The Event clearly states that I must slay the Champion Risen Gorilla… yet said Gorilla is actually only a Veteran.

Either it is a typo, or the event is spawning the wrong gorilla.

It has been like this for quite some time now. I have sent a bug report or two about it in the past.

Does it count as a champ? For dailies for instance?
