Dear Anet,
consider following my steps to a better PvP experience overall (skip the details if you dont need deeper inside into my ideas – oh and excuse my bad english at some points).

1. Remove Hotjoin.
2. Add an unrated Soloarena wich continious after winning. Same like the Gw1 Random Arena.
3. Polish your Leaderboards so that we have a visible and reliable rating. Furthermore Team Arena should represent teams not players.
4. Add a Monthly (Automated?) Tournament.

Details:
What PvP lacks the most at the moment is competition … the biggest incentive* to play.
A polished Leaderboard and a Monthly Tournament would solve this problem for the everyday life.
You have to register your team to face up to 31 other teams. In case there are more than 32 teams (wich I doubt there are at the moment) Leaderboard rating will decide wich teams are able to enter.
The rewards of said tournament should be big. Something like gems, a special skin, a stomper wich works like the wvw league stomper we`ll see soon. This stomper would get passed to the next month winner. Compare it to the golden, silver and bronze cape of Gw1 GvG. Oh … and of course you should reward a lot of rankpoints and glory (I imagine something like 50.000 here for the 1st place).

5. Add an accountwide/charackterbound unlock system wich uses glory.

Details:
Now when it comes to rewards … revamp your glory system.
Remove all the silly materials the mystic forge and that pvp locker. Instead use glory to unlock all the armor and weapon skins out there … even t3 and those shiny pve skins. Once unlocked we can use them as much as we want. But things should not be unlocked after 10 hours of play. Make dyes unlockable for your charackter with glory, too. You still got those rank merchants where you could unlock things only if you get the appropiat rank (I like the idea of bags, backpieces and maybe something to even make real ingame gold!).

6. Polish your rankpoint reward.

Details:
Remove those situations where more than 1 guy is capping a point for no reason. Rework the way rankpoints are rewarded. People should get rankpoints/glory if they win a game. Reward people for winning in unrated soloarena matches. For each continious win there should be a bit more rankpoints and glory (maybe it has a cap of 25 wins?). People playing rated Soloarena all day should get more rankpoints for winning than those winning a few games in unrated Solo Arena matches. Even more points should be rewarded for winning a Team Arena match. The best way to earn rankpoints tho should be participating in the Monthly Tournament – winning or not.

7. Work towards build variety regulary.

Details:
Rework a trait, add a new sigil, rune, a new weapon, an utilitie, or even a mechanic like bufffood every now and then … it keeps the game fresh. With more variety we have a natural development in the meta when it comes to balance. Same like Gw1 was balanced due to so much possibilities to counter the common meta at some points.

*Incentive:

Even more incentive to play would be:
- A titel wich adds up wins in say top50 rated Team Arena matches.
- Something like 1% extra glory for each rank you got so you can unlock things faster.
- A table wich honors the winner of each Monthly Tournament.

Last words:
We need point 3 and 4 I was talking about and we need them fast. Otherwise there is no incentive to activly play as a Team. I can imagine a PvP community getting hyped for that Monthly Tournament wich gets shoutcastet regularly. Anet could even monitor the population and the interest in PvP due to that. If there is no interest at all at this point … i could understand the fact that PvP gets ignored for the reason that there is no profit. If it gets big tho we want to see NA, EU and even Asia compete in Yearly International Tournaments some day. For all the other suggestions I`ve made, I can understand that there are no ressources to do that now. Anyways those points are so important for a casual PvP experience it should be done anytime soon after the core element – competition.
I really hope that you, Anet decides to give PvP a chance. For that chance tho there has to be an investment first.

Sincerley,
the best player EU :-)

You mean like Hotjoin 5v5 is but you keep your team at the end (I’m sure that’s how GW1 RA worked) or would it join you with another random team (so you don’t just pub stomp all day long).

Also, don’t remove hotjoin. Do add a button “5v5 Hotjoin” and “8v8 Hotjoin”. Finding 5v5s is currently unintuitive and many new players don’t know it exists.

However I do know what you are talking about.
First I didnt want to post anything at all since I`m aware of the effort being worthless and not changing anything in the end. But those ideas were stuck in my head and I had to write them down in order to free my mind. I feel like those points should get alot more attention because they actually change how the gameexperience is after playing the game for severeal months.
At the moment it gets boring pretty fast.

this x1000!! I rlly loved RA coz of that – u meet quite good random teammates, u do well together so after win u try vs others. It was gr8 idea, made many 25 streaks with such system and was actually more fun than even TA 4me. If u got leaver no problem – u just get another guy who soloqed.
Should be in-game since launch… !

Also this! Think what U want but having good reward system is very important – I asked few friends (pvers) why they dont wana pvp. They said there is no reward for them for the time spent – no nice shiny skins or armors to look cool to unlock with glory, nothing to aim for actually (aiming for r80 is quite silly?). Ofc skill matters, but wouldn’t U get tired after 3yrs goin in same average looking armor doing same over n over and just watching ur purple bar goes up?

These are all great ideas! They are very much inline with our direction for the game. The one thing I have to disagree with as-stated is #1: “Remove hot join.” Removing hot join means removing all custom arenas, which we will not do as they have many benefits. I understand why the community wants this; to have the majority of the player base shift to a more structured format like an unrated solo arena. The best middle ground I can see is removing all ArenaNet custom arenas.

Honestly I think removing all of the Hot Join would probably fix the problem. And I think the community(Except for the glory farmers) would be ok with this. As they are basically duplicates of solo-queue except they are unrated and often unevenly matched.

If what I’m reading is that the only hot-joinable arenas left would be player controlled custom arenas, and players unable to enter those would be filtered into a structured solo/team, then that’s awesome. Not only would it help to unite the player base a little, but it would give owning a custom arena a much higher level of importance.

Keep in mind with the removal of AreaNet Hotjoins the community will greatly change. Massively flooding out the overdramatic players.

There are multiple benefits for this.
1.) You can get matched up with players that are of your skill level.
2.) You get to feel a bit of progression of skill.
3.) Owning a Custom Arena’s will get more value.
4.) The tPvP community overall will get a massive influx of non-overdramatic players improving the PvP community at large.

In addition to that there will still be Hot Joins available they will just be player made.

Removing official hotjoin servers will make more people buy custom arenas. In my eyes, this would be seen as “the plan all along” to have players subsidize basic game features. They should either be all removed or left as-is and provide better incentives to tournies (or less incentives to hotjoin). Either way, you would also need to fix matchmaking for soloqueue to really seal the deal.

Hmph( SIGH)

I’m here reading all these Great suggestions,s drooling slightly, wide eyed with a grin. Just showing how thirsty i am for a change.

But I Lost Hope back in July, shes wondering around the Mist somewhere. Its not the first time stuff like this has been suggested. Clearly Arena Net has no time to even say, “Hey i want that in our game it sounds awesome, gimmie 6-9months, and you will see results”. Or “ill speak to so and so Dev about this idea, and see what they think”
I have a better chance of having another child in the 9 months before i see results.

Lets get Down with the Deets anyway, because i still have Love for the game even though Hope is lost.

1. Remove Hotjoin.

Removing Hot join and replacing it with The “Random Arenas” type of queuing.
5v5 because thats what people play in Tournaments. Also bringing Meta to this game type.

The rewards for this Random Join, would be obviously Rank/Glory, the usual.
When you lose. You get kicked to Heart Of The Mist. – Join again for another Random Team

Since the match carries on if you win, Your (random)team gets reward more, the more they win.
If your team wins, this is where it gets interesting. More rewards per win/round. So lets say you and your Random Team won 10 rounds. They get, lets say 3 times more glory/rank. – Increasing every 3 rounds. So 1.5x at Round 3, 2x at round 6, 3x at round 9..etc With a cap at probably 25 rounds.

This will give rank a meaning again. Meaning that high ranked guy has won alot(random Join or Tournaments, either way you won alot to get that high). Instead of the current (That high ranked guy Farmed Alot).
On top of all of that good stuff, since the PvP comunity is so amazing, that team that just won 10 rounds, they can then easily contact each other and team up for tournaments since they did so well together. Doing so using the PvP Browser Recently Played, Another section in the UI can show your recent matches and who played with/against you. (With Stats showing how well you did. In tearms of Kills, caps, objectives)

You get rank/glory on a percentage based on your rank, Not a set amount When you WIN. Just like how PVE awards EXP on a percentage based on your level. Meaning Winning in this New Random Join means more rewards hence people will actually capture and hold the points to secure victory for their team.

[MY THEORY] – More fun=WIN
Instead of 8v8/10v0.
Have 8v8/10v10 TeamDeathmatch – Because we,your players want it( with Side Objectives)

Ok The Deets.
Am talking No capture points, low respawn timers, all out kill each other for points, Map control, and more points. Oh yeh and fun.
On each map as we know has Side Objectives. Make these the side objectives, Map Mechanics. With these map mechanics you use them to either gain a great lead in getting kills for your team, Or Catching up to the other team. Holding/Capturing them is where The TEAM, and Death Match comes into play.

Battle of Kyhlo – The map mechanic on Kyhlo is the the Trebuchet(TreeBucket). With the trebuchet, you can use it to get vast amounts of kills for your team. With an added Buff to the treb, it now instantly puts you in the downed state, and from downed to defeated when you are hit by it. The only difference between it and the sky hammer is that you can Dodge it.The treb can be destroyed and repaired as usual, But remember its a Team Deathmatch. Going to kill the treb might be trouble for you. Since the guy using it might have protection from another player, same for the guy running the repair kit.

Forest of Niflhel – The Map mechanic on Forest are the Chieftain Utahein and Svanir. We all have tried to kill one of them before and got hit hard or even killed by them. When the Two NPCs appear each team has chance to Tame that creature(last hit by the team). Taming the creature, it becomes friendly to their team and killing all enemys for a period of time(30-60 seconds) Kills go to your team.
Instead of the player getting their stats buffed, its the NPC that gets the buff, making it hit harder, heal, take less dmg(like the PvE frenzy on abominations in cursed shore). What makes it even more interesting is when a team manages to steal the other teams NPC, that team can use then use that to secure victory or catch up from a huge point deficit(if the NPC makes any kills).

Legacy of the Foefire – On this map the Map mechanic is the Lord. Dont change a thing, keep it as it is. Reason why is because it creates a sense of push or pull. Your team can either pull the enemy team into your base to come kill the lord. Rack up points for your team as they attempt to take the lords life. Or you can push straight into their base doing the same thing, split into two teams and attack from both gates, or pick of people running around trying to split. Killing the lord will give your team a great boost in points, winning the game if you already secured 350.

Raid on the Capricorn – The Map mechanics, are the Sharks, and the Cannon….im lost here…Anet can figure it out.

Skyhammer – The Map mechanic for this is the Sky hammer,
To make things interesting. Orbs(lightening Orbs) Spawn at A and C, Bring the both to the Sky Hammer portal to activate it for your team. Then anyone on your team can use the hammer for 30-60 seconds. After which it will need a new power source.(More Orb Runs)
This becomes interesting because, whichever team places to first Lighting Orb into the the Sky Hammer Lightening Orb Holder Thingy(Im a Norn, i dont know asuran tech), that team then has 60 Seconds to retrieve the second one, other wise it resets. This creates team work, in running the orbs, and also preventing the other team from getting the orb. (Orb Mechanics take of the same mechanics as the one in Spirit Watch)

Spirit Watch – The Map mechanic here is the Orb of Ascension, since this is very Norn themed, with the spirits of the wild, keep it that way.
The capture points are turned off but the animal shrines are still there, and so is the orb. When you run the orb to a specfic point. This will give your team a buff depending on what animal you run it to.
For example.
Blessing Of Bear- would give you, Vitality, Toughness and Power, For 30seconds
Blessing Of Raven – Would give Toughness, Condition dmg, Precision, For 30 seconds
Blessing Of Wolf – Would give Critical Damage, Healing Power, Vitality For 30 seconds.
Just examples. The buffs will last for 30 seconds, You can only have 1 buff at a time, since the orb wont reset for another 30 seconds after its been Ascended.

Temple of the Silent Storm – The Map Mechanics are are Perfect For Team Deathmactches. Keep em as they are. With slight adjustments.
Meditation of Ferocity – This will award +3pts per kill. They both stack
Meditation of Stillness – This Will Award Double Points Per Kill
Meditation of Tranquility – Becomes Defensive. Not allowing The enemy team to get points when they make a kill. For A Small Period of time. Totaly Turning the tide of the fight. Very Powerful Indeed.

Same maps, Team Deathmatch type games, with strong Side Objectives. This adds a new fun game type to PvP. The rewards may not be as huge as 5v5 Competitve play, whats rewarding is when you land that Earthshaker on on a guy thats about to Secure the Sky Hammer just before the orb timer runs out. Whats rewarding is that you can just join in the game melt some faces and let of some steam. Whats rewarding is the amount of fun i just had in this new fast paced, unstructured game type.

You may like it you may not like it. I Just want another game type apart from Capture Points. Its boring, its stale, its just not as fun as Arena net makes it out to be.

Take my ideas, tweak them, call it Heroes Ascent.(because it could be)

In case Anet wants more ideas.
You open the PvP browser. (New UI, like how the achievements got a new UI, you did it for PvE now do it PvP)
You See Buttons, Enter 5v5 Battle, Enter 8v8 Battle, Browse Matches (To Spectate, Join A Specific Match, Custom Arena). Or maybe even a Spectate button to Spectate a random match up. Im not a UI designer make it look pretty :P

So revamping the Current Hot Join System. To the old Random Arenas from Guild Wars 1 Style of Joining, Playing, Winning , Reward, Compete.
Solved the unhealthy hotjoin zerg.
Solved Rewards.
Creates A better PvP Community.
More Reason to Get Custom Arena Tokens, More game options.

That’s what WvW is for.

PvP should always be an environment for competition. League of Legends doesn’t have an 8 v 8 or 10 v 10 “for the casuals” mode that is totally different and separately balanced from 5 v 5. No. In LoL, even the casual, non-ranked mode is 5 v 5, and for an important reason: it allows the game developers to balance the game accurately from different demographic viewpoints.

In LoL, devs can compare and contrast the 5 v 5 scene between very high ELO players, as well as casuals, and get a more accurate picture of balance. ArenaNet DOES NOT HAVE THAT CAPABILITY. 8 v 8 is currently a waste of space that provides no useful information to ArenaNet for balancing the game! One does not keep trash piling up in a corner of the room. THROW THE TRASH OUT. League of Legends has 1 million+ active players and they’re at the forefront of e-sports right now. Learn from them.

Too right you are, The bridge between PvE and PVP in guild wars 1 was the zaishen keys.

I made a suggestion months ago about implementing a similar feature. Basicaly use glory to buy these keys to open this Massive chests that has a chance of giving anything from a super rare skin, precursors, dyes. RNG was in guild wars 1, its just that it was implement alot better there.

I called them Glory Keys and Glory Chests.
The Glory Keys can obviously be sold for gold on the trading post. So people who dont pvp can have access to the rare skins that come from the chests, and pvpers then have an economy for themselves where they can pvp and spend say 5k glory getting a Key, or selling it for …5gold.

Along with Glory your earned them from also winning in tournaments. So you would do a tournie, win and get x amount of keys. Because you deserve it.

Good ideas. Also there needs to be a way to gain experience in pvp. If you could level a toon in pvp I think you’d see a lot more people queuing up. The way it is now presumes a person will play one or the other, but not both.

As far as the skins go I think they should put all of the higher end ones on the BLTC for gems. It’s been a year and I think there are only 3 skins for each armor type for sale. If pvp starts making them money I think they’ll pay more attention to it.

I dont think you guys understand my posts. The “Hot Join” method of joining and doing pvp is still there, but revamped to reflect tournaments. With increased rewards and competition.

Where anet went wrong is restricting the game type to capture points. We are humans, its in our very being to WANT and look for change.

Thats why i suggested the Team Deathmatch 8v8. A change from the Capture Points. Its not Esports. Its not For you to spectate and learn how to play capture points., Its for you to go in pew pew, and have some fun.

And i agree on that, Getting exp for pvp.
PVE players do wvw, because the rewards in wvw tie in with pve, they get loot, gold and exp.
PvP can do the same, give glory, rank points, and exp. It would be nice but its not on the top of my lists.

I don’t understand why hotjoins need to reflect tournaments and/or serious competition.

If I wanted to be doing tournaments/ trying to compete seriously I would be. I choose not to take that route for a reason. I don’t care as much about serious competition as I do about convenience and time spent vs reward gained. I believe hotjoins have tournaments beat in this regard. The only reason I’ve ever had an interest in tournaments at all was because of the skins but after I’m done collecting them (and I’m almost done) I plan to quit doing tournaments entirely.

Why didn’t Anet just bring random arena to GW2 in the first place? -_-

How many people used to just sit there and chat? How many noobs learned game mechanics instead of just “zerg more”? Hotjoin is an enemy of this game. So many times players just ignore fighting and cap for points or zerg on 1 point and try to farm noobs which leads to the losing team having monster scores(always play for points not winning). It’s awful gameplay that doesn’t reflect how the game works.

We are already opened the pandora box , with allowing any1 to participate PvP from everywhere in the world (hence the 4v5 all the time) and the afk system ( hence kittenstorming your team8s when u loose ) , so instead of removing hotjoins ( where winning in no importance and u can leave anytime = more friendly enviroment) we should remove the ability to join hotjoins from everywhere in the world .

Combining with the future rewards and beacause humans are lazy to travel to the Mist and then manually find a server to play a game , we will <<force>> the majority to play tPvP instead .
And then the boffuns will whne , why the hell 1 rank is doing to their batteground ….. and then beg the company to lure new players….

Edit: We can normaly use Customs arenas but no Hotjoins , outside of the mist

This poster should be auto filtered; constantly spamming negativity.
If you look through this guy’s post history he’s constantly trolling sPVP forums, are there no repercussions for doing that?

These are all great ideas! They are very much inline with our direction for the game. The one thing I have to disagree with as-stated is #1: “Remove hot join.” Removing hot join means removing all custom arenas, which we will not do as they have many benefits. I understand why the community wants this; to have the majority of the player base shift to a more structured format like an unrated solo arena. The best middle ground I can see is removing all ArenaNet custom arenas.

As an alternate idea. Put in unranked solo arena.(like normal or intended) Make all the A-net servers base 5v5 but up to the crazy numbers as a custom arena option.

Then just remove the hotjoin button!

It will create server community’s very much like source engine like games, having to actually pick something is very diffrent to an individual. This also keeps private servers for teams to test, and leaves open empty servers from A-nets side so two friends who don’t own a server can try things.

Players who want instant action will probably take the unranked queue option bringing more players into the side of the game that needs population, as well as an environment to actually learn the game.

“I control time and space; you can’t break free.~”
“Maybe I was the illusion all along!”

@Evan Lesh:
I think a good solution would be something like Daishi has suggested. However, the option for Hotjoin should remain – it just should not be incentivised at all. As for Ranked Soloqueue, the rewards need to be substantially upped if it is to have any hope for competing for population compared to Hotjoin.

  • Remove earning Rank points from Hotjoin. As a casualised environment it should remain as an instant action option to test builds
  • Institute Unranked soloqueue. Still a casual environment as there is no leaderboard ranking to care about. More structured environment to learn the ropes. Rewards like Rank points should be about the same as farming Hotjoin at present.
  • Ranked solo queue should have rewards significantly increased to far beyond that which farming Hotjoin provides. Greater skill requirement and co-ordination should bring greater rewards, not less.

The Leaderboard system is pretty bad at the moment and incentivises not playing due to the risk of actually losing ranks from a single loss being greater than winning a majority of games.

The solution here is to institute a League system similar to that of the competitive Starcraft scene or League of Legends. Players all start in Bronze or equivalent when playing ranked.
Once they reach a certain point of victories that earn them Promotion Points, players are put up for a Promotion series of games to be put into the next league. If they win their series, they are promoted.

  • A League system promotes self-improvement whereas a single ladder does not . Psychologically speaking, players at the top are always disincentivised to play no matter how good the matchmaking system is due to the risk of losses making their rank drop precipitously. Similarly, players at the bottom are disincentivised to play when they enter the leaderboards and see thousands on top, and every victory only makes them climb a minimal number of places.
  • A League system allows for Seasons and Resets – both of which promote a flurry of activity at the beginning of each Season and which also allow the creation of new Achievements and Titles – both of which are significantly scarcer in PvP compared to PvP.
  • Titles and achievement points should be awarded for reaching certain leagues. If players reach the top league, they should be given a title also. There is respect to be gained here – and a competitive spirit – both of which are lacking from the current scene.

Rewards

  • Right now the Zenith weapon skins, Radiant and Hellfire armour skins are only unlocked when reaching a certain Achievement threshold.
One way to shortcut this for PvP players that already have a paucity of Achievement points due to not participating in Living Story Releases is for League unlocks also unlocking a Zenith, Hellfire, or Radiant skin.

This would accomplish 2 things:

  • Allow PvP players that have a paucity of Achievement points to bypass the system that disadvantages them.
  • Re-use existing assets – no additional development time save for scripting their unlocking.
  • This is also done whilst being able to “recycle” existing assets
