Q:
Updating Google Authenticator kills accounts
A:
There’s actually an easier way to fix this that doesn’t require support at all:
https://account.guildwars2.com/recovery
Choose to unlink your old authenticator after you provide the info required above, log into your account, and setup the new authenticator app.
Google really needed to provide some sort of warning before they decided to destroy all existing account configuration. That was really quite poor on their part.

I have had this happen today. All my accounts are gone from my authenticator and it won’t accept the serial key I had written down.
I tried getting onto the support pages but Firefox threw me an “unsafe connection” warning.

Currently the support page has an issue. You get a warning that it is unsafe, but in this situation you can click to continue anyways. If you don’t trust it you can also mail support at support@guildwars2.com

I think that Zedd’s input may be the way to go but I am checking this with team members who know best practices for authentication to make sure that you should go through those steps. (I know Zedd won’t be offended that I’m verifying process.

Oh, I’m not offended at all. I’d much rather this info come from official channels than some random user (in this case, me).
I’m actually curious to know what the recommended procedure is in a situation like this as well.
The account recovery link above did end up working for me but I also panicked when I discovered I was locked out of my own account despite taking steps to prevent exactly that! Thankfully, I wasn’t locked out of my Gmail account as well. That would have been far worse.

Well, it worked for me, too – I was able to setup the authenticator app again afterwards.
