use it immediately by itself to give yourself another smaller spike of burst damage.

Swap back to longbow (again gaining Fury) and use Rapid Fire (2) or Barrage (5) to try to get some lucky criticals to boost your pet’s might stacks.

Keep on rocking until Rampage as One and “Sic ’em!” come off cooldown again (this time they should at the same time) and start the fun all over again.

Thanks for reading, and happy mauling.

Manekk’s TAN spec is Tough As Nails!

This is what I use for roaming in 3Ws (because it’s fun and the zergs make me lag) or rather what I want it to be still missing the precision infusions for them but something like this is the plan anyway.

Tough as nails is a good description, both you and you cats are sturdy as hell, you got solid steady damage with great burst in your cats and if your signet or sigil fails to take care of any conditions you have exellent healing from your pet, runes and pies combined to take the edge off most of them, against weaker opponents you won’t even use your dedicated heal.

A small note on traits the obvious one you wouldn’t have to take is soften the fall I just like it and often find myself jumping cliffs to escape larger groups when I’m solo, the bonus is they surprisingly often follow you over the cliff without their class equivalent and subsequently die

http://gw2buildcraft.com/calculator/ranger/?6.3|5.1n.h19|c.1n.h19.8.1n.h4|1n.a7.1n.a7.1n.a7.1n.a7.1n.a7.1n.a7|211.d14.211.d1a.311.d1a.211.d1a.311.d1a.2s.d1a|0.a1.u14b.0.u57c|56.7|4j.4q.4o.4r.55|e

I hope you enjoy if you decide to try it.

edit: I have reconsidered empathic bond and now use it over barkskin I didn’t like it because I felt it too easily got your pet killed but while using sigil of generosity and signet of renewal (passive cleanses both you and pet didn’t know this before) it just makes you really freaking resistant to conditions along with your already high armor.

4k Attack Ranger Build

My current set-up is missing the back piece and earring but i’m still hitting ~4090 attack before might. Build also features ~20k hp with 2.2k armor and 47% crit (with fury from Elite) and 86% crit dmg.

This is a versatile PvE/WvW Direct Damage Build build.

Choices/thought processes:

Why Longbow?
Longbow is the highest direct damage dealing weapon the ranger has and has the longest attack range in the game when traited. As this build focuses on Attack, this is my ranged weapon of choice. Rapid fire is reliably hitting for 10k dmg on most targets and is on an 8s CD with the trait; barrage hits for roughly the same amount but having someone stand in it for the full duration is rare (and being hit for every tick since aoe can only hit 5 targets). Auto attack crits hit for roughly 2.3k dmg (range from 2k to 2.5k dmg). Also: the 10stax of vulnerability from hunter’s shot increases damage BEYOND what is linked.

Greatsword?
Because greatsword is awesome and is the Rangers best melee weapon in my opinion. The main hand sword lets you use a warhorn or perhaps torch (for on demand fiery shield = more might) but you CANT MOVE WHILE AUTO ATTACKING. This didn’t used to be a deal breaker for me in other games, but i cant stand it now. Also, swoop is a 1100unit leap on a 12 second cooldown (you can keep up to a target running with swiftness by using this skill alone) and allows you to position yourself however you want in battle, including keeping yourself at max range or for closing for the kill. In addition you have the evade on auto attack, a block and an interupt. Maul does less damage than it might with another build, but it still hits for roughly 4.5-5k dmg before the bleed factors in.

Why not Bow/Bow, Bow/Axe+XXX?
Because the main benefit of a ranged weapon cannot be utilised in close-quarters combat, and the damage and skillset of ranged weapons reflects this: Melee weapons are limited by their range and thus have higher values to compensate. Also: REFLECTION. Too many times do I see rangers RAPID FIRING into a thief using DAGGER STORM; all that damage you are putting out is coming straight back to you, a Melee alternative is almost a necessity to combat skills that either reflect or absorb projectiles.

Protect Me?
This build doesn’t focus on pet usage so this is really just a 6s invulnerability. Can always swap pet if its about to die, and get that extra quickness goodness in there too. Alternately you could take Signet of Stone and exchange “Remorseless” (Marksmanship XII) for “Signets of the Beastmaster” (Marksmanship XI). Personally I prefer Remorseless as it lets you achieve 20stax of Vulnerability when starting in on a new foe.

Signet of the Hunt?
I personally dont use the active portion, and just use this as my speed boost modifier in-lieu of swiftness most of the time. Alternate skill would probably be Frost spirit.

Lightning Reflexes?
Stunbreaker that jumps me back, deals damage and gives me vigor? Yes please.

Rampage as One Vs Entangle
If i have a party member that gives out reliable fury, I swap to Entangle for the overpowered snare, but otherwise the extra damage from Rampage is hard to pass up.

Usage:

Open up with Huntershot and a Rapidfire at max range. It takes some getting used to but since your range is so far with the trait, the arrow takes a good long time to get there, you can use your skills BEFORE the range if you are still closing on your target and have them hit (therefore your effective range is slightly larger than the 1500units stated. Most players will Dodgeroll at least SOME of your rapidfire, so follow up with a Barrage. Many people will also dodgeroll out of this circle. Now that your burst is on cooldown, swap to Greatsword, Swoop in and auto-attack/hiltbash, burning your defensive utilities as needed. By the time your weapon swap is ready, all your Longbow skills have recharged, so swap right away, Point-Blank-Shot them away and follow up with another Huntershot/Rapidfire combo. Rinse/repeat, though many players will be looking to escape (if in a 1v1 encounter) at this point so you can just Longbow Auto-attack them down.

Closing Comments:

Just so everyone knows, Rangers are the profession that can reach the highest Attack stat (due to Nature Magic V: ‘Strength of Spirit’), so I’m tired of people calling them under-powered.

I coming here to kinda use this as a sounding board to pitch my ideas to fellow rangers and get feedback. I am still in the process of leveling my ranger, but this is a planned eventuality for a build to go in mostly PvP. I think this could be powerful though and decent in PvE as well.

The proposed build is 30/0/20/0/20 and rely’s heavily on bleeds/conditions.
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fMUQNAV3XjAVB2JWGWs2Bi1DARoB1UQp+/U0K1nyUyQbSA-jkyAocMk2QkpABiWgQFycOsIasl2ioxqkJiqV3Y28ioVDA-w

For the gear I think going Rampager for the armor and accessories went Rabid. With Superior Runes of the Adventurer/Vital Infusions for weapons I think that for range going SB is superior to LB due to the fact that anyone in PvP is going to close with you quickly and mitigate the damage increase you would get from LB at max range. Then for melee with a bit of range going double ax as the ax off-hand gives whirling defense. Also, as this build rely on bleed/condition damage both weapons sets have good abilities to cause your foe to bleed.

Do these stats stack up with your other ranger builds? Power 2314 Condition Damage 1448 Condition duration 30% Crit Chance 27% Armor 3088 and HP of 17,892. For a medium armor wearer I think it is awesome having greater than 3k armor. I am sure there are Warriors/Guardians which can shame that figure, but for leather I think this is pretty good?

I have done other builds which are similar but mostly changed the gear to go more HP over condition damage. This leads to roughly a 24k hp and a meager 400 condition damage.

I think having a 1448 condition damage with the +10% duration and having a feline/devourer pet both have good bleeds. One being a ranged and other melee. I think having a feline that can stun on demand(pounce) is better than one granting might(roar) and vastly superior to the panther’s stealth which would only be helpful in certain situations.

I think the playstyle speaks for itself in that you would want to stack bleeds on as many people as possible and keeping pet up is going to be extremely helpful. While it isn’t as vital as some pet builds having your pet and you constantly applying bleeds will help if someone is out there doing condition removals. With that comes a question of mechanics. Do condition removal effects remove all stacks of a condition IE 10 stack bleed or is it simply remove one stack? So in the case of removing all stacks is it better to stack multiple conditions or just keep spamming the same condition? Basically is it better to have a spider/canine pet that poisons/fear over a cat/devourer that will bleed? Then obviously would change out the major trait in BM of Rending Attacks in favor of Intimidation Training.

I also like the fact that picking up in the last tear of MS the BM trait of signets affecting you as well. 10 sec invulnerable + Rampage as one could stack some serious burst with little fear of dying. Let me know what you think. Any tips advise is much appreciated

This is the build i usually run with, WvW/PvE (Condition Dmg)

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fMQQNAV8fjEVR2BWKWo2BilCBFo2DOZeLxUYIGlxLlIjB-jUyAINBZyCABCmGBlDLiGb1sIasaGMFMgOeR1BBwL-w

Weapons

*Shortbow
– I like the shortbow, made this build with shortbow has main weapon in mind; i just spam nº1 skill has an offense, the rest is just situational/defensive.

*Sword & Torch/Dagger
– I love the sword so i mixed a few builds around so i could get a good use out of it, i like the might it gives to the pet (Skill nº1), the evasion and the leap. Used primarily the dagger has an offhand for the extra dodge and the cripple ranged but found myself preferring the torch for the burning and the combo field fire; and since i run a heavy condition build the more on target the merrier, and for me fire>poison.

Skills

*Heal- I prefer the Healing Spring for the condition remove, but Troll’s Ungeant works great also.

*Quickening Zephyr- I like it for the “nuking” potencial, i tend to use it when i pop Rampage as One or whenever is out of cooldown, and with the Sword and Dagger combo the quickness makes you be all over the place.

*Signet of the Hunt- I like it for the bonus speed, nut now it’s even better, i pop it before since the pet stays with the buff for quite a while and pretty much pop it whenever its up in combat.

*Signet of the Wild- Only for the passive, never ever use this, it isn’t huge but it helps you and your pet.

*Alternatives- Spike Trap, I use it has an alternative to QZ (Quickening Zephyr) for the bonus bleed and cripple; use it to quite around people and keep a decent distance if needed.

*Entangle- I prefer using Entangle has the Elite, mostly for the Immobilize even if for just a second, if more better then it stacks bleed, and it’s great for escapes if you need. The alternative is Rampage as One it’s great if your pet lives long enough and with the QZ the might stacks quite fast then activate the Signet of the Hunt and your pet should do a boatload of damage, the sprint is nice to persue/flee.

Traits
I use 20/20/30/0/0

*Marksmanship
I use 20 points in the Marks trait mainly for the bow. The 10 I chose the Keen Edge (@75% health use Sharpening Stone), a good alternative is the Signet Master (-20%CD on Signets) but since i only activate the Signet of the Hunt i like the bleeds better. For the 20 i chose Piercing Arrows, why? MOAR ARROWS 4 EVRYONE! It’s a must for running bow imo.

*Survival
The 20 in Survival are for more condition dmg and bow buffing, and the passives are quite nice too (sprint and fury on weapon swap). The 10 i chose the Sharpened Edges (chance to apply bleed on crits), more bleeds is allways good has a condi ranger. At the 20 i went for the Quick Draw (-20% bow activating skills) again the more arrow allways better, no one is left out. Haven’t played with alternatives here but for those that like axes there might be something there for you.

*Wilderness Survival
The bulk of the build, with Toughness and Condition Damage, the first and second passives are great imo, more dodging and each dodging giving 2secs of Protection (-33%inc dmg) is not to be discarted lightly. For the 10 I opted for the Wilderness Knowledge (-20%CD on Survival Skills, so QZ and Entangle are faster) but pretty much every other option is good just fit it to your playstyle. At 20 i chose the Off-Hand Training (-20%CD and + Range on Offhand weapons (Torch/Dagger)) other options that come with the 20 points unlock are pretty crappy imo, maybe a few in the first tier would be good here, but i like this quite alot. Has for the 30 it’s the same philosophy, i chose the Martial Mastery (-20%CD on Swords Abilities), the alternatives are ok, pet pulling conditions from you (might get ur pet killed faster :/) and Barkskin (-30% dmg taken while at <25% HP)

Has for gear you can see in the link i opted for Rabid (Precision/Toughness/Condition Damage) on pretty much everything, because of the runes i chose with are the Undead (+183Cond Dmg; +50 Toughness; and 5% Toughness to Condi Dmg). Why did i went this way? Pretty much cause my healing power isn’t that great so i decided to make my HP be worth more with Toughness, wich my build already brings me by the dozen, so might aswell take it.

Sorry if it is to long, it’s my first try at this. Oh and i did no math whatsoever to verify it. It’s just how i run around, any input and math stuff are very welcome =) or have a more decent ranger try it out and pick up flaws. Thank you for Reading and the previous builds.

The time has come to reveal my build to the world.

PvP BM Build

http://bit.ly/12pl9rW

IMHO the best possible PvP build, not only as ranger, but generally. It has been amazing for a few months.

Fight should be begun with Axe and Warhorn and: Call of the Wild (5), Winter’s Bite (3), Rending Pounce (Lynx’s F2), Hunter’s Call (4), Spitblade (2).

Next swap to Jaguar and Shortbow: Cripple Shot (4), Stalk (Jaguar’s F2), “Sick’ Em” (7), Poison Volley (2), Quick Shot (3), Concussion Shot (5).

Between skills using spam 1 (Ricochet and Cross Fire), swap weapons every 10 sec, swap pet at least every 30 sec to use their F2.

I prefer to not use Singet of Renewal and Signet of the Wild, a little too long CD and without them it may be tough.

Use Rampage As One for fights with more than 1 enemy or fighting against bunker, like some guardians.

Weakness: Not enough Conditions removers.

Try it before you judge.

http://gw2buildcraft.com/calculator/ranger/?6.3|5.1n.h1h|c.1n.h1h.g.1n.h4|1n.71d.1n.71d.1n.71d.1n.71d.1n.71h.1n.71h|2v.d13.2v.d13.3v.d19.2v.d13.3v.d19.2s.d14|0.k15.5.p36.k57|15.7|4j.4q.4o.4r.55|e

about 2k power, 60% critchance, 64% critdamage, 3k armor and 18k health, between weaponswaps, warhorn and elite you can potentially have permanent fury, swiftness and about 6-10 mightstacks, high uptime of regen in 27s out of every 30s (not taking boonstripping into account)

Using Jaguar here with bleeds on crits should produce a fairly high number of bleeds that do alot of damage with the cat buffed with a decent uptime on swiftness, fury and 15-25 mightstacks on your pet that are coming directly from the ranger weaponswaps aswell as the new companion’s might trait (this will likely be a full 25mightstack for the full elite duration and will also spike for certain skills at all times).

  • Weapons: Full Knight, shortbow and sword+warhorn
  • Armor: Full Knight armor
  • Trinkets: Cavalier trinkets, berserker backpiece
  • Slotskills: I will use is troll unguent, signet of the hunt, signet of renewal, signet of wild and rampage as one elite.
  • Runes: 4Dwayna+2Water
  • Sigil: Battle+Bloodlust
  • Consumables: Lemongrass poultry soup+Master maintenance oil

This is an offensive build and alot of the damage requires you to keep pressure and attacking your opponent otherwise your pet will drop the mightstacks and you’ll notice the nerf on pets instantly (not so much cats, but other pets definetly).

If you would prefer stronger more reliable regen you can swap to full dwayna runes and add in as many cleric armor pieces over knight as you like at the price of slightly lower armor and critchance, another possible change could be dropping signet of the hunt since swiftness has such a high uptime and use muddy terrain for extra control.

I’m also considering swapping out the shortbow for longbow because of how the channels work with companion’s might you’re basically in “miniature RaO mode” all the time, hunter’s call hawks, barrage etc pump your pet full of might at all times.

For pve/dungeons the exact same setup works perfectly all you need to do is swap in as many pieces of berserker armor as you are comfortable with for a very high dps spec.

Melee Skirmisher ranger:
http://kichwas.wordpress.com/2013/06/26/gw2-build-skirmishing-hardy-ranger/

Designed for PvE use:
This is a ‘balanced’ dungeon build, somewhat ‘tanky’. You will have moderately high aggro, but you will not be subject to one shots.

I build to be sort of in between melee and ranged. Weapon choices of Sword / Torch and Axe / Axe. A melee option that pops in and out a lot, and a ranged choice is fairly close in.

This is my percentage build. Since pets are a non consistent damage percentage I tried to find traits which gave us percentage to damage bonus. This is what I came up with.
http://gw2buildcraft.com/calculator/ranger/?6.0|1.1g.h4|0.0.0.0.0.0|1c.7p.1c.7p.1c.7p.1c.7p.1c.7p.1c.7p|2u.0.2u.0.3u.0.2u.0.3u.0.2s.0|a1.u17c.5.p69.0|39.0|4i.4q
10% at full endurance,10%flanking,5% with Greatsword,5% with boon= a nice possible 30% damage buff

I just theorycrafted this build up,and I was wondering if anyone could take a look at it and tell me if this is something that will be viable for roaming/taking over camps in WvW.
EDIT: I forgot to add the link, here it is: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fMAQNAR8YnAVEYZlFaBhahAZVQP6H0E+B+z9w/8kQMlXdipUB-TsAA1CtIkRJjTGjMSZsyM+Y9xuBA

Weapon choices:
-The GS for roaming and stun plus block

-Sword and dagger mainly for the 3 evades plus you got a cripple on OH 5 for chasing,OH 5 works well with GS 3 for chasing.

Pet choices:
-Jungle Stalker for 5 might stacks

-Brown Bear for the combo with “Protect me!”,plus F2 cures condition every 25 sec.(Not much but still, it’s something). And of course for the brown bear pet skill “Defy Pain”,which gives you immunity to dmg for a few sec, every 45 sec.

Healing skill:
-Troll Unguent for the HOT effect on me AS WELL on my pet because I think it will work nice in conjunction with “Protect Me!”.

Utility Skills
-Signet of the Hunt for the obvious constant roaming speed.
-Lightning Reflexes for an evade plus 13 sec of vigor.
-“Protect me!” as 6 sec of invulnerability, now this is why I chose the Brown Bear. If possible I’ll always use “Protect me!” with the bear because of the high vitality the pet got (4k).

Elite Skill
-Entangle for the root and huge bleed stack.

Traits goes as this, 10,15,15,30,0
-10 Marksmanship for Opening Strike (Vulnerability on first strike) and Beastmasters Bond (Gain Fury and Might when your pets health reaches 50%).
-15 Skirmishing for Tail Wind (Gain Swiftness when swapping weapons in combat), Primal Reflexes (Gain 5 seconds of Vigor when struck by a critical hit,15 sec CD) and Furious Grip (Gain Fury when swapping weapons in combat).
-15 Wilderness Survival for Natural Vigor (Increases Endurance Regeneration by 50%), Vigorous Renewal (Gain Vigor when using a heal skill, works with Troll Unguent) and Companion’s Defense (You and your pet gain 2 seconds of protection when you dodge roll).
-30 Nature Magic for Rejuvenation (Gain regeneration when your health reaches 75%), Nature’s Protection (Receive Protection for 5 seconds when you take damage greater than 10% of your maximum health in a single strike. 30 sec CD), Fortifying Bond (Any Boon you get is shared with your pet), Two Handed Training (Extra 5% damage with GS), Bountiful Hunter (You and your pet deals 5% more damage while you have a Boon) and the last one, Nature’s Voice (Shouts apply Regenaration (10 sec) and Swiftness (10 sec) to allies. 360 degree radius. Obviously for the shout “Protect Me!”.

That covered the traits, now the armor, runes and sigils:
-Soldier stats with Superior Rune of Balthazar;
-POWER (480) Toughness (224) and Vitality (224)
You’ll also get a Burn for every heal you do, which lasts for 3,45 sec.
+ you get Haste for 5 seconds everytime your health falls below 20%,90 sec CD.
Trinkets,all soldier stats.

The sigil I chose for the GS is Superior Sigil of Energy ( Gain 50% of your endurance when you swap to this weapon in combat),one free dodge roll.
Same sigil on the MH sword but on the OH dagger I picked Superior Sigil of Life ( Gives +10 healing everytime you kill a foe,max 25 stacks). Just kill 25 mobs before you go roaming.

Now,criticism both positive and negative are very much appreciated! Atm I don’t have the option of recording footage of this build in action.

About
This build is mainly used for solo roaming, although you can use it also when tailing with a zerg. Just remember that this is no support build at all, it is a build to put down people quickly before returning to the back of the battle front.

When running, you can always switch the Shortbow with a Greatsword (mine has P/V/T) so you can use #3 for quick runs and #4 to get into a tower under attack..

Concept of the build
Get to a camp as quick as you can, send in your melee pet, cast the Troll Unguent (so that the pet, who is taking aggro, will survive for a bit), put down Entangle, get your longbow and Barrage, get in a line of enemies and start attacking (piercing arrows).
Make sure to switch to your next pet before the melee pet dies (so you don’t get stuck with a 60 second recharge).

When encountering players, bear in mind that you’re a berserker, so make sure that you don’t get hit too much.. With some training, you can easily take out 3 invaders with your full berserker gear (depending of course on the classes of your enemies – QQ @ thieves ;-) )

As mentioned: you can die easily with this build (you’re glass cannon), so adjust your play style to that: Don’t run next to the guards and warriors in the frontline of the battle, but stay ranged. Only run up to an enemy for the killshot, once he’s downed, get back (another player will finish him of – you can always barrage the downed area to keep others from ressing)

Any questions/comments/remarks are of course more than welcome! :-)
