Here is a pretty standard longbow/greatsword build.
It is possible to use this build in duels, but you have to be really good at playing with this weaponset. It does take some practice but it’s really fun.
Only thing power ranger really suffers from currently are good thieves. You can still beat average thieves, but you probably won’t if they are really experienced. You will be vulnerable to condi specs also since you don’t have the precious Empathic Bond, so make sure to kite them well with the longbow and don’t let them overload you with conditions.
Your rotation with this build is to use your auto attack “Long Ranger Shot” with your longbow whenever you can. “Rapid Fire” is good at tracking thieves, so use it when they are about to stealth. “Hunter’s Shot” is really good to position yourself with stealth. “Point Blank Shot” is also extremely useful when you want to knockback someone when they are trying to get close to you. When in a duel, it can be hard to land your “Barrage” skill but its doable if you use the CC from your pets and the stealth from the longbow. Staying in the same area as your casted barrage will make you gain distance from your enemy, since they probably don’t want to get hit by it including with the cripple it gives.
For greatsword, use it when you are in need of being more defensive. Counterattack is very useful to block incoming hits and the knockback if the enemy hits you in melee. You can also wait until the last second of the animation to hit the button again to land the Crippling Throw, which deals some decent damage and makes it easier to use your Hilt Bash on greatsword. A cool thing with Counterattack is you don’t need to face your enemy when you are going to throw your greatsword at them, so it’s nice when you want to take them by surprise. Moment of Clarity trait is very strong if you can land your stun and land your Maul skill. When you are done using your skills on greatsword, just switch for longbow next.
To be good at ranger overall you also have to learn how to control your pet well. Make sure to make good use of those 2s knockdowns from your dogs. What I really like about dogs is how they still make the howling sounds when you cast your F2 and cancel it using F3, making enemies waste their dodge roll.
For your utility skills,
-Protect Me: Use it when you know you are about to get bursted. Make sure your pet still has a good amount of HP left as this will make him take the damage for you in the next 6s.
-Lightning Reflexes: This skill is very nice for the breakstun and the amount of vigor it gives to you. Also removes Immob.
-Signet of Renewal: Use this when you have alot of conditions on you, since it’s your only condi cleanse, unless you play with Healing Spring. Don’t make the mistake most rangers do too, which is using the signet when the ranger pet is too far. SoR only has a 600 radius. Also you probably will want to swap pets after you used this.
