For us mortals, however, protection means that your enemy has to do 33% more damage to kill you, which is easily the difference between whether you survive to use your heal when it comes off cooldown or whether you can live until you have the endurance to dodge that next shatter from the mesmer or whether that next backstab will drop you, etc.

Actually, Protection means you have to do 50% more damage to kill someone. So it’s equivalent to 50% more effective HP.

Can you explain the math on that? I don’t follow.

He’s right in some aspects.

Protection is 1/3 damage reduction, that means that you deal 2/3 of the damage. If you consider 2/3 of your damage as base, without protection you deal 2/3 + 1/3 damage, and 1/3 damage is actually 50% of 2/3.
It is quite of a trick to say things, but it is mathematically correct.

if they gonna nerf this flanking steal boon skill… why dnt they just delete thief class in game.. its probably a useless class except the D/P but still not that great in team clash spvp.. d/p is just good solo roamer in WvW. or maybe they shud change the thief class to Lone Wolf Class (GTFO thief we don’t need u in team!)

right in a way wrong in a way…actually…this is some hillbilly math. if you do 50 % more of what you are dealing…. well lets say the first hit is 90…..now ur doing 60….50% more dmg is 90 right? but dealing 50% more dmg still gets 33% taken off due to protection…so you now still only doing 80 dmg instead of the full 90. you WANT to be dealing a TOTAL of 33% more which is .66x=90 or 90/.66 = 135 and 135-90 =45 and 45/90 = .5 and hence is where he got his 50% more TOTAL dmg.
