Just so you all know Jon Peters (you know, the same lead game designing Dev that said pet AI they don’t know how to fix pet AI because it’s tied to mob AI) said that 1h sword is working as intended.

Don’t believe me? Go sifting through the Dec 10th balance thread. It’s in there. I’m not going to find it in there for you as I already read it.

I don’t care. I like the sword as is. I don’t feel the need to have it changed. I use #2 and #3 to dodge. I can break animation/bind easily. I even use it with auto-attack and still don’t have problems.

I sincerely believe it is a L2P issue unlike the pets that are an actual and admitted problem.

RNG is a bell curve. Better hope you’re on the right side.

I agree with everything said here. Ranger class does have some glaring issues (Furiously watches my Wolf F2 cancel itself because he wanted to reposition,) but the sword isn’t really one of them.

I want to see a buff to Monarch Leap, that’s about it.

Those were good times. The whole build was focused on the pet and the player was basically playing the pet.

Always was funny to just run around with a couple defense skills and auto attack while my Dire Crab mauled someone to death just as fast as a war could. Plus, the selection of pets was awesome. I loved my dire rat and crab. Not to mention the huge-kitten Rainbow Phoenix.

My Hearty Wolf I never stopped having until the Menagerie. I tamed it back in Pre-Searing Ascalon and it was the constant companion for my ranger. Any other pet didn’t really feel . . . incredibly nice to me.

I did eventually run around with a Black Moa when I got my Black Moa Chick for pure redundant moa-ness. To me the pets in GW1 suffered from no real identity other than appearance.

Rangers need a new high dps weapon to use in dungeon’s speedruns, you dont need the leaps from the sword if the boss is usually rooted in place. Necros also have a problem with speedruns because they dont have a high dps weapon that cleaves.

Until ANet fixes these issues we will still see a lot of lfg posts that says “lfm full zerk. No ranger/necro”

Those are noob groups. Avoid them. Most speed run groups are full of noobs. Just start your own party or join another.

Sword auto-attack is amazing. If you don’t know what that leap is, go have a chat with Subject Alpha in CoE p2/p3 and you’ll see. That’s a dodge. If it’s timed properly, you can auto-attack the entire fight while having a cup of tea. I’m kidding, but seriously, that’s an awesome skill chain.
And to break it you can use this massive tip: press Escape or even use 2.

Best fun ever is sword/warhorn + axe/axe and jungle stalker + snow leopard as pets.

One gripe i have with the sword for ranger is how it’s completely not working with regullar dodge. Normally when on other character i press dodge, it interrupts curremt action and dodges, not questions asked.

With the ranger however it seems the sword just won’t let it go and either i time it in between chain hits or i got a problem.

Poster number one is a PvE player that wants extra survivability.

Poster number two is a PvP player that uses it to stick to the target and keeping him permanently crippled.

More like: Poster number one is a PvE player that can’t turn auto attacks off, can’t use sword #3 and can’t switch weapons when needed.

Sword is the best weapon ranger has as it is and it does not need even a little change.

If I didn’t even had to think I’d roll a warrior.

It takes no more skill to tap 1 twice then it does to keep keep auto attack on. So don’t flatter yourself and please come down from the pedestal you are sitting on.

It’s simply an annoying feature that should have been changed eons ago.

If that was the case then no one would be complaining about the 1h sword AA.

I’m willing to bet the very first weapon addition to ranger will address this with a new 1h melee weapon (hatchet or something?) A lot of us are extremely happy with the sword. I actually switched to ranger specifically because of the sword and it would be devastating to take that away from us for no good reason.

I’m the other end of the curve from you, Fluff. As it stands, rangers have one viable damage weapon. It works in a way antithetical to the game’s whole “dodge to avoid damage” approach. Since it’s impossible to actually use the dodge (note, bashing 2 does NOTHING during the leaps, so that’s out – same with bashing 3) it’s what’s driven me away from the ranger – that and the kittening pets.

Were we to get an actually useable 1h weapon (say, dagger) with a decent damage chain that allows us to dodge? Yeah – that’d be great.

Whether or not it’s supposed to work like this, I’d like a slight change to make it easier to use. My problem isn’t the dodging per say. I snake bite and dodge and #2 and I’m fine most of the time. I just can’t disengage quickly if there’s a dangerous mob. Particularly in WvW. Surprise, here they are! Break away! I dodge back and then take another second to flip around and run, and by then I’m CC’d. If there was a skill that let me leap forward rather than back, or if I could roll forward and reliably break from the target lock, I could have that extra precious second.

This weapon is not fun to use on Edge of the mists..

A lot of the bosses are at the end of a island without any fencing what so ever.
When the boss is dead you often are still in your skill chain which makes you leap to some random place and most of the time… Over the edge…

Just curious. How many other professions have to;
rely on a single weapon to do good dps,
learn when they can dodge with it,
learn when they can evade with it,
learn when they can disengage with it,
learn how to fight with auto attack off,
learn to fight with auto targeting on,
learn how to position and reposition themselves repeatedly during fights,
assuming their reaction time is good enough.
to master the use of it before becoming consistently effective in combat?

It’s great that we have found ways to use some of the swords odder mechanics for our benefit but we need to keep it in perspective with the other professions. Even the development team has remarked on making gameplay less difficult.

Whole darn game would be a lot more “skill-based” (read difficult) I think if all weapon mastering had these intricacies. Not saying I love all of them all the time, but I did find ways to exploit those crazy physics from time to time. (like the 180-free_camera backwards wasp leap with a quick targetless forward-followup leap).

It could be argued that it does require a fair bit of experience and coordination while constantly re-acquiring targets and unselecting targets when doing it in Wvw.
