At 80 it is “ok”…..not great….just ok.

Getting there is more of a pain than other classes and it will just get worse with the backstab nerf and most likely more nerfs after that because Anet won’t fix the root of the problem (CULLING).

Look, I get that you’ve got issues and really want to express them all over the forum, but an as-of-yet unrealized “backstab nerf” and culling have almost nothing to do with thief PvE.

LOL. I have made 6 posts max. in thief section since the game released and probably no more than 13 total across all forms. Grats for offering nothing the the conversation except thumping your chest.

Culling has everything to do with the backstab nerf….. and every other thief nerf for that matter because of the PvPers crying. Thieves wouldn’t have gotten any nerfs if this game was straight PvE because they are mediocre at best compared to all the other classes.

Thief seems just… really really boring for PvE. 99% of the time you are just spamming cluster bomb or pistol whip over and over.

Simply leveling one was painful for me, I can’t imagine trying to do something like a HotW boss without falling asleep as a thief.

Try a more active build like S/D with acrobatics or even LDB dagger. These can be equally effective vs. groups of mobs, but rely a bit more on positioning and dodging.

Mine is only 45th, but I’ve noticed that all other professions find it much easier to kill things. Could be that I’m just an idiot, but I think the thief profession is grossly underpowered except for 1-on-1 combat situations.

Dont want to call us “the worst for pve”, i mean the blind and daze interrupt iv been doing in dungeons have been pretty darn handy for the warriors/guardians who usually take a huge beating without it. Combind that with smoke screen, well its great!.

Boss’s fights, well your just as good as the next one. Nobody iv been in a party with melee a champion or dungeon boss at level 60+. Its kite kite for all, more or less.

As to leveling from 1 to 80, 1-29 was quite annoying if not frustrating at times. After 30 things got abit better with the thief elite skill.

Anyway i like my thief & im sorry nobody see the value they have in PvE. Its abit sad really.

I may have said this here already. These threads blend together a bit…

On a warrior, I hesitate to rush into a group of 10 enemies. Because I’m durable but I can only take so many hits, you know?

On a thief, I take a second to size up the situation and make sure the right skill is on my bar, then I charge in confidently and carve them all up into little monster-bits as they lurch about helplessly through clouds of smoke.

Consequently, I prefer the thief. (Warriors are still cool, though. I don’t want you to feel judged. )

I never meant it cant be done what I am saying is that the build that does it will rely on caltrops.

You know those god-statue skill points in Orr, with a bunch of enemies? A few of them gave me a lot of trouble as a warrior. On my thief, a bit of positional cleverness is enough to just roll through ’em.

Now, I’m a better thief player than I am a warrior player, and my thief has better gear. Both those factors certainly contribute to my improved performance. But it’s also because thieves have better active defense than warriors, and active defense scales much better than passive defense does.

Pure crit build. No Caltrops, ever. I think the only time I’ve equipped Caltrops on my bar was for running past dungeon mobs.

I don’t understand your point. We were discussing how you solo the maggot spawning champion in Orr. I merely said that the dps from caltrops (while aoe) is lack luster. I have no idea what this has to do with skill points.

You have to understand that I am seeing it both ways. For instance my best PvE class is ele. I can solo a supply point in WvW on ele (that’s 4 vets 2 are ranged both ranged mobs blind). I once saw a thief run in an try to burn down the Guild champion solo. He seemed to be doing ok but all his dps was on one mob with avoiding dps from the others using blinds, stealth, etc. The way I saw it yes he can do what I can do but his aoe is weak (compared to other classes) and hes taking more risk. I Saw a guardian do it pull out a great sword and do basically what I would do without the kiting.

So while we can all do the same things fact is thief lacks the aoe and tools to do much of PvE as easily as other classes. I play a thief too I don’t feel I suck at it or even feel I am a better ele. I just have many more tools on other classes.

I have never, at any level, had an issue in pve as a thief. They can really kick some kitten and you can travel pretty much anywhere you want at a lot less risk than the other classes. The only things that ever give me trouble are ranged champion mobs.

I love me Thief and only ever PvE with her, so yeah, I say she’s great at what she does. When I play her dagger/dagger I go all Ninja like ASP said, playin’ P/P right now I’m doin’ a stealth build, when I do S/D I like to stack on conditions … but whatever build I play, I have fun at it. Way more fun than I ever got tryin’ ta play a fighter.

I’m sorry I stepped outta yer box, don’ worry, if
ya whine enough they’ll put me right back.

For a thief
Simple Mode: Gather all the mobs into a ball, drop caltrops, use dagger storm. Everything will be dead.
Boring Mode: Walk in circles shooting shortbow.
Fun Mode: Grab a sword and dodge through the group auto-attacking.

You watched a bad thief, or at least one not well-equipped for the situation he jumped into.

Great for exploring and soloing (so long as you pay attention since they arn’t all that hardy), especially since shadow refuge allows you to cheat and nab things without bothering to actually kill the enemies. They’re pretty good in a large group too with easy access to combo finishers, shortbow and stealthing downed players so they can be rezed but then…my 2 most played characters other than my main theif are a Mesmer and a Elementalist both of which seem to be considered pretty bad at pve. I don’t know how they compare to the likes of a Warrior or Gaurdian

Honestly, thief is ridiculously fun in PvE. I will admit that it’s a bit spam heavy. I really miss swapping weapons like I do on my other toons (thief generally revolves around using only one or two abilities over and over until your initiative drains). However, the dodging mechanic really makes the class shine.

Right now I’m running a heavy conditions build, and by myself I can apply 25 stacks of bleeding + poison to entire groups while evading most counterattacks as long as I have initiative.

Here’s the math for you. Your dual skill (#3) gives you an evade on every weapon set but double pistol. You can usually use that three times before running out of initative, giving you three evades if you time it right. With points in Acrobatics, you can get up to three rolls before running out of endurance and the way the mechanic is set up you get three rolls in the time it takes for your endurance to normally recover two rolls. Then, you can slot a heal skill which doubles as a roll and snare-breaker or a heal that stealths you for more evade. You can get utilities that provide an additional roll, targeted teleport, and cloaking. You can slot your rolls to leave caltrops behind you which makes it hard for mobs to chase you. And if that wasn’t enough, you can carry your shortbow as your off-weapon-set and use the fifth arrow ability to teleport away if you ever run into trouble.

When all is said and done, I usually have 6+"evades" or escape mechanisms available to me at any time.

Will you still die a lot? Heck yeah… thieves are super squishy. However, the survival skill-cap is pretty high, and you have so many tools that prevent you from taking ANY damage (period) that thieves can put out a ton of DPS while not dying.

In world vs world, I get embarrassed if I die more than once every three hours. There is simply no reason why any class would be able to corner me unless I screw up (or am facing another thief, haha)

Been playing my SB, S/P thief some more and it obliterates PvE. I literally out tank bunker builds and I have some hefty dps (3200 attack and I’m spec’d heavily into power/tough/vit/crit damage)

I have started to notice that PW is there for tanking with SoM and that’s about it though, in terms of damage auto attacking can deal a whole lot more (I’ve had 8k crits with auto attacking).
