Out of range steal
Has happened to me a few times lately as well. Don’t know if the patch somehow messed it up, but it definitely needs fixing. Steal shouldn’t just randomly go on cooldown when you’re definitely in the 900 range. Why does it even the trigger the full cooldown, when it normally just sets the skill unusable for 4 seconds?

Is a bug, I autoattacked a mob with sword and still couldn’t steal to him. I am wandering if the patch changed Line of Sight ruling and it jerked the steal up? (Yes, there was a door in my way…hush up….)
I had not noticed this. If I use steal and it immediately goes into cooldown, I just assume I must’ve used the stolen skill right away by accident. Do you still shadowstep to your target?

Yeah this happened to me a few times yesterday in WvW. Even on sentries, I will be really close to them, it will say “Out of Range”, it will trigger the FULL COOLDOWN, yet I miss the steal and get no stolen item.
Is this just happening to me is it a legit game bug , i’d literally be in people’s face yet when i try to steal to them i get the "out of range " my steal goes on CD.
This happen when there’s too much clutter that your client is lagging. You can see your character in range, but because of the lag, the server never gets your updated position and returns “out of range”.
This client-server miscommunication happen a lot in different levels in terms of distance. The one thing that annoys me the most is when it happen during a jumping puzzle where I died because the server believe that I didn’t made the jump and I fell when I can see clearly that I made it on to the platform.

Intersting…. maybe someone can tell me. What if people that has traits in trickery… like thrill of the crime. I know for sure that even if you dont have anything target and use steal… you will still get all your boon and tricker steal cool down. So.. in this case. It doesnt really matter if it really out of rang or bug? If you still get the full duration on steal? Thanks…
On other note, ArenaNet did a bug fix on Steal on June 7, yet I can’t seem to find it from the forum and wiki.
However, Google has portion of the release note;

Perhaps the “fix” created a new bug concerning Steal?

Before July patch, the steal would instantly activate and give you the stolen item as well as apply the mug and other trait effects without checking the line of sight. Specifically how thieves could steal an item someone who’s on another ledge, say, inside the obsidian sanctum jumping platforms. You used to get the stolen item as well as all the boons and they would get dazed even though your character doesn’t Shadowstep over (since it can’t due to there being no viable path).
With the July patch where they tried to fix that, they added a new check which takes a quarter of a second to calculate if the thief’s body can actually travel there before allowing the steal to land. This is creating lots of problems. Mug is now delayed and will reveal people who use the hidden thief trait (gain stealth when you steal), it also isn’t 100% instant now and will sometimes randomly say obstructed or out of range.
I’ve been getting this too, well inside steal range too. Sometimes I shadowstep to the enemy but it says “out of range” and nothing is stolen, full cooldown. Some times I just shadowstep in place and it says “out of range” with full cooldown; some times I shadowstep to the enemy, and then shadowstep back a bit (I’m guessing that is where the game thought I was obstructed or something) and it says “out of range”, full cooldown. Maybe anet wanted Steal to be as dependable as Scorpion Wire.

i had this problem lastnight it happened to me in ebg but i think it was the terrain couldent steal or sword 2 to my target. the image below i have circled the area were i was not able to do steal or shadow step
