It could be from an email and yes, saying that in game could get you reported.
It has happened before, that is why it’s important with email to write an explanation as to why your sending a lot of gold. Because your account can get flagged. support does check the email, so if legit no action will be taken.
As for automated, I have no clue.
Anet however does not have to explain anything though, just be glad you can play again.
The problem is, I’ve never joked about being a gold seller, I’ve never pretended to be one, I don’t even play PvE currently, and I have not sent anyone anything.
If its automated, it’s really unfortunate that some trolls can get you banned.

It could have been anything really. Unfortunately it might remain a mystery.

To explain. Anet has stated many many times there is an auto-detection system that marks suspicious activity’s. An actual suspension is done by a GM personally. This off course doesnt make the system fool proof, GM’sare also persons and they are reviewing data (gamelogs). So they see the situation with different glasses on. Nevertheless, they are trained to do so but mistakes can happen.
This heroic chest you normally get when you start playing the game with a new account (heroic edition or digital deluxe heroic edition. It might be that your account got changed to a heroic edition due to this situation.
Keep in mind that the support liason Gaile can review the process here and the way things where communicated to you. She MIGHT be able to tell you what the exactreason is you got banned, but she might also not be able the reason is that the exact parameters on wich those auto-detect systems work are being kept secret. If such a system marks gold transfers between accounts higher then e.g. 50g as suspicious, the gold sellers would only sent 49.9 gold per time to avoid detection.
So I’m certain that Gaile will review your case and give you some feedback, but you might not get the exact answer you seek.

I have heard of people getting that ban when they send gold to another guild for a WvW transfer transaction — ie. sending thousands of gold to help a guild transfer to their server to help in WvW. The system seems to see X amount of gold exchanging hands and flags it.
Have been Guild Wars player since 2007, and have spent thousands of hours in GW1 and hundreds of hours in GW2. I’ve never received any ban or account suspension, ever.
I’ve always played by the rules. Now 2 days ago, I got falsely accused and got permanently banned for being a Gold Seller.
I filled the support ticket, giving all information requested and updated it additionally 4 times with more information to help the people at customer service see that I have not taken part in any gold selling. (Ticket #54419).
Today, my account gets un-banned, no explanation given whatsoever, no reply from the customer service, why was I banned, why did this happen, who made this mistake, my account was simply unlocked again.
However upon making the ticket I specifically requested an explanation – I want to know who made this mistake? Arena Net, you claim that system is not automated, however, I find it hard to believe. What’s even more ridiculous, upon the log in, I received Heroic Chest via PM from Arena Net saying “Thanks for playing GW2.”
Thank you, but that’s not what I want, I want to know which of my actions while playing the game triggered the ban.
Actually, there wasn’t any sort of “false accusation” here. The account was being used to advertise gold. The fact is, your account was hacked and then returned to you in response to your support thread. I’m sorry if that was not clear to you. The account was used — during the time it was used by the hacker — to advertise a gold-selling site.
Please read through the security article — I’m sure it will help you ensure the security of your account moving forward.
As to why you were given a heroic chest, I cannot say why that happened. I am investigating, but I think you should simply consider it a gift and feel free to use the contents if you see fit. Otherwise, you may delete the chest or its contents.

Nick — again, from what I can see in the ticket, your account was hacked and used to advertise gold sales. The email that you received from Support provided you with new log-in information and links to our article about Security. It did not specifically tell you “Hey, your account was compromised” and I believe you should have been given this info, so I’m talking to one of the leads to get the info out to agents.
Why you received a Heroic Chest I cannot say — there are no notes that indicate that one was sent to you intentionally, so I have to wonder if its transmittal was a glitch. I am checking on that.
In the meantime, please be careful with your account and read the security article in the link you were sent.

I’ve no idea how it (my account) could have been hacked (I honestly doubt it was) since I double checked the IPs that had accessed my GW2 account and all of them were mine.
Plus, I full system scanned my pc and found no malware/viruses and the password was unique to GW2 only, have never used it anywhere else. And my email is more than secure (hopefully).
Maybe I got reported for something that looked like a “Gold selling”.
It just seems strange and suspicious since I can’t see any evidence.
Have never had any account hacked.

I’m pretty certain that if they found your account selling gold and telling you it was hacked and then reinstated it to you, that that is what actually happened.
Just be glad you have your account back and make sure it’s now safe. (Not all hacked account show ip’s in your list)
Hackers try their best to leave no trace of their actions.
It’s like asking your friend if you have anything on your face. I guess they could lie, but if you weren’t going to believe the folks who know the facts, who would you believe? And why bother asking in the first place?

Yeah, but how do I avoid being hacked again if I have no idea what got my account hacked since I’m always trying to take care of them.
What if I get hacked again and this time I can’t make another ticket.

You read the article I keep mentioning. You change your password. You never share your account. You use a password you use nowhere else. Etc.

Alright, thanks.
While I was looking through the internet for the possible causes and similar cases, I read that some people claimed to have their accounts permanently banned without the option to appeal the it. That was what worried me the most.

Even if you can’t log into the forum you can still contact support by using the support tab at the top of the page and making a ticket.

Hi Nick,
You said it very right, some people claimed to have their accounts permantently banned. without an option to appeal it. The word here is ‘Claimed’.
I use a simular but different example cause it is much more straight forward. It happens often here that some complains here bout a suspension for bad language, saying (very convincing) they never said something wrong. Gaile comes in and respects someones privacy and describes it as a reference to certain body parts.
What I’m trying to say is that accounts issues deals with people who are supposed to have done something bad. Some are false, or semi false or hacked or have a story behind it, but sometimes the people responsable just fail to see that they did very wrong. Or they do know it but are so bad they keep claiming how wrong Areanet is. In the end off course it is a matter off trust and personally I trust them in those conflicts. but they also need to deal with privacy, so even when the person claims to be judged very unfair, they cant defend themselfes with the facts they obviously know.
So don’t believe always what your read on the internet and trust Anet for doing a good job

My account got terminated like 5 or 6 weeks ago i think. It was a false accusation and i got a Heroic Chest after they lifted it as well.
I have a collectors edition and i think the mail with the chest could be triggered when reactivating a collectors or digital deluxe edition account. (only for those that were created before the introduction of the Heroic Edition)
Might be a simple trigger in the database causing that.
Edit: They never told me why my acc got terminated and i dont think they will ever talk about their mistakes in detail
I can personally attest to the fact that hackers obtain email-lists from various game pages and try to scam you/hack you using this information.
I get tons of fake ArenaNet Emails on my old Mailaccount (the one which sponsored GW1 back in the day, and GW2 during beta, and was used for forum registrations etc.) – luckily, I now use a seperate account for GW2 and only GW2. Never received any scam-mails there. Never got suspended for anything.
It really helps to use a seperate email for important accounts, even if it is a pain in the * to keep track of all those passwords. (Will install password manager today ^^°)

Frostee, unfortunately, your best password manager is a piece of paper.
