Please get a calculator. The 22,224 damage is only up to lightning strike…..also there is something called a down state in this game. Guess you both forgot.

Here’s a few suggestions from an ex-Thief turned Engineer:

1. Swap one of those Elixirs out for a toolkit so you can prybar to the face.

2. Learn to use Elixir S. It’s on your utility bar for more than just decoration.

3. Get a Shield and learn how to use #4 and #5

4. 22k Health is low for a WvW engineer.

5. Get more Pvt.

6. Refer to number 5

loeffingl, After reading your comment I looked at the attack order and used a calculator.
He was alive until Wild Strike, which is why Lotus strike isn’t listed, it got the invulnerable message and didnt connect for damage, which means the engineer would of been alive for 3 seconds after he initially got hit. Which is plenty of time to avoid getting killed if you have any idea what you’re doing, he didnt even use his heal, or dodge roll at all after bask venom wore if it was even used. (Bask venom lasts 1.5 seconds) So, even if you didnt have a stun breaker, you were alive and doing nothing to prevent damage at all after bask venom wore, if is was even used. So ya, L2P, nothing to see here, guy who builds for all damage died to a guy who builds for all damage in 3 seconds.

Oh, the other thing this shows, as he was able to mug/cnd/backstab you, is that he walked up behind you outside of stealth. So if you had any situational awareness, or bothered to ever like, look behind you, youd have seen him coming.

How did I magically get more health than the 22,000 I had? Makes no sense. Btw, thats not low health for an engineer. Nice try though. He used 3 moves. Thats it.

Steal 2,545 damage
Cnd 6,846 damage
Backstab 10,954 damage
Lightning Strike(im assuming this was from a sigil/steal idk no one else was around) 1,879

TOTAL = 22,224 damage.

22k is low health for an engineer.

My engineer has 28k health in full Pvt
I use sigils of accuracy and perception to bring my critical chance up above 30%
I use 2xRune of Hoelbrak, Strength and Fire for 60% might duration
I run juggernaught and flamethrower to have permanent 10+ stacks of might
I use Elixir B for fury, might, swiftness
I use Elixir S as my Oh kitten button
Pistol & Shield for static shield, projectile reflect, confusion, poison and knock back
If a thief attacks me I have numerous counters at my disposal

  • FT #5 to blind them
  • FT #3 blowout (Thieves only get stability from Dagger Storm)
  • Shield #5 to stun them when they attack
  • Shield #4 to reflect projectiles or knockback
  • Elixir S to avoid all attacks

This is just one build of many that the engineer has at their disposal. I levelled my Engineer in WvW with toolkit/Pistol&Shield and had no troubles at all against thieves.

If you spent half the time learning how to play your engineer instead of here on the forum you would know this stuff: Stop complaining and learn how to counter.

you should NOT be taking 10k backstabs unless ur running basically 0 defensive traits and 0 defensive armors. what are you running on this guy? zerk? rampagers? carrion?

Carrion mainly. Still wayyyyyyy too much damage for literally a second

It was impossible for that to have been “literally” a second. Whenever a Thief deals damage to someone while stealthed, they get a debuff called “revealed” that prevents them from re-stealthing for three seconds. Taking animation times into account, that whole burst took no less than 5 seconds, which was way more than enough time for you to press 9.

I main Ele and Necro, though I have an alt of each profession at level 80.

TOTAL = 22,224 damage.

I added that up myself and got the same number. Considering you took all that in 3 attacks, two of which are done almost simultaneously it’s safe to say that this damage all took place in the matter of about one second to bring you down. It was quite simple take one glance at your health after adding up that number and yep, you were down.

Anyone who reads the combat log further and tries to argue that it took longer needs to learn to not be lazy and do some simple math to prevent looking like a complete idiot.

I main a thief, and I’m not going to sit here and tell you to lrn2play or that you aren’t traited / geared right. I’m going to simply say that damage in this game is absurdly high. That’s right, I said it, I think burst in this game is kittening ridiculous and takes away from actual player vs player and having an engaging skill based battle. How do you counter act that? WHERE exactly is counter play when you’re down so ludicrously fast? Of course Thieves are going to be here and defend their ridiculous damage with an arrogant bias as if this somehow takes any level of skill to precast CnD, steal, then backstab!

I’m sorry but being able to down someone in quite literally one to two seconds is lame / boring and Arenanet needs to reconsider their game balance. I’m sure many are going to argue that it’s “fun” because it’s an easy mode “win” and “winning” makes people feel good about themselves, even if it’s something that doesn’t require any skill at all, like fearing someone off a ledge in Skyhammer.

Force the bads to use skill to win though … and suddenly there’s a ton of crying / whining / blahblahblah freakin’ everywhere in these forums. This community is in most aspects, a huge freakin’ drag.

Too short, too long. Man I had 10 minutes long duels, which I find it irritating. People doing some BS PVT gearing where it’s impossible to remove them, even if I went full glass, I still can’t kill.

@Jesiah 1-2 second fights are lame and boring to you, long drawn out bunker fights are lame and boring for me (on any of my 80’s not just the thief). There does need to be balance 10-30 seconds is a better range but any longer is just rinse and repeat until one side makes a mistake. A glass cannon thief can get lucky with a 1-2 second kill but it’s a gimmicky build that probably spends more time dead or looking for easy targets than actually doing anything constructive.

If a 1v1 takes longer than a few minutes I’m just gonna walk away. Actually had this happen fighting a mesmer with my engineer a few weeks back. Easily took 10m of back and forth until we both just gave up and went our separate ways. I hate those fights where I’ve seen my longest cooldowns refreshed more than two or three times in a fight, it might he exciting for some people but it’s boring as kitten for me. I love the fast paced action of GW2, one slip up is critical and could mean defeat.
