Well first, half the fight you go with Shortbow, which I assume is not a bad idea… on paper.
Fighting an average Mesmer is tough enough, you have to kill phantasms, and focus your damage on the Mesmer. Clones can be ignored, they’re a waste of time.

When I first look at your video, it looks like the Mesmer is chasing you all the time, even with swords. So I was wondering who was the Thief here. You should be the one to chase the Mesmer.
I’d go with dagger or sword to not let the Mesmer breath ONCE. You have to be permanently on his back, after some fights trust me, it’s easy to spot the real Mesmer. You just have to watch closely movements of your enemies for a second.

Also, you got the right Mesmer on target, spam or use once (depending if others use it too) CTRL + T. So you have targeted that bloody caster.
Bring some immobilize (venom/Infiltrator Strike) and some Daze to screw their rotation (if they even have one heh…) or simply disturb them.

And important thing : always kill the phantasms, if you let them live they’ll do huge damage to you.

For all these reasons it takes skill to kill even an average Mesmer because they have it easy with the clones/Phantasm and the confusion of the fight. It’s ok I guess, but it should be that powerful and easy imo.
I took a Mesmer to try some PvP and I barely read skills descriptions and even traits and I was doing good damage and facerolling people. Got kill because of course I didn’t really knew what I was doing. But no class should be that easymode, I can’t see the satisfaction of playing like this.

Mesmer isn’t “easymode.” Anyone with half a brain and decent reaction time can handle a mesmer. Phantasm build – dodge the initial phantasms’ burst and kill them, then target the mesmer. Shatter – roll through the shatter when the clones come at you and keep pressure on the mesmer (get close!). Confusion – a joke for the most part in spvp (not necessarily in tpvp).

People think mesmer is “easymode” because newer players don’t know how to counter them or other players just don’t want to learn how to. Once you figure it out and find ways to shut them down, it’s relatively easy to win a fight against an average mesmer.

LOL, mesmers are not easy mode. Its one of the most difficult classes to play.

Your playstyle works against a mesmer of average to low skill, but there are some glaring weaknesses.

First, if you are fighting either a mesmer using my tank build, or any phantasm focused mesmer, every time you fire that shortbow, you’ll be taking between 3 and 5 hits of retaliation damage. That will hurt, and build up extremely rapidly. Therefor, you need to watch very carefully for the retaliation boon on the mesmer and the phantasms, and stop using shortbow altogether if that is the case.

Additionally, the mesmer you fought kept shattering at long range. This allowed you plenty of time to see the shattered illusions coming to you, and you could either dodge them, kill them, or get out of range. A good shatter mesmer will close the distance with the leap, then instantly shatter and burst you. The mesmer you fought spent a lot of time running away instead of pressing and closing distance for the repeated leap—>immobilize—>shatter combo. Against a mesmer who did that effectively, you would die fast.

In order to fight a good mesmer, you have to keep them on the defensive. This means daggers all the time. Additionally, you need to be stealthed as much as possible. Being visible is being vulnerable, and a good mesmer will exploit that. It only takes a couple seconds for a shatter mesmer to burst down 80% or more of your hp, along with loading up 12 stacks of confusion on you. Avoiding that alpha burst is your top priority.

You can get out of 1 burst like that with shadowstep, but the cooldown for that sort of burst is 6-10 seconds. The only reliable defense is simply stealth, and making sure the mesmer is more worried about staying alive than killing you.

I’ll be honest here, it looks like neither the mesmer nor you knew what you were doing. Here’s a good video from a good thief on how to duel with shatter mesmers (the mesmer he’s fighting is really good as well):
