What is the overall developmental theme or direction of the Ranger? And it's place in GW2.

Long title, but I am sure I am not the only person that would like to know what kind of overall theme is going into the design of the ranger class and in what direction is the profession heading?
I also bring this up because it seems some of the aspect of the profession seem out of sort with other aspect or with the basics of the game.
Example Guild Wars 2 seem to be designed around dynamic encounters and high movement combat. Some of the Ranger is designed to benefit from a static/stationary/sniper style of play. The trait Steady Focus (discourages (or penalizes) dodging) and the pets not being able to attack moving targets (is this intentional or just an oversight?)
Guild Wars 2 in the form of sPvP is an e-sport, but the Ranger was design to have a profession mechanic that is the major focus of the profession performance, but that aspect uses AI function. This feel that the Ranger is now painted in the corner so to speak. If the pet function at the level it was designed to do then the Ranger can be criticized as a “easy-mode” profession or that the pet does all the work.

Hi. I too would like very much to hear from a developer about the direction they are aiming for the Ranger. I hope it involves being the roamer the Ranger is supposed to be with the option for support of a large party. I agree that the ranger gets stuck into a corner and it is extremely hard to balance such a would-be-powerful mechanic but I also believe that at the same time until the mechanic is made to not be completely useless it is impossible to judge and therefore balance it. Thus, the course of action at this moment is still the same; fix pet responsiveness and rooting. The Ranger could have the best skills in the game (which is by far from true) but if the mechanic remains unviable.. the class as a whole will remain unviable.

I just hope the theme for Ranger isn’t turret as that seems to counterproductive in the current game’s overarching play style.

JonPeters already mentioned he’s not gonna spoil any details that’s going to mention the changes towards the Ranger profession.
But I really would like to know what theyre doing. We only deserve as much considering there was no communication from them for weeks.

10 day and we will know, doubt they will say anything, i don’t want to be pessimistic but i don’t expect any significant change, probably it wont ever be the ranged dps i dreamed about, ( sniper dude similar to the hawkeye from lineage2)

I not sure that the theme being discuss would spoil anything at all. I was thinking more along the line of the developers mention that the theme or feel for Necromancer was an attrition profession.
Might be a good time for a ‘What ranger means to you?’ thread to see what kind of ideas are floating around.

It would be great to have a simple explanation of the philosophy behind the ranger profession, and in what direction they want to take it as they refine and balance and fix bugs. With some other professions, I had a fairly easy time recognizing the thrust of the design just by playing, but ranger is somewhat non-intuitive in that regard. ArenaNet, how do you see the ranger profession, and what did you intend it to be?
It would probably significantly improve the quality of feedback, suggestions, and discussion if we had some idea of the framework and direction we’re working towards.

Very intersting thread.But the silences from Devs says that theres no actual picture yet.
We need first to be fixed at Nov 15 patch.Then determine the course of pets (they are not i such a bad state imo but surely they are annoying when a thief is kittening me and the pet stands right next to me almost feeling that its rolling on floor laughing)

Hopefully they won’t hide behind the blanket statement of ‘Pet class’ as it none of the other profession seem to be so rooted into their class mechanic. I would rather see the pet mechanic aid the ranger in fulfilling the place rangers fills in the game instead of being the beginning and end of the design/theme/what-have-you.

I think I know what it is now. Ranger is the ‘at least that isn’t me’ profession they just skipped most of the reduction of power after release in favor of the massive drop in power during the beta weekends.
Either that or we are the ‘oops this is too easy to bot with’ profession.
Maybe we are being a little negative on the forums as a whole, they are taking baby steps… more like geriatric pushed the walker away steps.
