I recently have had a huge rotfl. Roamimg solo, as most of the times on WvW Gunnar’s BL I’ve met a dps tryhard guardian. As usual, owned his spec with my double power bow and proceed fulrther. However, as he was asking for more 1v1( total of , 3, all won) he started to comment about my build. I heard that running power build with bows is op and such things, but there was one thing that made me laugh hard. To clarify – this guy had some legendary, over 10k achi, full best slot items etc, champ paragon, so he wasn’t a big noob. So as I’ve responded that I run my build and immo spider/drakehound. To my big surprise I’ve heard that I “run terrible pets for power build”, I “should change them” and “it’s obvoius”. So my big question? Which pets are “the meta” “obvious” pets for Balanced double bow power Ranger? Because I have no idea. Birds? Kitten what ? ;p
I dont see a problem with spiders for double bow. I mean I am assuming a very large part of your gameplan is to keep distance from your target, and spiders and canines are a big help for that.
Maybe he expects you to run cats for more burst.. but I’d make the same choice you are personally.
The fact that he thinks double ranger bow is OP probably means his opinion isnt worth very much on the matter.. legendaries and achievement points only prove you grind PvE a lot, not your skill level or knowledge of PvP.
Spiders (especially dual immob. with Black Widow and Jungle) with Malicious Training is amazing with the advent of immobilize stacking. But I hate speccing into Marksmanship lol.
I guess it really differs from person to person. Some like Drakes for the Tail Swipe spike with Signet of the Wild, some still like the post-nerf Jaguar’s stalk with Sic’Em, and some still enjoy dual-Ravens for frequent on-demand F2 burst.
I tend to run a fernhound and wolf, that combo has been so much fun now that my beloved fernhound was buffed =D!
As for your pet combo I see absolutely nothing wrong with it, ESPECIALLY since you’re a dual bow ranger.
shrugs when I go power build I normally have my pet around for CC and/or support purposes to even the build out.
I love cc pets a lot more than “obvious meta DPS :P” pets – in every ranger build, at least their cc works better than a cats dps while attacking a moving target

Screw the meta, I run with a drakehound and spider on my berserker ranger as well..
Pets are more than pure DPS machines, they also have some nice cc (you gotta love the spider’s immobilize or the drakehound’s howl).
Spider immobilize→Swap to drakehound→ leap-knock down→ F2 immobilize while they are down. They either die, or are forced to pop their cooldowns. I love it!

Never saw a Class that nerf the dmg 50%
Little hint: I’ve found out that’s it way easier to manage important cooldowns of these pets by simply running with them on passive. I never turn aggressive mode on unless I do PvE. By keeping your pet always at bay and at your command, you can manage Web (one of the first attack, possibly 1-2 sec after Poison split or right after start, you can very often force Web at start by immobilizing in the beginning with Paralyzing Venom, spider usually follows it by Web). It applies to Drakehound too, even easier (KD right after attack command, 1-2 sec and followed by crippling attack).
Generally I’ve found out that pets are more responsive and “intelligent” when kept on passive and moving only on order.
Spiders are in my opinion THE best pets you can have. Alright, I’m biased, but their ability to lock opponents down is AMAZING . Here is a fight I had with a warrior, he was a pretty rubbish one (bless him) however it locked him down for ages. I did cheat a bit, started with entangle which he stood in…., but the spiders did most of the work. He was stuck there for around 20 seconds first time then another 7 after I re-immobilized him and swapped pets.
Wolf is good for aoe fear, handy in PvE if you need to work a quick res or move a foe.

The worst of those nerfs – particularly the cat and bird nerfs – were to prevent bunker rangers from still having high spike damage (via the pet). The effect on sustained DPS was pretty small (other than armored fish which used to out-DPS sharks), and an argument for nerfing them could be made.
About the only change in that list I vehemently disagree with is the nerf to devourers. They used to be about equal to spiders so you could use either depending on if you wanted immobilizes or bleeds. Now they’re clearly inferior, and everyone runs spiders all the time. Way to encourage build diversity.
I’ll echo every single person in this thread with saying you’re using the “right” pets for any sort of PvP.
I prefer drakehound and wolf over the spider, since it has more damage but a similar amount of CC, and the fear is ‘harder’ CC. I wait for a dog KD, then KD on the bow, straight in to the wolf fear. The cripple on two dogs doesn’t hurt either.
im a still stuck on the OP roaming and winning regularly as a double bow power spec.
im having a hard time absorbing that as something truthful.
