Got to Tier 2(500,000 XP without dying) and watched the achievement XP count go up, then at around 430,000 XP I got a phone call and died , lol, silly

Well I then decided to be safe and rack up the 500,000 needed , like a kitten, this time the count stayed at 430,000 ish and never reset or moved. I managed at least 3 full level 80 levelling(254,000 each) .

So, is this a bug ? as I managed over 3/4 of a million XP without dying ,and never got the achievement ?

All I know is I completed the achievement yesterday, so it isn’t bugged for everyone. But I have seen many reports about this achievement being stuck, but I believe those reports were from some time ago.

Why would that be an exploit btw? You can only die while in combat (except for falling damage but well) and in combat you can’t use WP’s to travel. And almost on all maps there are no mobs near the portals (sort of safe entering zones) meaning that if you run to a portal to a different map, you should already be out of combat mode and out of danger.

In theory you could sit on a story step entrance for a quick teleport. They tend to be in safe areas, but close enough to enemies a determined player could abuse them. There might be other cases I can’t think of right now.

Wait, so this isn’t a bug?! It’s exploit prevention? Seriously? That’s disappointing. Anyways, it’s really easy to do just by spending an hour or so in Orr, following the zerg doing DEs. This achievement should be renamed to “Map Survivor”, or at least be noted that you have to stay on the same map.

I had tons of friends complaining about this when it was part of the monthly achievement. Everyone thought it was a bug, which was a logical conclusion to make IMO. The fact that it’s not… honestly, I think the achievement should be removed. If that much exploit protection needs to be put in place for a single achievement… it’s really disappointing.

You know, you run the risk of making the game a total pain for the non-cheaters if you are always gearing things towards the cheaters. That is a lot of experience to get in one sitting in one zone.

In fairness, I think the devs have demonstrated that they recognize the difficulty in finding that balance and are doing what (at least they think) is best to resolve it, but it’s an ongoing, iterative process.

That being said, if they care THAT MUCH about people cheating their way to this title, that had kitten well better mean that these titles will eventually MATTER for more than prestige. Because otherwise, man, nobody was ever gonna care and this was a problem that needed no fixing…

Oh my… just stop cry. Go to FrostGorge Sound, use an XP bost and kill every mob you see. In less than 2 hours you will have the achiev whitout risk.

Same, I was just levelling crafting on an alt and it just popped up. Didn’t expect that to happen, but it did.

Ah well, that achievement never worked properly anyway so I’m glad I got it out of the way.

This issue has hindered my playtime quite a bit… I was running around doing map completion, thinking I would be working on this and well… No! The only viable way to do it is to craft your gold away and hope you don’t DC.

Please remove this one-sit-down-one-area bs asap.

It wasn’t a problem in GW1, why is it a problem in GW2? You could do a boxing mission in GW1 and when you “died” you just got knocked down and could get back up, but if you couldn’t get back up in time you would die, so people would just map travel out… but it took a lot of micromanaging and planning to do. They didn’t implement this BS there, so why do it in GW2?

If this is intended behaviour, the tooltip/description on the achievement needs updating. It only references player death as a reason for it resetting and not any of the other reasons it resets.

Despaired Ranger: Crafted The Dreamer, lost range, lost GS condi damage for synergy.

Meh, I can think of one easy exploit that anyone can do right now, lots of exp, risk-free, it only requires 2 players both pressing 1 simple key.

Oh, just to add a little bit of irony to this, it involves with deaths.

So come on, you cannot block cheaters. If people intend to cheat, they will cheat their way through it, and there’s no way of stopping them.

Sure, you could apply something that could fix one issue, but sometimes that bring a bigger issue to other areas, now the question is, is it worth it?

Another terrible implementation ANet… You’re expecting people to abuse by exiting zones and ALT+F4ing? Man, this really really hurts the regular player a lot more than preventing XP gain abuse. I guess what ANet wants me to do is sit in one zone for a few HOURS, grinding mobs and DE’s to get the XP. Don’t worry though, during the process I’ll have diminishing returns on all the loot I gain too. Grind-free game, my kitten

I didn’t even notice it has this reset like the monthly survivor had back then. It takes roughly 30-60 minutes to get this without boosters by doing events in level 80 areas.

Saw people complain about it so I figured I see how long it would take. Ran around FrostGorge for about two and a half hours. That is with out any boosts running, watching some TV here and there, and reporting a pack of the old school bots. I almost died around 480,000 do the a large pack of wolves that became a very large pack of wolves.

They could of made achievement a lot worse by actually making a death lock out the achievement all together.

I just wish it had a title that came with it.

I’m not sure I personally understand the problem. Why do you want the difficulty of an achievement toned down? If you get it from … doing nothing specific, it’s hardly interesting. An achievement you have to actively focus on and carefully pursue makes for a more genuine and literal “achievment” in my opinion.

I personally liked it when it was a monthly achievement after I “understood” it (minus it not scaling to level, making the difficulty relative to player level). Though the end result of the long-term one is that I still wound up completing it without focusing on it. I believe I got it in Straits of Devastation no less, not even a full lv80 zone (if not, then it was Malchor’s Leap).

I like the current implementation (though I do agree with taking it off the Monthly despite me having liked it).

Have no problem with your current implementation, just wished when you hovered over it in the achievement section the tooltip would give you a hint of what was needed(a short version would do like "No death or map change, in one session ")

how does a player switch location when there’s no way you could teleport when you are in combat mode? Can’t you have a marker on a player when they are down and if they were to alt + f4 or something it will still keep them in game? like WvW

I don’t see how this is punishing the proper players to not use a single way point. This isn’t a new title and it worked well in gw1, why change it?

I remember reading the original “it’s a bug” post because I had just gotten stuck at 489k after switching a map. After reading this lastest “update”, my first thought is they couldn’t figure out how to fix it and have decided to make it a feature.

Us Rangers have grown somewhat accustomed to that approach.

I am a casual player myself, but I do not have any problems whatsoever with this: I understand that this achievement is not for me. That’s okay, that’s the price I pay for being casual.

Never even thought of that. Yeah that could be an exploit then, but still it’s only an Achievement, it doesn’t even have a title bound to it. If someone decides to get it that way, I wouldn’t mind because you can’t do anything with it.

Also I got mine in Cursed Shore unintentionally when I was doing some event farming, apparently was there long enough :P So that might be a good place to try and get it!

Hmm, I have done it. I actually zone into other areas with enemies chasing me often, I even waypoint that way some times. Catching 4-5 adds and waypointing before they hit you is a great way to avoid a death.

I got this the other day in under 2 hours from completing Timerline Falls, so its not that tough.

I really think that this needs to be changed to allow map changes. It’s just an achievement without a title, so it’s something that only you’ll see, and there’s very little motivation to exploit it.

Plus, it would take more effort to farm enemies at a story quest start point than it does to get it legit.

going from 0 to 400 in most crafts cost between 10 and 12 gold, depending how much stuff you already have(I know as I have all but 1 craft) , I might do my tailoring in that case , but that defeats the object of “a survivor” lol

I don’t want it “toned down” or to get it by crafting. Jeez last time I checked the crafting stations didn’t attack me. I would like to be able to get it by not getting killed by mobs. I would like to get it through normal game play. Doing map completion in a zone, completing hearts, doing DE’s etc. If I finish the zone I’m in I would like to go to the next one. Not just hang out some zone I finished already killing mobs in a quick respawn “safe” area. I would like to feel at the end that I actually earned it by avoiding dying during normal game play. That said, there is no cool reward from it that I know of and I don’t really care about getting it enough to bother with it. I’m just disappointed that zoning or logging out for the evening is dying.

Ok, I see what you did there. The discussion was about porting or using Waypoints while in combat. You claimed it could be done; when I called you on it, you change it to being chased without being hit…that isn’t combat and frankly places no one in any real danger.

Pro Tip on “a great way to avoid death” in your scenario? Don’t run into areas where you get 4-5 adds chasing you.

No, it’s not... Just complete a map zone and you’ll likely get it, especially on a higher-level character doing a lower-level zone. I hadn’t even realized I had completed this until I noticed it was marked as completed for me.

But I guess if you die a lot in exploration PvE it might pose a challenge.

edit: Well, maybe if your game time is in pretty small amounts here and there it could be out of reach temporarily. Wait for the weekend, I guess, then and just tackle a zone and own it like a boss.

I honestly didn’t intend for moving goal posts, my second post was more of a “this is what I’ve done” proving you were correct that I wasn’t in combat. Wait, so this achievement (that gives 10 points – same as reading all the hints) is considered so important that punishing some would-be exploiters justifies erasing all progress for players who simply moved to another map because they didn’t have anything to do in the previous one, or who got momentarily disconnected due to some internet issue? Wow.

I’ve seen Arena Net developers describe this “reset without death” as a bug. Now you’re telling us it’s deliberate? Or is that just a “PR fix” to the bug (“let’s pretend it’s a ‘feature’ we had planned all along; we can blame it on ‘cheaters’ to make us look tough”) ?

P.S. – The way most MMOs deal with players trying to exploit disconnection mechanics is simply to keep their character in the game world (and vulnerable to damage) for 20 seconds or so after disconnection. Wouldn’t that make a bit more sense than simply resetting the achievement despite the fact that that the character did not die…?

P.P.S. – My issue isn’t that I desperately want those 10 achievement points (I already have them – I got the achievement without even trying, just doing some dungeon). My issue is with this kind of attitude, that seems to permeate GW2 – especially in changes made after launch – where “punishing cheaters” seems to justify inconveniencing everyone else, even when the (supposed) “cheating” didn’t actually affect anyone negatively. Absolutely no one would be hurt by not resetting the achievement when people disconnect or move to a different zone. If it says “experience without death”, then it should only reset on death, period.

So AreanaNet devoted programming and resources to ensure that a “determined” potentially abusive player (and I might add resourceful since this possible abuse scenario never occurred to me) could not receive this achievement and in doing so inconvenienced thousands of players who just want to play the game?

This smacks of the Ancient Karka Chest distribution and once again just seems extremely indicative of terribly misplaced priorities. This is getting quite disturbing.

I am curious about something though. Could any of those programming cycles have been used to prevent real abuse such as teleporting across the map, flying over keep walls, hiding in rocks to use siege, making millions off of the earlier Precursor exploit? Just curious…

Looks like Arena Net hasn’t quite mastered the art of the “PR bug fix” yet.

If you’re going to pass off a bug as a “feature”, make sure that presenting it as a feature doesn’t hurt your image even more than admitting it’s a bug.

I think we’re missing the point here – the issue is not with the silly steps taken to avoid abuse ( for an achieve that most of us get by mistake while crafting ), but the fact that there is not an adequate description of the achieve, so players end up wasting time here thinking it is bugged. Fix the tool tip, and use the saved time to improve the game.

Save up your mats, and 400 two crafting disciplines. I couldn’t do it fighting either. I’m physically unable to make it through a sitting that long (not to mention my laptop would melt the wood desk).

I would like to add my voice to the crowd of others to suggest that the ‘mouseover’ text for this achievement needs to mention that the counter resets upon zoning
