Hey, so I’ve played a Guardian for over 1000 hours, and while I’m not bored, I’ve made quite a few alts, having a warrior, engineer, and now thief at 80 as well. Since I’m mainly focused on WvW with the occasional dungeons and some PvE, I decided to really learn how to play my thief. I’ve seen a lot of builds in action, getting kitten d by some, and demolishing others. As for myself, I’ve always hated the perma stealth thief builds, both to play and to use. It just seems pretty gimicky, albeit, having 6K crits with BS without even having my thief fully geared is entertaining. So really, for WvW I’ve been using either 0/20/30/20 or 0/30/30/10, both are fun, but both have used D/P and D/D. Seeing as how Thieves are apparently getting “nerfed”, is there a point to still learn the class, or should I just go ahead and work on my mesmer?

I want to stick with the thief, which is turning out to be more fun than I thought ( I’ve always hated stealthy rogue classes, preferring the tanks). Yet, I want to use my Thief in wvw and in dungeons, but after looking at the possible changes on the 10th, and hearing actual thieves saying they’re retiring because “D/D is dead”, what do? I know it’s long, but I hope what I’m asking is at least semi clear XD

If all else fails at least you can run around wvw tagging things with Shortbow.

You may play with your other characters for 4-6 month, just look at necros, rangers, eles, mesmers, warriors. They were once really bad. then got buffed to oblivion and then brought down a bit to match other strong professions, now it is thieves time to bit the dust and be terrible but in 4-6 month they will probably be op as hell for 1-2 month then brought back down, hopefully in par with other strong professions.

Since I exclusively play thief, I’ll stick to it and drag my sorry behind though those 4-6 month of being stomped in the face…

Play the thief!

You already having fun, and can keep at it for an extra month. Just dont over rely on the stuff getting a huge nerf like the “permastealth”. By the time the nerf hits, you will already be an awesome thief that can work around the changes.

Worst case scenario, you got to see the thief when he was great before he becomes extinct. Then go play mesmer, at least you got an extra month of fun out of GW2.

I have allways hated perma stealth, so i picked d/p combined with 30SA as my build. Makes sense.

Playing D/P doesn’t necessarily mean he’s playing as a permastealth thief. The build doesn’t need long durations of stealth to make it viable. The fact that its on-demand stealth with a shadowstep, daze and blind field that has no cooldown makes it pretty powerful with or without stealth stacking.

D/P is the remaining viable weapon set after the 10th of December. It’s excruciatingly boring and you won’t kill anyone that is at least half decent, but the blind spam does prevent your own death. At best, the thief profession becomes an annoying troll profession; I’m either quitting (most likely) or re-rolling to a Mesmer or Necromancer (less likely).

People retire from thief mainly because attacking skilled players on any class feels like fighting mobs that are 5+ levels higher than you, they can do much more harm to you than you can do to them and they do it without really performing any extraordinarily skilled, tactical or smart actions. And everything a thief can do, all other classes can do better, we just have some extra stealth uptime and stealth traits and a bit more dodge than rangers, that’s pretty much all. And what’s being done about all this is that thieves receive nerfs and other classes buffs, it’s simply tiresome, without anything new, and build variety is increased by nerfing the viable builds to oblivion so people would take some of the more useless traits to stay top notch in the means of thievery.

In PvP, Dagger as a mainhand is less affected by this upcoming patch, you spend a lot of time dodging and chasing for backstabs which imo makes the +33% ini regen make up for the opportunist nerf, although calculations for steady dps says otherwise. Infusion of shadows will however make a hit on ini regen while in stealth with things like Shadow Refuge, CnD > HiS etc. D/P wont ofc have permastealth, but will still be strong since permastealth wasn’kittens true strength, permastealth was just something passive that came with the set that had it’s benefits as well, thieves will still however be able to escape just as good.

Opportunist makes a hard hit on P/P and S/P, and Sword mainhand in general could never affort to be locked down, so the removal of the stun escape + the cast time will make it really weak and not counter any well-played classes anymore.

The vigor nerfs, affected all builds which utilizes it.

Overlooking everything, our troll condition set P/D is getting a slight buff. And that’s what I’ll adapt to now, since PvP in this game is starting to suck and gets based around condition spam and no brain play.

D/D is still quite playable as well.

Oh cmon, we all know how it is. And if you chose 30 in SA, you are playing (or trying to) perma stealth build.

At least you have a Guardian at 80. When Dec. 10th comes you’ll easily be able to jump on him/her and kick butt.

Or, come join the hundreds of us leaving the game due to this “balancing” change. (all my friends quit after reading these “balance” notes)

Well to hate using it, I’d have to actually use it first. No sense in saying I don’t like something I haven’t tried before. To be fair, the wording is off, though, even if you did edit a big part of the post that would make it easier to understand. 0/20/30/20/0 isn’t perma stealth only, but it gives some of the most survival I’ve seen. I’ve been actively learning D/D and S/D since hitting 80.

Thieve are really interesting to play, and you can stick to it for WvW, but please, dont dungeon run with the thief, the better thieve in dungeon dont die but neither they bring any special to the team, even the stealth mecanic to pass mobs in speed runs can be done with a engie very well. Thieves is rigth now the less usseful profession for dungeons, is not useless in good hands, but either is never the first choice to a good dungeon group.

….what are you high? engie can’t have long aoe stealth..show me a engi stealth skip the asura fotm then talk..
my thief can AA up to 6k and its not even best geared, its aoe, and it never dies because of the evade it has…also, my thief can engage so fast to quick burst kill to save teamates..from a far far away distance..and it’s beast on shaman boss..

Thief isn’t my only 80 – so I’ll simply retire her until Anet wakes up and realizes what’s actually going on.

Until then, I have an 80 Mesmer and nearly an 80 Necro too to play around with in PvP.

Lear to read, i never say engie haved longer, just that it have a good enough quantity whith the smock bomb and all treir blast finisher. 2º, stealth is not a need, just a plus, and 3r, i prefer 1 warrior burst damage that 2 or even 3 thieve, in any dungeon. Is not fault of the players neither, is just the actual meta of the game.

To play against the thief is very annoying, like many others I just thought the thief had some OP skills.
To play as a thief I find harder than other professions but also very fun if you pull it off.

I play d/d, and honestly don’t care to much about the upcoming changes (the nerf to opportunist is odd considering how squishy a thief is), but it shouldn’t impact my play much.

I’ve 1v1’d alot and do pretty well considering I didn’t start my thief that long ago. I escape from stuff (zergs, groups) I would never get away from on any other class.

Most of the thieves crying are the d/p stealth spam ones, which I thought was pretty lame tbh. Getting a c+d off someone whilst they are still in stealth is glorious though.

But if you want easy mode mesmer is better for you. Amazing survivability matched with excellent damage and CC. ( yet somehow on the high hitpoint table…).
