Pretend for a moment you are a newbie to WvW or you are just trying to get some tactical/better understanding of how to play it.

You pop on the WvW forum as many people do and start browsing the posts. What do you learn?

Jumping puzzles QQ
Nerf this profession/ability
Peoples Suggestions on fixing this or that.
This sever cheats, this server only zergs, We are better but not enough numbers….

Heck look at the stickies even, the only thing we have is how to keep score, when the reset happens, and night capping… That is sad.

Day after day I hear both commanders and veterans of WvW complain about how the “Randoms” do not know how to play and hurt us. But yet we do not try to teach or put our knowledge out there.

I challenge us as a community to start adding some good threads on tactics, general gameplay and ways to help all of us get better.

People say they want more small groups. Make a thread telling of the synergies of classes for those, possible builds, strats to use. Let people know that the badge drop rates seem to be higher in a smaller group. Get people excited about trying it.

I would love more info on seige. Where to put trebs, what they can hit from each spot.

Once we put the work in and get those threads, we need to challenge ANET to acutually sticky something in here that will be helpful.

Just an observation, i think we are missing what this forum should be about.

To be fair you honestly can’t expect people to be disclosing “secrets” so their enemies can use their tactics against them. I mean, that’s why you don’t see treb placement and proper portal guides.

Big, comprehensive guide to WvWvW.
I might outline some of the contents but many of my thoughts about WvWvW are yet to prove in practice as they can’t really be applied/tested on a server like Drakkar Lake.

The only crime, turrets committed, is being good against the celestial meta.
The mob has spoken and the turrets shall be burnt at the stake.

I didnt say give away all of your secrets I know each guild/server has their special tricks.

Knowing that the enemy can treb your garrison from Sunny or Cragtop, lets people know why the should be defended so tightly. There are priorities on what you should defend and why. Our whole teams should know these.

Knowing when you see Faith taken, Bay or Sunny will be hit next makes a big difference.

Knowing that a ram does not hit walls makes a big difference. I’ll admit to this one. I started WvW about 2 months ago. I ran around a day and finally started figuring out the maps (as in where to go, not how to play really yet). I decided I wanted to help my team more by buying some siege. Being poor I bought 2 rams and an arrow cart.

The small group I was in (about 5 mostly new) decided we would try and ninja Briar from the tunnel on the side. I dropped a ram, we build it, and then all realized it would not even hit the wall.

A commander then ran by and yelled in /s WHAT NOOB built rams on a wall!

Well I was that noob, and I can tell you it was many weeks later before I dropped anymore seige.

Just saying, you can share info on here without giving away your top secrets

I´ve been posting these topics on a guild forum & alliance forum, where I´m a member .. but due to the fact, that my knowledge is limited & experience also, I´ve not yet finished it. But when I´m done with it, at least the general border, then I intend to post it here anyway. WvW is really not understood by 90% of population, that´s why this forum is overdrown by gibberish data ..
.. placing an incomplete thred would only cause spam posts – that´s why I rather wait & fully finish what I´ve started – personally.

WvW has a very steep learning curve. And to answer your request I have been offering in game training classes to people that are new or have any questions for a couple of weeks now. It has been going well.

As far as new people what they think and feel about WvW. Largely intimidated and confused. There is very little to any information posted anywhere on how all the things in WvW work. Why cant a game company make a instruction manual, I have been compiling some information to make a guide for the new people in my guild but I do find it a little silly that us as players have to document how a game works and the company itself doesn’t.

But I agree we as players tend to complain or belittle players that do not know everything from the beginning. That was us at some point to, so a little patience should be held for them.

On the flip side though, I would also ask opponents to act a little more mature. If you see a level 10 running around aimlessly you don’t need to run over to him with 20 guys and just crush him then proceed to /laugh or /dance on his corpse. Turning away new players by being a jerk will ensure this game has no future.

I would have to say this is the number 1 reason why allot of new players arn’t joining or staying with WvW. Griefing – Greifing is by far the first thing that i find the most disheartening. I have had 3 Rl friends join in the last few weeks they got to about 40 , and wanted to try WvW – so they had a ok grasp on there skills and abilities. They loged in and Hoped onto eternal they got just about 100 ft outside of there starting spawn and got Rolled over by 20 griefers. That was Just lame. No i understand blocking players from getting to reinforce the other groups .. is part of strategy But when you own everything in Eternal or at least 90 % Its just weak To grief Spawn of the server your dominating. Im sure ill get flamed and everyone will say I’m just QQing thats fine. Just takE into consideration .. if we continue being a bunch of Greifing jerks People wont join WvW and end result will be .. we will eternally be Fighting the same people and it will just get stagnant.

The op has the correct state of mind. Honestly any other point of view is just selfish. The wvw community needs more who think like this. Otherwise there isn’t much that separates toxic communities from games like loco, or aika from us. If we want wvw to be more successful the community need to step up and help. If that means spilling all secrets then so be it. Look at league of legends. Arguably the most successful pvp game ever. Any “secrets” for lol can easily be found on sites like mobafire.

Here is the thing about WvW people don’t quite pay attention to map chat, and most of us(including me) want to level up to be 80. We only hit camps and never quite follow what the commanders tell us to do. I understand that low levels will drop when trying to cap a tower, but to tell the truth every single person helps in taking a keep or tower.

Also commanders in any server you are not helping ur server if ur just running around and not giving out commands to ur zerg. I can’t stand it when u also stand in LA (lion’s Arch) having ur commander symbol on and doing nothing XP people who r new to WvW the best way for u to learn WvW is to follow a commander or a zerg, follow commands that r said and try to learn all the tactics that they exploit XD

don’t use that poor excuse for a game as example lol.

And LoL is not such a big scale as WvWvW. All those “secrets”, you are talking about are merely some well executed moves, similar to the comboes and tricks, dagger elementalist players use. You can tell those openly, cause 95% of the people are too clumsy to get them right anyway.
We are talking about strategy here. A strategy which can make or break a match with a weak long duration. I’m fine with people NOT telling everything they discovered.

Fully agreed with OP. And though “secrets” shouldn’t be spilled into the open.. it’s wise for people to know how and where to place trebuchets (though this is more of an in-game issue, since if you ask me there should be a range indicator in the game much like how the AoE circles work).

About the different small group strategies though.. Please don’t bring up specifics on that. GW2 was designed to not revolve around getting a healer, a tank and three DPS. Changing these things into groups asking for Guardians or Thieves specifically would just become an annoyance and a new way of griefing.

This is a group-based game (The entire game, not just WvW).

If a new player was really interested they could easily practice on their own or look for the millions of videos on youtube or whatever. There is a lot of info out there, but I do think a forum guide isn’t bad, I will gladly contribute what I can. But I am a bit sorry to say that most new people will not come to this section of the forum and read/research on their own. I wish they did or would.

I feel that we as a community are pushing people to be zergs. They are afraid of making mistakes, or just get yelled at when they do make them. There is so much they do not understand they become lemmings. ( I do not mean that to degrade anyone, just making a point)

It is safe to run around and auto attack amongst the pack. It is easier just to run where ever the Blue Icon goes without thinking about what they are doing. This will not make people better or understand the game more.

I agree with you that this is a group game, but I also see a very big place for small 5-10 man teams taking objectives. If your zerg has the other team occupied fighting at Bay, a good small team can take half the rest of the map. These are the teams I enjoy running with. These are the teams that advance your strategies and success rates.

No matter how big your pop. sooner or later someones zerg will be bigger than yours. If you do not have a sound backup plan, and trained small groups, you will lose and fall down every time.

The zerg is obviously very important and (often) key to capturing keeps or heavily fortified towers. What most people forget though, is that everything matters. A roaming group of 3-10 is instrumental at preventing a siege or defense to reinforce. Picking of dolyaks for hours deny the opposition a lot of points, not to mention straining their supply for future players.
Which brings me to the gamelengths.
The battles lasts for a week. I usually log on late at night and face dire odds. I simply abandon the notion of capturing any keeps, but focus on supply raids and loosing points as slowly as possible. All to make it easier for our morning crew.

I think a lot of people are fixated on the idea of conquering keeps is the shiz. It is, ofcourse, important but not the only thing needed in order to win.

in our guild we have a person that teaches everyone who wants to know how to use siege and we all try to help the newcomers out, but some of them just follow zergs around or the wrong commanders.people just need to be patient and actually try to slow down to explain. so whoever is in our server and needs help address someone from our guild…btw ishionna is nr.1 siege teacher!look for her!

Well, I am a new player (started yesterday!) and I’m now at work desperatly reading about WvW! I think its the most interesting aspect of the game. There is a dearth of information on the subject outside of the wiki description however, I would love it if there was an in depth guide here that I could read.

Next I just need to find an WvW guild on Ring Of Fire that tolerates n00bs
