Best idea ever. I love staffs and spears.

SO you are saying that all weapons should be available to all classes in this game? The type of staff you are talking about and the type of staff skills used in GW2 are on polar opposite ends of the spectrum lore wise and from a gaming practicality stand point…There are reasons that they limited the weapons available to certain classes and from a game mode perspective you are essentially asking for an entirely new weapon because staves are “Magical weapons” in this game and you are asking for more of a melee time option here… You aren’t comparing oranges to apples you are asking oranges to turn into apples.

How is this any different from the Mesmer using a Greatsword (predominantly melee weapon) as a magic focus from 1200 range?

Just because staff is ranged magic for other professions doesn’t mean it can’t be martial melee weapons for other professions.

I like it but add a new type of Staff to the game or it will look kinda stupid.

I was thinking this at first, but the more I think about it the more I don’t think it’s necessary. They could just introduce some new more martial looking skins and it wouldn’t really be a big deal. I could see someone fighting martially with the skins already in the game.

Its the animations, a thief with a staff would look like hes holding it ready to bash your face in.

Bah, just leave them in their wet dreams, the whole thing is just laughable at best.

About as plausible as using a greatsword like a laser cannon, how absurd! Haha.

It’s particularly dumb because it’s actually a sensible enough thing that it could really come to fruition one day, kind of like Blood Elf Warriors – I bet he laughed at people requesting that too.

I’ve got to agree with people saying martial staff would fit the theme of thieves. Martial staves are very acrobatic weapons, and we’re one of the most acrobatic professions. I could easily see some for of martial staff use as the thief’s “melee AoE and survival” option. Think about something with the kind of utility you get from a shortbow, but that’s actually effective at keeping you alive in melee range. A solid damage auto (I do like the idea of making it a chain with an auto-evade at the end), a solid AoE DPS #2, and three other skills for mobility, evasion, and team utility respectively.

I could easily see them using the current head-heavy staff models if the fighting style was more in line with a weighted staff than the balanced hand approach of the quarterstaff.

I hope you didn’t lose all your money then. Besides, the day that kind of stuff happens, engineers will also be wielding martial staves and necromancers will use rifles and turrets. After all, it would be lame that only one class gets slaughtered, people could be jealous!

I can’t even follow the train of logic in this post. No surprise there.

This is sort of what I was thinking as well.

  1. chain similiar to Ranger GS (attack, attack, evade/attack)
  2. 300-ish range leap with some short evade frames + sweep for medium damage in pbAoE
  3. channeled block + flurry of attacks, similiar to Spear #3
  4. evasive vault backwards (unsure of any secondary effect)
  5. overhead slam with shadow-esque trail following it, dazing the opponent it hits for 1/4s or 1/2s and creating a short, small Dark Field (#2 through this field would Blind as a Leap Finisher and teammates shooting through it would be stealing life).

Since Refuge and a bunch of Necro wells are the only skills that can create a Dark Field, that might be a little overkill (perhaps if you used DS to whirl through it along with SoM equipped, which would no doubt cause some QQ somewhere despite Leeching Bolts not being that great at all), so perhaps another effect would be better. However, to bring a teamplay aspect, some sort of helpful combo field should be created. Off-hand Pistol has Smoke covered, so something else should liven it up.

Also MrForz, I’m struggling to find the point you’re trying to make. o_O

why would i wanna knock my target and myself back?
makes no sense as an autoattack skill since its gonna be unreliable and will often ruin your game.

nevertheless, i support a melee-staff thief, with cone and 360 attacks.

one skill could be an aoe knockdown. as as leg sweep.
another could be an aoe that reflects attacks. twirling it around.
another one could be the one you have for autoattack, just not on autoattack.

I’ll make it simple: First, you’re in the wrong game, and second, you’re taking the Thief class for what it actually isn’t. Of course, strong desires will often override any sense of rationality, I suppose I’m done here.

I, for one, am all in. A staff as a martial staff sounds fantastic.

What i think a staff should enable thieves to do:
A 360 Move
A stunning move
A (outside melee) range move (not necessarily a gap closer)
A defensive/parry move
Things that do come into mind:
Overhead skull smacking
Leg sweeping 360
Pole vault gap closer
