I’m rather late onto this as I haven’t come across this fractal much recently. However are thieves just an absolute waste of space at Old Tom now, entirely dependent upon other group members to keep them alive?

Any advice appreciated.

Smoke screen blocks his projectiles. Also if you untarget old Tom and then walk inside his body the projectiles won’t hit you either.

edit: If your group DPS is high enough you can use thieves guild and use them as your shield

Asura’s Elite golems will block projectiles. Also the radiation field little well thingy that pops up will as well.

I don’t believe it’s a bug or a hack to do it that way either. A big, giant golem should eat up some projectiles for you

That fractal is pretty much the only place I really advocate using S/P. It’ll save you from the harpy bombs on the way up and evade the spinning attack since our blinds are 90% useless against bosses. I haven’t done fractals up super high, but at least it has worked up through 20.

Ok thanks for the replies. If nobody has a better suggestion it does seem like we are royally useless in this fight now. Sure we can stand behind a guardian, a ranger pet, or an engineer’s turret but that undoubtedly means were are worse here compared to a ranger, guardian, engineer, etc. I wonder how the developers think a team of five thieves would do this?

I managed to heal myself through a 20+ fractal the other day with healing venoms, unloads through the shadow refuge, etc, but I doubt that’ll be enough past 30.

Don’t know exactly but I think since 2 weeks… 1 Month ago anet started to make swirling winds from ele useless there, later WoR and after that smoke screen and shield of the avenger

As far as I know nothing can block his projectiles now

I ran Fractal with my Ranger but not recently and I usually hide behind my spirits during the fight — so when you say “nothing can block his projectile”, does that include spirits?

Just physical “walls” or something like that (Mesmer: Feedback, focus skills, Guardian: Wall of Reflection, Shield, Ele: swirling winds and so on)
Players themselves, summoned adds or spirits are still able to block them.

So it’s easier with a full zerker group. You can summon your thieves, adds or whatever you want and just burst him down – when everything is on cd he should be dead
Little hint: you can summon Fire Elementals if you have enough money and use them as walls
