Q:

I seem to be having quite bad FPS in-game with good hardware. I got this computer thinking it would run the game a lot better but that doesn’t seem like the case..

It has a GTX 1080 8GB GDDR5X, Intel I7-6800k 3.4Gh processor, 32 gigs of gaming RAM, 1000watt power supply, so I really don’t know what the problem is. If anyone can help, I really appreciate it in advance. Windows 10 Home 64-bit
BEFORE ANYONE ASKS- I have updated my driver’s to the latest version.

can you define ‘bad fps’? what is it exactly that you’re seeing (actual fps numbers and when they happen)?

And when I say bad FPS, I mean drops from a perfect 60, which is what I have it set to, down to like 30-40. Especially in main cities and such.

It’s not you or your hardware, the problems lie elsewhere.

If it isn’t my hardware, then what is it?

Don’t run the game on max settings unless you’re in a map alone.

The client is old, that’s all.

I usually run with Shadows off, reflections none, shaders medium, postprocessing off, and everything else on high. Those seem to be the biggest burden on my hardware which is slightly less than yours in terms of CPU and GPU.

Oh, and Effect LOD being on in high activity areas makes a HUGE difference. If you turn it off at a boss fight or in WvW your frames will tank hard, regardless of hardware.

Maybe I’m a thorn in your perfection

That’s the nature of MMOs. You have so many people around you that you’re bound to hit FPS drops. I have a GTX 1080 and a 4960x (No, I did not spend a thousand dollars on a CPU. My brother did and he sent it to me thinking it was fried, a thousand is way too much to spend). I also have 16GB of RAM on an ASUS Rampage Extreme IV Black Edition. In some areas my FPS is 150+ in other areas it can dip as low as 30, spiking probably even worse in super dense zerg moments.

I don’t really think we have enough hardware to throw at the game to completely stabilize the FPS, that’s the downside to a big open world game.

Enabling VSYNC helps to alleviate the spiking, I have to use it anyway. The GPU pumps out too many frames and the screen tearing is horrible.

I’m on a 12 yr old mac and get between 20-35 FPS (with mid settings) and considering my comp’s age and the vid card is now 6.5 years old, I’m just happy I can run the game (booted in win7). It’s nice to know I got my money’s worth out of my system.

Yeah lol curtegg, there are other forums to promote overpriced hardware. (send us a screenshot of your settings in the middle of a crowded area and your mac specifications)
I tryed also the game for fun on a old dimension 9150 (from 2005) and probably score higher then your old mac, but why should i? It has nothing to do with the worth of that system.
Those systems still run gw2, but in no way comparable with current standards. Some people have also a Ford T and claiming it’s still running but how do they perform on the highway?

Now back to topic,
You have a 6800k (6 cores/12 threads) @3.4ghz turbo 3.6ghz.
But this is a k version, so meant to overclock, you pay for this “k” (to 4ghz with good air cooling or above with liquid)
I have a similar 6820hk (laptop) (4cores/8threads) @2.7ghz turbo 3.6ghz, i run @ 4ghz all cores (only the laptops power limitations prevent to go higher).

Now some measurements cpu and gpu load (vents are set for low noice and kick only really in around 75c and 85c).
I’ll give this as an example for people: 1. claiming gw2 is only cpu related 2. my pc is underperforming 3. I crash
You can only say something about a system when you measure things.
(A lot can go wrong which is not related to Anet, ex temp, power distribution, operating system settings, ddos attacks, providers restrictions, Nvidia settings,
some producents use even throttling as a standard as their system is not designed to meet even the normal chip specifications (i’’ll guess apple will do something similar to solve their gpu issues on the new pro) etc.)

Throttlestop for cpu monitoring and cpu register settings (co% gives core usage, FID clock of core :setting x +/- 100mhz), afterburner for gpu. Gsync on. Gpu gtx1070

First cpu @ 3Ghz GPU max overclock 2025 MHZ, rendering native
Cpu is the bottleneck, Gpu usage 50% and can hold his max overclock.

Second1 cpu @ 3Ghz GPU max overclock 2025 MHZ, rendering oversampling

Cpu still the bottleneck, Gpu usage 65% but struggles to hold the overclock. (note this is a laptop there are also power limitations)

Third cpu @ 4ghz GPU max overclock 2025 MHZ, rendering oversampling (native was gpu 70% usage, around 2025 Mhz)

Cpu usage lowers , Gpu is becoming the bottleneck with 82% usage and clock down to 1924MHz

I use throttlestop for this, the author of this tool has a nda with Intel for accessing non documented registers, but you better start with https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/24075/Intel-Extreme-Tuning-Utility-Intel-XTU-
Before you change anything, read some stuff about it. Also google for people with the same system as you. Current cpu’s can have something but know you can still do
something wrong if you don’t understand how to.

you can use http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/ to compare your system with other’s who have the same.

Anyway this thread should be in technical support and not here

I love that not a single person, not even OP has brought up the subject of internet speeds or network equipment. Also, are you using the 32 bit exe or the 64 bit version? And if you feel like it throw in the whole Nvidia vs ATI & Intel vs AMD arguements. Bottom line is there are a huge amount of variables that come into play.

Havensrayne ?
1. He’s not saying he has rubber banding or high ping peeks.
2. gtx1080 was only available when 64bit was already standard to download
3. What has Amd to do with his problem ?
There are a huge amount of variables come into play but this is already said.
