Why does Instinctual Bond still exist?
At least, it isn’t last refuge.

Instinctual Bond: When you are downed, your pet gains quickness.
After all the changes being made prior to HoT, I’m confused as to why this trait (and others as bad as it) still exist and are considered viable by the devs. I think a lot of the changes are good so far, but this in particular is just confusing. Has anybody ever actually utilized this trait effectively on a consistent basis?
I actually have.
… In PvP, constantly. I used to play Bark Skin build (currently under 25% health).
Even if I began to lose I turned the table upside down. When I saw I am about to go down – I could either get an almost instant fear for bonus interrupt which bought just enough time for my team to ress me up…
… Or in duel scenario I was able to blow 4K damage in 1,5 seconds just from my pet alone (Enlargement plus Marsh Drake). I usually downed my target, and there’s no discussion that Rangers are currently the strongest downed skirmishers.
They should switch it with Rendering Attacks. Then all the Minor traits are direct pet buffs and you make Instinctual Bond an Adept choice.

Should it perhaps be “When you are downed, your pet is healed and it’s skills are reset” (I.e. taken off cooldown)

Might as well delete it if they do that.

I kind of disagree. If they switch it, it allows it to be merged with another trait, or buffed so that it can actually be relevant.
Combine this trait with Circle of Life…

I guess you haven’t run power necro with traited downed state yet.

Or a thief with back fighting. We DO have more sustain with downed fighting due to Lick Wounds
I was wondering why not get rid of it and replace it with the new Nature’s Wrath so that the pet stat bonus trait is actually in the BM line…
Yes, well that would also be good.

This is what exactly my way of thinking.

I have. Just as I was able to beat them anytime when we both got downed. Plenty of times where I got downed while he still had 25% of his death shroud.
I didn’t say anything about the damage. I was talking about fighting possibilities. Ranger’s interrupt is AoE, can have 2 interrupts thanks to the pet (even 3 if you can manage), the highest sustain in downed state, and the damage is not that bad.
Now the Necro is not even close to being a threat to this arzenal.

With deaths embrace and chill of death traited I have taken players from 100% health to the downed state.
I once wiped several players by dropping my wells on point right before going down.
In a downed state fight vs. a ranger all a necro has to do is use the fear to interrupt the pet and drop the poison field on the ranger, the life steal with the traited extra damage will do the rest.
I’m not saying ranger’s downed state isn’t strong, it’s great in certain situations. It’s down right OP underwater. But in different situations other downed states are better. An easy example is ele’s fighting in front of a tower door in WvW.

I’m aware, that’s why I said that Ranger is the best fighter, since in your downed state you still deal 30% of your normal damage in addition to the standards of a downed state.
With traits, this damage can go up into 56,5% of your normal DPS (quickness + Enlargement) plus your own in downed state.
I didn’t say it has the highest survival rate. Just that it has the best fighting possibilities. Damage, sustain and CC wise.
At least, it isn’t last refuge.
/thread.
Last refuge is 10 times better than instinctual bond.
At least it saves you 10 times more than it kills you.
Can’t tell you how many times thief escape from my burst because of this trait, even though they’re bad and didn’t use their active defense to avoid the damage at all.
It probably still exists because they are still working on the Specializations ;-)
Try your best to not make mistakes, but, when you do make mistakes, learn from them.

Last refuge can kill you. Already that is bad design for a minor trait.
Instinctual Bond is just kinda useless, but it’s never detrimental. It just doesn’t have any significant effect on the game.
I’d take instinctual bond any day over a trait, which can stop you from utilizing the trait line’s main mechanic.
The mob has spoken and the turrets shall be burnt at the stake.
One doesn’t help you nor hurt you.
The other can either save you or get you killed.
Very simple.

I’d rather fight thieves with no Last Refuge too, so I’m actually supporting you. Many thieves think they survived from my burst with their own skills, but in fact many times it’s Last Refuge that saved them and they don’t recognized it. Especially when they got CCed and immob, then last refuge kicks in and instantly remove their immob so they can dodge from my RF right after I CCed them and get away with SR afterword.
Hope there’s no passive “oh-kitten” bottom for you guys. Yes, as ranger I’d switch instinctual bond over Last refuge any days.
Please Anet! Consider this change!

the ranger last refuge equivalent would either make you invulnerable to damage for 3 seconds or kill your pet, when your health drops below 25%, depending on some wonky timing issues with your attacks and projectiles in the air.
Can’t have last refuge on a class, which actually isn’t affected negatively by it, can we?
Ironically, Last Refuge is only crap on thief.

Not true!
I often couldn’t get into stealth through LB3 because of reveal (Got it from other source of invisibility) So it affects us too!
It could potentially kill me too yknow
Btw, hide in plain sight is basically the equivalent of last refuge. It procs without my own will too when I’m CCed, but I find it vastly useful.

You know, most of the time, last refuge isn’t all that bad. It’s just that it procced too often just as my character was swinging a cloak and dagger at the opponent.
It’s just frustrating, when you expect to be stealthed and instead get revealed.
Now people say be more skilled, expect it to proc, play around it. Maybe I could, if it didn’t have that icd. It procs once, you disengage, the rest of the roaming group is still in the fight, so you pop the heal skill and jump in again.
Now when is it up again? If you get pressed hard in a prolonged fight, you have no means to know, whether it will pop and save you or whether you have to use CnD.
It also reveals your position, when it pops while you already are in stealth.
As a ranger trait, it sounds amazing, but the thief is too reliant on timing his stealth and revealed, so some random factors from his own traits will really screw him over.
The mob has spoken and the turrets shall be burnt at the stake.
You realize you’re talking on the Ranger forums about having to deal with cooldowns you can’t see, right? :-p
Have you seen:
- Ranger pets?
- Ranger passive condition removal (Empathic and SoR)
- Our plethora of traits with their ICDs?
Just saying :-)
