New matchup system (official info)
Interesting, can’t complain about facing new opponents, hopefully all servers pick up their WvW populations to make it so this doesn’t turn into a PvD competition in the lower tiers.
This new system doesn’t sound like its really changing anything..
The only thing its changing is who’s in green slot kicking the crap out of the other 2 teams

Anet: “Is Kaineng better than Jade Quarry? Before we never knew, but soon they might get a chance to prove it.”
That pretty much sums up the new system. I think we’re done here.
I think this is a great idea, but it’s too little too late. Most of the decent WvW guilds have jumped ship from low tier servers already. Low coverage = low coverage no matter who you are playing against. Sure it will make for a better primetime, but overnight, the higher WvW population server is still going to be the one that wins.

ArenaNet need to update there guild gossip! Kaineng is on Blackgate now, and Blackgate aren’t 1st place!
I like the new system, basically logical RNG. What i think ill like the most is not knowing who were fighting or what colour we will be until the match-ups have reset and you’ve entered WvW!

what are u doing…….. the tiers are too far apart to random match. it wont be ‘who will win’ u kitten kitten. it will be ticking 600 points total domination. total turn away both the competitive and casual wvwers.

This. OK its a rhetorical question but one with no validity whatsoever.
A couple of things:
1. a more detailed laymans explanation has to be provided, eg. why have BGs and SORs rating gone down but FA and DB increase? The example indicates that the range and/or deviation is too wide.
2. the example is obviously from a couple of weeks ago before SOR became the no. 1 ranked server. Please provide an example based on the final scores from last week.
3. There is a 100% probability that some servers will be stomped badly in the new matchups. This will be reflected negatively in their actual rating to an extent that isn’t justifiable.

This would be bad only if servers remain stagnant. The prospect of constant unbalanced matchups (since tiers are so far apart in coverage) and no longer being guaranteed to fight the same few rival guilds might eventually encourage “top WvW guilds” to (GASP) transfer off the same few stacked servers and spread out among more servers, which will in the long run result in better matches with more variety.
Under this system the only way to ensure “good fights” every week is to spread out, and not stack to the top like under the old system.
The only problem is coverage is king. One server could stomp another into the ground during prime time, but the server that can night cap entire maps is always going to win.
I was hoping for a system that took player activity into account. This sounds like it’s just going to be one server dominating the other two. I don’t think players simply want new match ups, but fair match ups. Anyway, I will reserve my judgement until the score system has been in effect for a few weeks. But as it looks on paper, I’m not convinced.

The only thing that worries me, is that matchups like these won’t be competitive:
Anything is better than what we have… so hopefully this will mix things up a bit… I still think a one up, one down system would be easier but hey… let’s give this a shot first and see what happens… just need the lag/server crashes sorting… today has been horrendous… we are going to lose this week because we keep crashing.

The only thing that worries me, is that matchups like these won’t be competitive:
I think the point of this new system is that the old ratings are not an accurate measure of a server’s skill. You are constantly facing the same servers over and over and it takes 4+ “match-up resets” of constantly winning/losing to even have a shot at a different opponent. There could be a really bad server in tier 2, but it just hasn’t had the chance to drop down in ranking fast enough because it takes so long to do so. And by the time a server has found it’s proper place in the rankings, all the servers have completely changed (new players/guilds, players/guilds leaving, strategy/commanders changing).
But for me the main benefit of this new system is not to “find your place in the ranking”, but rather to experience new opponents and develop new strategies to adapt. I’m sure playing against BG is a lot different than playing against GoM, and now we are going to see a trend towards experiencing those differences. WvW gets boring when 2 worlds can choose to gang up on another world and constantly make them lose, or when a world has their weaknesses exploited constantly. If we face new worlds, they won’t know our weaknesses/strengths, and they won’t have the framework in place for beating us. More is left unknown, and more is possible. It’s exciting!

Neither is the new measure based on the example.

It would be a good system if the random roll wasn’t between -1 and 1. So a much lower ranked server that gets a +0.9 might face a server with high rank that got a -0.9. This would result in a really unbalanced match.
I think this system will cause even more “stagnant” matches, since it gives a good chance for a high rank server to fight a low rank. The difference in population might very well lead to the lower rank server just giving up…not much fun for the top one. While the current matches get stagnant facing the same people, theres still lots of fighting in the higher teirs. IF this is to please the lower rank servers, I don’t think they’d have more fun facing a server which totally dominates them from the population difference and they sit at +60 the entire week…
So, I’m interested to see how this plays out..but they definitely should limit the effect of RNG on a full week of WvW. RnG for matches should not cause a whole server of people to get dominated. EVER. We already have to deal with RnG so much in our GW2 lives.

I think this will be pretty interesting. It’ll be nice to mix it up and fight some new opponents.
Also, when will this new matchmaking process be going into effect? It doesn’t say in the news post.
It would be a good system if the random roll wasn’t between -1 and 1. So a much lower ranked server that gets a +0.9 might face a server with high rank that got a -0.9. This would result in a really unbalanced match.
Thank you thats a better explanation than what anet provided and you’re right the range is clearly far too wide, absolutely crystal clear.

Going to guess this will start next Friday (31/May) but we don’t really have confirmation. Can someone from anet chime in?
This looks interesting. I’m excited for the thought of new opponents, and people moving around the tiers every week.

I’ll try and do some computer simulations to see how far you can actually spread and how often it happens in the next day or so, so stay tuned

Yeah, give us 2 weeks of the new matchup system, then open Free Transfers for a short time! It’s both a terrible idea and the right thing to do, at the same time…
This system seems a bit crazy to me.
SoR vs any 2 servers not named JQ ticks at over +500 the whole week. No fun for anyone!

Anything to get some new match-ups is a great move. Nicely done ANET. It gets boring playing the same servers every week.
Why would you complain about this?!?! This is great! Some matchups will be roflstomps, fine. That’s better than facing the same two servers for 3 months. Especially when that 3 month matchup has the exact same outcome every week! I’d love to get my kitten kicked by someone.
Locked tiers were terrible, we need the variation to get some true ratings. They can fine tune the variation as we go along, but this is an excellent way to start. Two HUGE thumbs up from myself, and judging by the reaction on our server forum that goes for all of EBay’s WvW community too. I’m fairly sure AR and BP share our sentiments as well.

I think the idea is eventually whoever is in this position catches on and sends some guilds to other servers. There’s very little doubt that the tier 1 servers (SoR in particular) in their current forms will dominate any server outside of tier 1, but this system would ideally force the balance of power to spread out across many more servers (the alternative is terrible matchups every week). This is in the long run, of course. The next few weeks will probably be fiascos, but I don’t see a better way forward in terms of dealing with stagnation.

Why would you complain about this?!?!
Cause look at the proposed matchups.
They can fine tune the variation as we go along,
Why not fine tune it now, ensure the matchups aren’t to out of kilter, then increase the range later on. From the example given they are starting off with far too big a range that will lead to hugely unbalanced matchups.

Another fail, good job. RNG on ratings, awesome.
The more I think about this, the more I like it. Those who need to plan out their reset nights will hate it of course, but it is also exciting. Until the reset happens, you have no idea who you are playing and you have no idea what color you will be. Should be really fun.

Under this system the only way to ensure “good fights” every week is to spread out, and not stack to the top like under the old system.
I agree with this. Currently, people have been stacking into T1-2 servers to ensure “good fights” every week. Now that this might not be the case, it could encourage some of these stacked servers in T1 to “de-stack” and spread out and create a lot more balance. And YAY for variety.
I would just like to point out, that if the tier 1 servers absolutely destroy the other servers, their ratings will actually increase further so that the poor matchups happen less and less often.

Say what? … but I’m … what? … The natives are still here, the ones on BG aren’t even from Kaineng originally. They’re the hoppers from other servers. Don’t confuse me like that, I haven’t had my coffee yet.

Already answered, they could decrease the range of the RNG variable to ensure the matchups aren’t as out of kilter as the proposed matchups indicate.
Ask yourself what are they trying to achieve? The answer to that seems to be more variation in the matchups whilst ensuring the matches are at least somewhat competitive. The example given doesn’t provide that.

Hmm, this should be interesting. Shame they don’t put in a week or so of daily matchups though to test it through like they had at launch. Daily resets, that would be fun.
They need to pair a NA server with a EU server. Weak and strong together, mid and mid together. This will help with coverage since the strong server will help the weak one and the mids will have strong primetimes during their play time. Eventually if they have asian servers they can add those to the mix.
This is a bad idea, a really bad idea. Most matches will not be fun with one server dominating everything, morale in weaker servers will drop and people will stop logging in.
This would be more successful if there was more incentives for servers to actually win. As it stands, almost every guild in WvW is losing players to boredom and lack of a push for servers to win. Freshening up the ladder is a good step that is much appreciated, but the majority of wvwers thought this was coming in january or february and have left since then.
I’m looking forward to the changes—should make things interesting, theoretically. I doubt there will be a drastic difference in the matchups we see from a BG perspective though.

I guess with the random rolls, we don’t have advanced notice any more of which servers we’ll fight on reset nights.
This is a great move, variety is good, yes it will suck for the first week or two but think about the movement that will occur through the servers. The 3 “Tier 1” servers will not be only ones who are able to duke it out for #1 due to the “Glicko” or “Elo” stopping servers from facing harder competition which has been the case a for a while now.
Good job Anet now all you have to do is combine the EU servers with NA!

I do not believe that this will encourage guilds to spread out to other servers unless free transfers are implemented and I don’t believe that free transfers will be implemented again. Caused too many problems before.
This will also discourage those that cannot field the same numbers to just not play till they get a match where they can compete. What is the point if you can field a full bl but get stomped in the others because you just don’t have any where near the numbers that a different server can fill.
Then there are the guilds that moved to specific tiers because they wanted smaller fights instead of the ones that you get in higher tiers since those have higher WvW populations and can fill more bl to capacity and have a much easier time to ball up into a full bl zerg. Those that moved may enjoy this for a short while but at some point, they will tire of fighting that type of fight they moved away from in the first place.
I don’t think this is a good idea and more thought should be put into this.
New rating still isn’t going to show any server skill.
