Hello,
The situation is:
- i work 2 months overseas on a cruiser ship for a company Royal Caribbean
- so, 2 months i am at my home in Europe, and for 2 months i am on a ship,
with a descent (but not mega descent) internet connection
I am currently on a ship for the next two months, and am expecting my new
laptop to arrive.
I would like to play the game when i am at my cruise period.
The game is currently installed on a desktop, it is a downloaded edition,
and on the cruiser i work on, there is no possibility for me to do another
diownload/installment on my new laptop i bought just for the sake of being
able to play GW2.
What would you suggest, do i have the option to buy the game client on a
hard-copy with all the latest updates(patches) ?
Or somehow to transfer (backup) the game from my desktop PC ?
Any help/info would be appreciated.

Good question. I know I have 2 accounts of Guild Wars 1 on my old computer, I access either thru the log in on the client. My guess is, you can. You should be able to access your account on any computer that has the game by using your login. But if you want to be sure, you can contact support and ask them. Go to the support tab at the top of the page and then go to ‘ask a question’ and fill out a ticket.
Copy it to an external hard drive. Thumb drive is possible (32GB one) but since all thumb drives I’ve played with are formatted as FAT32, that limits the size of any one file to 4GB you will have to use a utility to break the gw2.dat file up into parts and reassemble it on your target computer. I used 7zip, setting compression to none and span size to CD (DVD size is larger than 4GB). Just make sure to include the splitter program along with the rest.
It’s how I moved a copy of the game down to my folks for the holiday last year (didn’t have a 32GB key, used a 16GB and an 8GB). Once you put all the files from the original game folder into the new one on the target system, you should be good to go.
You are allowed to have as many copies of the game on as many different machines as you want. The license is for your account, not the game. As long as you are logged in only on one machine at a time, you’re golden. Which reminds me you should bring along a copy of your serial # in case you have to deal with support while you are at sea.

@Behellagh.1468:
Yes, this is my primary concern, should I just tell my brother just to to “backup” my game with latest patches, send me, and I will be ready to go? Will this work? Are all the files in game folder, none of them in some other system folders?
All the files are in the game folder for the game. There’s a Guild Wars folder in the user’s Documents folder and that holds your screenshots, alternate background music a Local.dat file which likely contains your game settings (maybe just hardware), saved account name and password. Not sure about keybinds and the like, I play a rather vanilla set of keybinds so I wouldn’t have noticed when I played at my folks. I wouldn’t recommend transferring this file over. I didn’t bother since I had to choose very different graphic settings for the game on their machine.
That folder will be created from scratch when you first start the game, along with the gw2cache folder buried deep in your user folder and used for the TP browser.
The only other thing is making sure you can get to your e-mail as I expect you will be asked to authorize the new IP address a few times while out at sea.

The BEST place to ask this would be the technical help forum, as this is exactly what it is.
I know my thumb drive is formatted NTFS. I think the main file you need to copy over is the gw2.dat file – which is one HUGE file. That and the launcher is what you need.
Anyway, the Tech Issues forum is the one just below this one on the list – the folks there definitely would have the exact answer you need.

As suggested, i opened a thread on Tech Issues:

It seems that viable solution is really just to copy the game folder to other
computer. Tnx all
