Rangers? Really. Can they even 1:1 or 2:1?
There are tons.
Can you point me in the direction of a viable build?
I realize there are hundreds of builds, but doesn’t mean they are viable for sPVP.
I have a longbow build that I’m looking at but that seems very specific to WvW. Another pet build that looks specific to PvE. Not finding many builds where people are confident in it’s sPVP ability. . .which is maybe why rangers seem useless in sPVP.
It’s just my current perception, that I’m hoping to debunk by locating a tested build.
For spvp you have spirits, rabid/celestial trapper, BM bunker, SotF power builds. And those are just the basics of the builds. There are hundreds of variations of those
I find it curious you haven’t run in to a single ranger bunker in your PvP experience. Ranger condi bunkers are very meta, and have been for a very long time. The Tournament of Legends videos on the GW2 Twitch channel show a ton of rangers in action if you need examples. Almost every team ran a ranger.
Anyway, if you’re talking bunkering, you can take that number up to 1 vs 3 (not indefinitely of course if they’re not idiots, but for long enough to get backup.) Rangers have evades and sustain for days.
In addition to the builds Carp mentioned (except I am not a big fan of longbow in tPvP ever, but whatever), there is quite a bit of a learning curve with ranger compared to something like warrior. 1-hand sword is probably the single best weapon in the game, but it’s a death sentence the first time you use it.

That’s what I run in sPvP all the time. I recommend double dogs or wolf and spider for pets. The idea is to lay down traps while spamming dodges constantly. Don’t stay in one weapon set for too long. Abuse your evades. It’s especially effective in 1v1 and somewhat in 2v1 but beyond that you can survive as long as your evades last.
Beastmaster and regen bunker are also fairly effective builds I’ve seen but don’t have much experience with. Try to avoid running glass cannon longbow/greatsword as those builds tend to lack mobility and survivability for mediocre damage.
That’s all I have for now. best of luck!
Ty all. I’ll research those suggestions.
I don’t sPvP much, but last time I went in there about 2 months ago with my rabid spirit meta build I ended up killing 1v3 the entire opponent team on the node, after they rage quitted and the autobalance kicked in, killed my former teammates and after they left as well, I had to finish Skyhammer by myself. I think that pretty much sums it up. What you have to realize is that for unknown to me reason, the Ranger profession attracts a large portion of the tunnel vision players that think this is WoW where you mash your 3 buttons to insta gib someone. I’ve played with and against rangers that are a total nightmare to kill in anything short of a zerg rush.
But to achieve that – you have to go for a specific build, and you DEFINITELY HAVE TO AVOID power builds.
Go tanky, add some condition damage, let your pet do the job. If he doesn’t pray for help. You’ll still be wrecked by certain roles/classes/builds.
But we are fine in PvP I guess. Just fine.
Ask Pvpmaster Prinzkaos if ranger suck 1v1 lol
Simple answer; Yes, absolutely they can 1v1, and 2v1.
TLDR
…But there are a lot of varying factors, including that even in a 1v1 situation you’re going to meet a better player, with better equipment, and a certain build that out-does your (current) Ranger build.
As a side note, I consistently win in 2v1 encounters (and sometimes even 3v1) under water. It’s wierd, it’s like I get this massive power boost when under water, so I often retreat there when losing a fight—my enemies follow me in there expecting to finish me off but instead they end up dead. Wierd.
