How would you fix the warrior?
Lets boil it down:
1. There are definitely some utility skills that either don’t work properly or are not worth using. Explain some with examples.
2. Adrenaline/burst skills need to be tweaked in some way. I seem to always have full adrenaline before my burst skill is off cool down. There are a lot of burst skills that people see as soon as you hit them and because of that, are easily dodged.
3. Banners have great potential, but there is something that needs to be tweaked to get them so more of us want to use them. I tried a banner build, but ended up only using one banner at a time on short fights. Then, I swapped to not have any banners, and then needed my elite banner to revive some allies in battle.
4. traits – I feel like every time I want to use a new weapon combo I have to respec my traits, warping back to Lion’s Arch and spending moneys. It feels like traits for each weapon are on a different line. If I want to use that weapon effectively I have to put at least 20 points into that line. There are also a lot of traits that few to none of us use. Are you in that boat?
@zeyele: There is no “crying”, people just feel their class is in need of some fixing that’s all.
@Eddard: Elementalist are possibly the best designed class in the game. Can dish damage and condition damage through fire, heal with water, absorb damage with earth lalalala.
Now another break down. Warriors do have the highest Hp in the game, but armor isn’t a viable way to mitigate damage. Ranged classes get to kite, elementalist can put on earth shield and absorb damage, other classes get access to Aegis and Protection. All of these give a higher damage mitigation than armor. Since the warrior doesn’t have access to any damage mitigation other than armor and shield stance < which forces us to use a shield, the warrior suffers from much more damage than any other class.
Historically warriors are masters of war, be it through tactics, inspiration or brute force. Anet really nailed these in the warrior design but while it does look good on paper it doesn’t in practice. Why? Simple enough,
Brute force:
Physical skills:
Bullrush: Misses too much.
Bollas: Counts the new range created by a moving enemy as a range increase thus missing most of the time, sometimes it even goes in the wrong direction or hits a higher land and misses.
Kick: This should be a knockdown, instead it sends the enemy flying away, like if a warrior could create such a level of force against a fully armored healthy competitor.
Stomp: see above.
Now the inspirational part.
Banners:
All have good effects if spec into them. Problem? Their area of effect and buff duration is so limited it makes them close to useless. If picked up they replace your skill bar with useless skills. Their cool down is horrible and a bit more. This makes them a not viable as their town time is too great for their benefit and usually said benefits is none existent due to the miserable area of effect.
Shouts:
Are fine, even if shake it off should either remove more than one condition or send the condition back to whoever placed it on the warrior IF within the shout’s reach.
Now for the tactical part:
Signets: Every other class gets benefits from signets passive and active form. In the case of warrior the passive is no different yet the active leaves a lot to be desired. Our healing signet regeneration is great at low levels yet a high levels it barely heals enough to make any difference yet it’s active effect is so low it doesn’t make up for a healing slot. Mending removes conditions but again it’s healing value is way too low. Our only viable heal becomes our adrenaline oriented heal which either heals good if fully under full adrenaline or heals for crap if not full, this one comes with a higher cool down than the others. Signet of rage is a different story as it’s effect is great and has a decent cool down.
Stances:
Stances cool down is way too high, 180 seconds for some so on. These give little tactical advantage if used correctly but their cool down time is so high they barely become viable. Also in other to get quicken we take 50% more damage, this makes us way more soft than any glass cannon and makes it easy for most glass cannons to take us down within seconds. Someone mentioned we got higher def so we need to give more? Well thiefs get stealth to mitigate and land damage easier + their damage is sky high compared to a warriors and their skills got no cool down. We quicken and do a hundred blades. Big deal people can interrupt dodge or kite us. A thief can stealth teleport and land any skill he so wishes not only that but he can spam them.
Elites:
Signet of rage: Is perfect as it is.
Banner: Great skill under such a long cool down that you can barely use it or even think it exist making it not viable. In a dungeon with a good party you might get to use this twice as it will be under cool down any other needed time. For a few buffs that any other class can get for free in normal utilities and the ability to res which guardians can do on normal utilities as well. This skill got a way too long of a cool down.
Juggernaut: This skill was one of the things that inspired me to be a warrior pre release. But upon seeing it work is the worse skill ever created in any game I seen. It increases our max hp but doesn’t heal it. It gives us 5 new skills on top of our skills. You may say Wow that’s awesome but nop. You get to throw a stone. Such a long animation and slow projectile time that it can be ignored. You are taking damage while doing this. A bull rush which is the same as the bull rush utility. A kick…same as the utility…and a stomp again same as the utility. Not only are the animations slow, but their cool down is so long you will only get to use them once. They give you no advantage at all since everything they can do you can do on your normal form. Making this elite useless. Also you grow bigger…yeah that’s the greatest animation ever for a 30 skill point cost skill.
Now the over all problem.
Since our utilities and most of our skills are on high cool downs and bring little to the table we are forced to end using auto attacks more than any other class. This gives the over all design of the warrior a boring game play. As one of the game designers said in the manifesto trailer: “Hey I swung a sword, I swung a sword again…heyyyy…I swung it again…that’s just not fun…” That is what happens to warriors at the moment. Also add to this problem the fact that those boring swings are harder to hit than any ranged skill. If you fire your rifle while running around someone the bullets come sideways and hit as long as the enemy is within range. Our sword swings go forward that’s it you move we miss.
Lastly our main mechanic BURST. Doesn’t add anything, either it deals too little damage or you are better off not using it in other to have better heals and passive effects. Not to mention most of them barely hit due to the problem mentioned above. Not all are bad, rifle and log bow along with the hammer work as intended.
Spvp wise, the problem is not the warrior, is the ability to make bunker builds that makes most classes loose in comparison when playing any other build.
Had to divide this into 2 post!
buff hammer/sword+shield skills! 10 second stuns, no cast time, 5 second cooldown etc

warrior is OP.
love playing beserker warrior with axe/shield in regular pve. kill stuff faster then most and am durable. never even touch my healing skills as im getting enough healing ticks from blood sigil/ healing signet/ that one trait that regens based on adrenalin bar to the point of like 500hp a sec total. With +100% crit dmg (150% with the base) and an 80% crit chance without activating signet of fury the axes auto attack tears through pve.
love playing regen banners/ bleed stacker in spvp.
Ive mostly just taken my beserker warrior into wvw and used rifle but will switch back to axe/shield when an opportunity presents itself. Although i believe here i could probably benefit from some sort of regen banner/bleed stacking with rifle type build if running with a 5man team or larger.
If you are hating warrior, try using something other then greatsword, because yes, compared to axe, it sucks. Its made even more apparent in a pvp setting. axe auto attack does ~ the same dmg (maybe a tiny bit less) and you get the offensive and defensive asspects of a shield. YES i said offensive. Try nailing someone in the back with shield bash. A trick with shield is to trait to reflect missles. My general traits are:
20 power line: 12% dmg full adren bar, 10% crit dmg axe
10 precision line: 40 precision/ signet (i run mostly signets which is lame but i do swap in when i need)
20 toughness line: blocking reflects projectiles, +90 toughness and -20% shield recharge
20 crit dmg line: 9% crit chance with full adren bar, run faster while melee
gear is full beserkers and ruby orbs on armor. still need to figure out how much crit chance i want but currently i run blood sigil on shield and am still testing between 25 stacks of precision or 25 stacks of bloodlust. with bloodlust crit chance is like only 68% but with precision stack its like 80%. I need to get an alt weapon with the +5% crit chance sigil and start swaping it out once i got full stack but im too lazy ;-(
How would i fix the warrior? In short, I wouldn’t. Having tried playing many of the other classes, the warrior is in the best place by far. I love my warrior. I roll in two builds for dungeons and wvw. Either Rifle/Longbow build, or GS/Rifle, and either one owns. From up close or at a distance a warrior can deliver. I haven’t tried a heavy support build and I think the cooldowns on all banners are too steep. But I have experimented with a control warrior focused on hammer and the physical skills and that rocks pretty hard. The only drawback that build has is in pve content vs bosses with defiant stacks, then you don’t really do much, but that isn’t a flaw I would count as belonging the warrior class. My 2 cents.
I randomly had a thought about something that could be fun for the Warrior; non-weapon based adrenaline skills linked to F2, F3 and F4. But sadly it’ll never happen.

So you wouldn’t fix the flawed nature of Warrior “heavy” support? Why not?

I would maybe give some love to banners and the longbow, and that’s really it. Everything else on warrior is pretty good.
I would see my kicks be able to knock people off of ledges.
