1 vs. 1 against a Ranger?

Q:

I ended up in a 1 vs 1 sPvP, and was pretty much owned by a Ranger. (Background: my only other MMO experience is with SWTOR; I’m at lvl 80 but still a noob.)

My warrior uses a great sword for melee, a rifle for ranged.

I could not close with the Ranger to hit him with my sword, and his pets and rapid shooting greatly interfered with my attempts to use the rifle.

He was able to keep me foot-tangled and slow, even though I’ve got and use the “shake it off” utility.

In the 1 vs. 1 sPvP, he was able to reach a point I neutralized before I could turn it for even a second, so he had me 3 capped until I got sick of it and quit.

Any pointers for improving my sPvP? (Other than L2P — that’s exactly what I’m trying to do.)

Thanks.

A:

Not to advertise to much but.

Defektive [ONE] is a Warrior PvP video I made.
Within it there are a number of clips fighting rangers. (more so in the second half of the video).

It really comes down to mobility and line of sighting when need be.

@Defektive: I noticed you moving around a lot.

I’m a noob and I tend to fight flat-footed. Not an excuse, just an observation.

My only other MMO has been SWTOR, and for a combat-spec’d commando (roughly equivalent to the range-attack side of a Warrior), only the lame default attack is available if you are moving, so to do any significant damage, you have to hold still while firing.

But who am I kidding? I’m a noob, I don’t move enough. The better I got at SWTOR, the more I was dodging and juking around the WZs; I’ve got to bring that same approach to GW2.

I’ll certainly look for LoS opportunities, although there aren’t many of these if you are trying to take a point in sPvP.

Maybe the thing to do is kill the attacker, THEN take the point?

Depends on the situation. Sometimes taking the point is more important than persuring a kill.

And Warrior is very mobility dependent so try your best to build your weapons / utilities around having at least one form of gap closer in order to keep your DPS up on the target.

I love fighting rangers, they are my favorite morning cereal.

Step one, lay down the great sword, pick up a real man’s weapon.

@Obed, everytime i relogged (past tense) in SWTOR since GW2, it left me with a sour taste – for many reasons: Ability delay (huge and neverending), outdated combat and what not.

Rangers need mobility, stuns and close ups. A good ranger is pain but a setup with either healing + stun + mobility (be it 1h-sword/shield or GS + hammer and other combos) can make up for a fair fight.

3 Axes.

Maybe 4 if you have big hands.

Ok , ranger.. My favorite class to play .
Rangers( shortbow users) likes to keep a distance to fully utilize their cross fire . Things to look out for is the root skills we have . If you are rooted.. Prepare to use endure pain or shake it off. Most ranger will have access to 2 root at max.
A well played ranger will use the 1st root to test whether you have any stun breaker.( I usually does that). If you dun, I will swap pet ( 2 sec quickness buff) immediately and do some quick attacks and buff up for burst damage .normally this is when my opponent start using heals or damage immune skills.
After that my elite root skill will kick in and that’s when the real damage hits begins.
But if I fail to kill you during that phase, I either run or kite you..
Keep a eye on the pet. Diff pets have abilities that could really hurt you if you are not familiar with them. You should take a look in website and understand a bit about the pets we have.
Oh bad rangers, they charge in with QZ immediately and try to kill you. They are the easy prey.

If movement is your biggest issue, I suggest working on your keybindings.

First, rebind ‘A’ & ‘D’ keys to STRAFE otherwise you wont be able to kite or circle strafe your opponent effectively. (Circle Strafing is exactly what it sounds like, strafing around them in a circular fashion to disorient and keep your opponent on the defensive.)

If you are using a gaming mouse, they will generally have a few buttons on the side, I use a Razer Naga, so all of my weapon skills are bound to it.

For Utility skills; I have them all bound close to my movement keys, I use Q, E , R, F as it resembles most MOBA keybinds such as LoL or DotA.

Untick double-tap to dodge in options and bind your dodge key to something handy which you can press at the same time as your A, W or D Key. I use X, but Shift or Ctrl work just as well. (The Dodge key rolls backwards by default)

PS: I know using new Keybinds can be a little awkward to use at first, but stick with it even if your first reaction is “Ugh this feels aweful!” but it will make a lot faster & better after you get used to the new keybinds.
