axe offhand is a good choice, u just need to understand the weapon.
Its good for Damage and for control.
Whirling Defense is a DEFENSIVE skill. “Whaaaat? NOOOO!?!” U think, but its true. So arguing about more dmg is not logic. The dmg is enough. Ofcourse, make it not rooting would a great buff to it, but to buff other aspects make no sense. U shouldnt use WD primarly to do dmg, use it smart against projectiles from far away foes. I saw countless rangers who wanted to start a fight with PBS and shot themselfes from the cliff. Amazingly funny in Khylo midfight. Most people dont even know that it reflects, mostly Hambows and thiefes AND RANGER. u can instantly say if a ranger knows what he does, when he stops pewpewing in ur WD. When not he s just a rapid fire shooter
And Path of scars is now a great skill, the new movement speed makes it really easy to hit people, its a good finishing move because it has such a high burst potential.
IMO ranger who know how to play dont need to trait offhand training because axe can stand for his own.

Quick question, wasnt able to read all comments here but maybe was already answered.

If Dagger Storm (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Dagger_Storm) is used and you counter with Whirling Defense, what would the outcome be?

Success is my only option, failure is not.

The no.4 sucks as well. It’s pretty sad, considering I absolutely love both abilities, but only purely because of their animations.

Path of Scars doesn’t suck at all. You can pull off some great combos with the pull, the damage is good and it piercies.

Wouldn’t mind Whirling Defense getting some love, tho. Even the baseline radius of the skill is underwhelming.

You do realize you’re replying to a 2yo post right XD ?

That’s the sad part about all this — 2 years and there are basic weapon skills that are still near-universally regarded as terrible. The balancing in this game is truly pathetic.

downed state is bad for PVP

I think the biggest question is, does this skill still reflect siege weapons?

Whirling defense is a great skill. Off-hand axe has both a defensive skill and an offensive skill. This skill not only reflect but deals damage as well as gives retaliation and vulnerability. Only a few weapon skill can reflect without being traited. Based on the skill as a whole whirling defense is imo the best weapon reflect skill in the game.

When comparing skill there are lots of thing to consider. First is it a weapon skill or a utility skill or even an elite. I don’t see the logic of trying to compare a weapon skill with an elite (the elite should always be better but then you pay for it with a long recharge.)

We may complain about certain aspect of the game, but I believe Anet is doing a great job. Certain things when combined with other thing could be tweaked a bit more. Nothing is perfect but GW2 is a great game. When raising issue open your view just a bit more.

In order to properly understand the big picture,
everyone should fear becoming mentally clouded and obsessed with one small section of truth.

It simply needs a shorter duration and shorter cooldown. Then we can skillfully use it without it putting us in too much risk. Simple fix really

The question i asked myself is, can u build a setup around axe offhands abilty to stack vulnerability very fast, if u use it with longbow and items of evry sort, which prolong condition duration on the target.
i mean, 25stacks of vulnerability isnt that bad, but again, is it viable under usual aspects of the game (and i am sure were not talking about questing/lvling or worldboss events here)?

Ive been using longbow/Sw-Axe build. (62042) zealots or assassins. REALLY good for might stacking a pet and yourself. Strength sigils on both weapons. Barrage rapid fire on the longbow then switch to SW/Axe then WD+Path of scars. Your almost guaranteed to have 25 stacks of might on the pet and atleast 12 on yourself. Its pretty kitten awesome.

Would work really well on downed players in PvP with the cleave and reflection, if it did a bit more damage. For a 5 second channel the dps is quite low.

Now it only reflects what’s in front of you (90 degrees) and destroys everything to the sides and behind you, right?

Reflects in all directions. Still could use a bit of love.
