Q:

The patch notes stated they buffed the proc rate on spirits, but did they change the internal cool downs on the procs at all? I think I remember reading here that some had about a 10sec internal cool down.

Edit: Nevermind checked in game, there is a 10 second cool down on all of the procs. What is the point of having a 50% chance to proc if it can only happen every 10 seconds?

Yeah I think the proc rate enhancement is kind of redundant, as most professions tend to have fairly quick attack speeds. You’ll have attacked around 10-15 times in that 10 second cooldown, the proc rate didn’t really need to be changed. It kind of feels like a fake buff…

Indeed, this patch, like the last one, is just an exercise in trolling the playerbase into giving up and playing a warrior like were supose to.

No more Gemstore purchases from this sucker.

I didn’t even need to test them to find this out. You can tell just by knowing what they were and what they are now that the buff was pointless.

Unless they make spirits tanky or completely change the way they support players, they will never be good.

I was very optimistic about the promised buffs to spirits. When I started my ranger, I had planned on running a spirit support build, so I was excited when I thought that might be possible.

But alas, the spirit “buff” turned out to be nothing. Increasing the proc rate while still leaving a secret cooldown on the procs, plus leaving them just as fragile as ever? They still remain some of the worst utilities out there (outside of ones that are bugged or work incorrectly).

How do you test for the internal CDs? I would like to do this as well, could you give me a methodology please?

General method for testing things: eliminate external variables (remove all other sources of whatever your testing), make sure your gear doesn’t have anything that might interfere, remove traits if applicable, and so on.

Specific method: take the Sun Spirit, for instance. Summon it and start auto-attacking golems at the DPS trials area. Start your timer when the first instance of the proc (in this case, burning) shows up. From now on, write down as precisely as possible the time when the next proc occurs.

The list will look something like this:

1. burning proc – 0 sec
2. burning proc – 9,5 sec
3. burning proc – 19,5 sec
4. burning proc – 21 sec
5. burning proc – 33 sec
etc.

The variance in times can be attributed to the “chance on hit” attribute, lag, whatever else may influence the results. You’ll get a rough idea of what the ICD is, if any.

Huh… Druzlla hasn’t chimed in to spout his mouth off about how wrong we all are and how spirits and greatsword are great. I’m guessing the math above scared him away.

I’m very frustrated by the mechanic of a proc-on-proc system for Spirits. Why this redundancy?!

Best answer I can give is that it makes the procs slightly more reliable.

It’s still terrible, and it makes the +15% proc chance trait worse, but it’s technically still a buff…

Equip a spirit, go to the training dummies in Lion’s Arch. Attack them. This will trigger the procs, and as you attack rather fast, you will see the procs are easy to get off consistently, but do indeed have a ten second gap. Mouse over the tooltip for a spirit and it states Effect Recharge: 10 seconds. That’s the cooldown. Tooltips have been wrong for me before for several classes, but this one seems right.

I get a blanced bow from the weapon vendor in HOTM – fixed damage

Strip my gear – minimize damage – this results in only needing to switch targets once during the test minimizing non attack time.

I go to the large field of heavy golems not the three sets.

I unspec all traits except the spirit line.

I start shooting the golem then activate the single spirit I am testing(autoattack keeps me firing continuosly)

I count procs watch for stacking for the entire 65 second window I have a chance to proc the spirits effect. You can stopwatch from proc occuring (I just count one thousand 1 -2 etc at a regular pace in my head)

Using the same spirit I then run a set at 50%.

Because you are using a balanced bow that hits for exactly the same amount every time testing the frost spirit 10% damage is simply a matter of watching the combat log.

find your base damage with no spirit. Activate the spirit watch the damage strings and look for a 10% increase in your base damage. relatively quickly you will observe you are getting +10% damage hits in sequence not seperated by any internal CD gap.
