Rangers are universally hated in PvE
Ah, mate, don’t talk nonsense. Ranger complex class? This is philosophical nonsense for the fans. Ranger as simple as heel. All its complexity is limited to coming up with an adequate build in which pet will not die from one spit.
Why rangers do not liked in the dungeons? Because they are useless. Well, it’s true – they are not completely useless. But they lose in utility to any other class.
Why not to take them? Because 80% of the rangers can not produce normal damage, can’t support, their pet dead all the time, and when it alive when, it aggro whole dungeon.
STOP!
Now the question is: do you not look at the situation from the other side – maybe this kind of problem because the class is not that difficult as you want to think, but because he is just weak?
What’s so special about ranger, that you need to exert so much effort and attention, just to be on par with the others?
This, in my opinion, not complexity, but weakness.
On the contrary. I’ve been the target of many compliments, some of which complimented my class as well.
Dungeons in this game are easy. It’s more about player skill than a class’s abilities.
This, absolutely. I’ve never gotten any sort of complaints for being a Ranger, whereas I’ve seen people kicked on multiple occasions for being new to a dungeon.
Admittedly though I have received negative feedback in the Jade Maw fractal due to my pet getting targeted all the time. Even my spirits are sometimes targeted. We suffer more from this than mesmers (phantasms and clones) and necromancers (pets) because they can decide not to use minion-summoning abilities, whereas we cannot stow our pet.
A mesmer that doesn’t use illusions just lost 80% of his damage. Believe it or not, illusions are actually a greater proportion of a mesmer’s damage than ranger pets are with rangers.
The only reason mesmers aren’t in the same state as rangers regarding dungeon AoE is because they can more quickly replace illusions.
If Deceptive Evasion (clone on dodge) were taken out, mesmers would be pretty screwed in PvE as that’s their big clone generation tool.
Completely wrong opinion.
Mesmer’s clones – is part of mesmer. His abilityes work THROUG them. They are designed for conveyor micromanagement “called, he did his job, you blew it and inflicting damage, called the next.”
They, generaly, appear right next to the enemy and do not require any speed buffs (etc) to successfully attack it. They originally “cotton”, as they are designed to ensure that quickly die. And even if they quickly die – they do their job.
Ranger’s pet – is an appendage. It is hindrance. It requires attention, buffs and calculating talents. Ranger is not designed to ensure that his pet is dead. If both pets die – just replace them does not turn the whole fight. And you, yourself, as good as dead too, then. Since nearly one-third (and this is the only such class) utility skills works only on (or exclusively with) pet.
Ranger and pet have no synergies, such mesmer and his clones have. Against the background of mesmer, ranger’s mechanic looks a tear in the game design.

so what about the other 20%? they can produce normal damage, can support, their pet is alive and it doesnt aggro the whole dungeon. but still they are useless? kinda some contradiction in your post. all i read is hate or frustration. you either get owned by rangers all the time or you cant play one on your own..?
im happy that we run always with the guild, in 1650h playtime i never had to pug once so i never had to meet people like you ingame.
in our guild we run dungeon groups no matter what classes, we dont care, we take whoever got time and we always clear any dungeon without any problems in a more or less short time. even with groups that contain 2-3 rangers, works like a charm.
thats the great thing about gw2 but sadly there are still wannabe elitists like you are which mean they have to clear cof p1 in 10mins, 12mins is unacceptable and a waste of time and its only the rangers fault. but well i guess from your view its not possible to clear cof p1 in 12mins with a ranger in the group, probably not even possible at all, is it?
im so sick of this profession racism even when im not affected.. but already reading about it makes me barf.

I agree with this a lot
I play with my brother a lot (who is a Guardian) and always party with him as well as pugs. It happens maybe less than 1% of the time that the party actually cares too much about dps. One time a person even whispered my bro that I (a ranger) should be kicked and to be replaced with a warrior or guardian, so you know what, we just kicked him. These people are annoying and as long as they are in your party, you won’t do well, knowing that they have a personal grudge against your profession and are secretly watching you carefully and spelling out every single mistake you make.

The other 20 percent, just do not pull the party back. But they can not offer something… extraordinary.
Since you go to the personality, a little bit about myself: I’m not interested for dungeon time-grindind. I play for fun. Go with those who will call. As many hours as you, of course, I have not played with rangers. It’s about 600h on 1st and 100-150 on second. But I have absolutely all classes and know their capabilities. And I write posts on the ranger’s forum not because I am fierce hater of this class or … class racist X) … or set a goal to hurt the feelings of someone like you, but because I’m very disappointed in this class and have the opportunity to give it a fair assessment. I’m not fan and not hater.
By the way, is the fact that the class has even appeared haters, do not tell you that the problems are taking place?
I can responsibly say, that trying to make a class “jack of all trades”, the developers were afraid of it’s hypothetical snazzy, and made the class flawed in all aspects. Class is not terrible and quite playable. But no more. Give something that ranger can do – and I will give you a class that can do it better. Unfortunately this is obvious, and many people know about it. And thanks to the high percentage of curve-hands gamers playing rangers, who think that “if even bots use it…..” this class is not loved by many.
I would like to see the opposite picture.
Speaking of PvP – the average ranger crushed for 8-10 seconds, without having to deal almost any damage. With most of the classes. Doesn’t that grieve thee? Me do.
On wvw our guild raids takes 2-3 ranger in fully thougness\vitality exclusively for healing spring. However, may have to be more, but they simply are not. (Even in that outfit spirits do not last long, by the way. Another sad fact)

I agree with you on many points, Meg. I have a main ranger, level 80, trying to be a DPS spec, wielding longbow(which I was promised would be viable, it is not) and sword/horn.
Calling ranger a ‘jack of all trades’ is an excuse for mediocrity. Rangers are mediocre in every classification at best and useless at worst. My main is a ranger, and in solo open world everything is fine and dandy, but when you do a dungeon or try to WvWvW, everything you can possibly do can and will be done better by someone else. Warriors can out-DPS us and outlast us. Their unkillable banners provide far greater support than our clunky, feeble spirits that die in two hits. Mesmers laugh at our ability to duel, which is virtually non-existant to the average player that doesn’t have the time to spend three hours a day researching an obscure build that will allow you to survive ten seconds longer if applied correctly. Not to mention that thieves can do ridiculous DPS compared to the weak and inefficient DPS rangers drag out with their stupid pets and plain stupid weapon mechanics, I’m looking at you “Range reward” longbow ‘1’.
Meg isn’t a ‘class racist’, from what I’ve seen from him. Stop trying to pin that on him. He’s just been disillusioned, as I have.

you didnt hurt my feelings, im just annoyed by that much QQ about rangers or calling them useless. and thats just coz i cannot agree, from my experience the ranger can be a useful profession as all the other ones.
yesterday we did a fractal, on the endboss the whole group got killed except me, the useless ranger… thanks to my nonexistent ability to tank and my always dead pet that cannot distract mobs, i was able to revive my mates and prevent a groupwipe.
later on i went to wvw with a guardian guildie. we had alot of small scale battles from 2vs1 up to 2vs7. we didnt die once and defeated everything that came along our way. and when im running in wvw it doesnt matter if small scale or big zerg, im kinda almost the primary target coz im shooting rainbow unicorns (that seems to create hate ;) but still i rarely die.
another very useless fact about our stupid neverliving pet (btw my polar bear got 4400 vitality and 1800 toughness) is its revive abilities while downed. if the finisher isnt quick enough then i can heal myself, revive/call the pet, interrupt the finishing move and get up again. or its especially funny when a thief finally gets you down and thinks he can melee you to death with damage instead of finishing, he wont survive for much longer.
so guess your response would be like “yeah thats good for you, you can solo but do not contribute to the group/squad/zerg/server”.
-we can send our pet on the walls/in keeps to kill players and siege with a nice 3000 range.
-my healing spring pumps out regeneration and cures conditions in pulses, also gives vigor for 15 seconds, very appreciated by many players (especially those that specced into boon duration, if im running with my guardian mate we have infinite regeneration up all the time).
-the warhorn gives fury, might, swiftness to your allies, who doesnt like that?
-because everyone thinks rangers suck and are easy targets, i can tank and distract several players up to full groups without dieing, while my allies take the rest out or the ones that try to kill me.
-when an enemy player tries to escape then the ranger is very good at catching him up and stall him, using gs leap and 25% speed buff to catch up and then for example sb 5 from behind which will stun, followed by a sb4 cripple. that holds the escaping player up long enough so the slower ones can catch up for a quick finishing if the ranger cant kill him before he begins to run again (sure thiefs and eles may get away, but not all of them).
this are just some examples, i could go on with more but i think ive made my point.
dont get me wrong now, im not saying the ranger is an uber superduper perfect profession, nono never. the ranger has its issues and could use improvements here and there.
BUT.. its faaaar away from being useless/<insert swear word here>/garbage/broken whatever you wanna call it. i would for example love to see more cc skills and condition removal for the ranger, thats what we are really lacking.
the ranger may not have that extraordinary “wooooow” ability which saves the world, but does it really need to have it? the ranger can be very good in many aspects if built and played right, no matter if it should be dps output or tanking.
and isnt the ranger the profession with the most possibilities to apply conditions?
TLDR: i like to play my ranger, i want fixes and improvements but calling it useless or unplayable is anything else than correct.

The only way to overcome the ranger’s shortcomings is to be innovative and many rangers lack the ability of being good at it. Being a jack of all trades does spread the ability of a ranger too thin, but after much hard work I personally did find ways to succeed in WvW and PvP aside from PvE (which is a no brainer) thanks to that jack of all trades versatility of the ranger.
Although I do admit that other classes do have what I see as better ‘perceived’ DPS and there are shortcomings to being a ranger, that however doesn’t exactly mean that the ranger is just to be disregarded as an unsuccessful profession. For example, instead of trying to out DPS or out survive a warrior, try to be more useful by providing control that a warrior cannot achieve. For example, when I fight warriors as a ranger and when warriors fight warriors is just different. Warriors try to out DPS and outsurvive one another, but as a ranger I can take that warrior’s DPS and keep it under control. Thanks to the versatility of the ranger, you can find ways to outmaneuver other classes and come on top. Although that kind of success comes with way too much practice and experience, so yes IMO ranger is pretty complicated to master and full of shortcomings; but by no means unsuccessful in what they can achieve, either alone or in groups. Besides if you really want to out DPS a warrior, well trait for beast master, use your pet to provide insane dps for you, control the enemy’s action to the best of your ability by providing every mean for you pet to attack them and enjoy the show. Sure that did not seem as straight forward a job as a thief or a warrior need to do to give you their DPS, but hey it works.

oh well… shouldnt even reply to tis but whatever.. is your main really a ranger? did you just lvl him to 80 and then ya had to notice that its useless and went to lvl a new char? or did you actually put time into it?
that directly leads to the next point.. yeah it may take some time to figure out a build that fits you and maybe also some training to play it. but is that really bad?
do you expect the ranger to be uber when you just specc it a bit here and there without any knowledge?
you can gimp every class if you have no clue about what ya are doing.
and does a ranger have to be better than every other class in any aspect? why has a ranger to be a better tank than a tank? why has a ranger to output more dps than the dps class thief?
if a ranger could do what you expect of him, do you know what would happen then? everyone cries OP OP QQ and anet nerfs. cool!
this also leads back to the discussion, a ranger is not an archer/scout, its a beastmaster.
guess thats also the reason why so many are disappointed, they have the wrong expections.
maybe its just not the class you are looking for, doesnt mean its useless, you only personally dislike it. but that also means its exactly the class other players are looking for and therefor like it.
so, just dont play a ranger..?

Pretty simple. Here lies the answer to the subject of this topic. If he is not better than anyone else in any of the aspects, so he preferred replaceable in any situation. If you need a tank – take the tank. If you need a dps – take DPS class. If you need support – take support. Why take half-measure of something. This makes the ranger class exclusively about ranger.
There should be a highlight. Something that makes it stand out above the rest.
