They (still) have issues.
Lots of Issues.
And no fix anywhere in sight.
Well, general forum conclusion: thief is weak.
Gnereal pvp forum conclusion: thief is weak because of sb5.
Reddit conclusion: thief will be garbage in every area of this game.
Thieves have a lot survivability issues – we still lack good damage mitigation. Stealth and Blinds aren’t really enough any more because a lot of classes got decent damage boosts. If you blind one out of three attacks, you’ll still lose more than 30% of your HP. For example warriors can frequently kill you with only Blade Trail → Rush → WW Attack.
Other than that, not too bad. Damage is Okay but D/P is still the undisputed king.

Thief is generally a free kill unless you’ve racked up a few thousand hours. Guards can eat through over half of your HP by just blocking (I’ve had my shield of wrath crit for 6-7k on a thief before and he was just running marauder). Warriors can sneeze and finish you. Mesmers may not have as much stealth as you do, but they have an asston and the ability to quite literally one shot you. Necros and engis will tear you apart with constant aoe (not that much of an issue if you initiate and keep them locked down).

After HoT? Prepare to get rekt.
In PvP, if you stop roaming and decapping and instead stay on a node as a DPS with an Engie and a Druid, Thief is where it belongs. But the current meta-mentality right now forces Thief to be a de-capper and +1, which IMO is a stupid strategy that rarely worked — to much wasted potential.
In WvW, it’s the same deal. Stay with a group with some good support professions and you can DPS until your fingers bleed.

PvE – DD/CS/AC – If that didn’t work, roll a Reaper or Revenant.
Or havoc with 2 Mesmers muahahahha use thief mobility with S/D and SB to start rooting people
