On my MSI laptop the game runs fine, but ever since release I have always seen strange symbols appearing in front of nearly every single item description. It also happens all over game menus.

For what ever reason, the game places a single strange character in front of each item commentary line. These are usual characters that no one would ever use in a normal sentence, like for example a special variation of capital A, with a tail attached to the right leg of the A. I suspect that perhaps these are characters that the game uses for formatting, that are some how being displayed, when they should be invisible.

It definitely has something to do with playing on a laptop, because when I play on a normal desktop pc, the issue does not appear (and every GW2 player I know doesn’t have the issue either, and they all play on desktop pc’s).

Are you perhaps using the ‘Large’ interface setting on the laptop, and not on the desktop? The large interface has several invalid letters, including replacing … with an accented capital E. It’s rather annoying, and has been reported before – the only workaround is to set your interface to normal or the largest size.

I have had the same issue, and I have been playing on a desktop. I only just found this post about it and it has been annoying me since release.

Changing the Interface Size to anything other than Large resolves the issue.
