Hi. So I’ve scoured the forums and googled a ton for one of the issues I have, but have not found anything remotely like it anywhere. Also, I have recently (last couple months) had a significant increase in crashes of my client, sometimes with errors generated and sometimes, nothing at all. So I’m going to post a numbered list of issues I’ve had with some description of each in hopes that someone can shed some light on or help me in any way to understand what is going on and possibly fix it. This may get a little long, but thanks in advance for reading and any suggestions.

My comp:
MacBook pro 15" late 2011
2.2 ghz intel core i7
8gb ram
AMD radeon hd 6750m 512mb
Os X 10.7.5 (all updates are up-to-date)

1. Since Mac beta client launch or shortly thereafter, I have had this crazy issue of whenever my MagSafe power cable is knocked out, I get booted from the character I’m logged in at and sent back to the character select screen with a generic error of “the client has lost connection with the log in server, please wait and try again.” This is just the gist. This happens about 95% of the time I disconnect my power cable on purpose or by accident. It happens slightly less in the last month, but that has been replaced by other problems. It’s not as consistent anymore for some reason, which definitely leads me to believe it’s something client related. That combined with the fact that I CANNOT create the same issue on my hubs MacBook pro with retina display nor my friends computer (same as my hubs). And also, my computer does not lose Internet connectivity anywhere else (websites still load, client downloads continue, as do downloads for other games and random content). Lastly, if the disconnect does not occur upon power cable disconnect, it will about 80% of the time occur when I reconnect my power cable. Of course, this seems to have improved slightly in the last month, but it still happens often enough to be REALLY annoying and inconvenient.[it is not my router, not one other device on my network is affected by this]

2. Completely random client crashes. So, since launch, I have had issues with this (even during beta weekends, but they waned and flowed as to how often). I had minor crashing issues on the pc client, but it only got worse on the Mac beta client. I understand it’s BETA, so errors and crashes are to be expected, but it sometimes gets to the point of unplayable randomly. I have other friends who play on the Mac client and for every 1 crash they have (which is practically never), I’ve had about 100. This is no exaggeration, they almost never crash, but I crash at least once daily, most days! I used to just have random back to desktop crashes and I’d get an option to send Mac an error report, sometimes not. But more recently (last month or 2), I get serious errors, as noted by the error box. I have seen a few of these come across on the forums, but nothing that helps me. The most recent of these includes the C0000005 error completely random; running around the world, mid-fight or jp in WvW, or just sitting in LA, sometimes I’m shuffling inventory, sometimes chatting, sometimes when I’m doing absolutely nothing at all like when I take a 2 min afk to get a drink or check a text message, I see this happen all the time now. In the last 3 days, I’ve had these crashes about 8 times at least. I’ve stopped counting, it becomes habit to force quit application and restart. None of my mac friends have this problem! Typically, after these type of crashes, I have a very difficult time getting back into the game: extended load times on logging in, loading the character select screen (it takes about 2 mins for the graphics and text to load), and forget getting logged onto a character, that takes up to 5 mins or I sometimes have to force quit the client and try again.

Using 2posts, apparently, I’m too loquacious!

3. Also completely random log in server disconnects. The error always references some firewall or setting, but I can assure you that once these errors occurred, I triple checked all setting and have even gone so far as to disable ALL firewalls, including on my router. And same issue! I am the only one again! My hubs who plays on the same network as me, never has any connection issues. And this has gotten worse also! And this just boots me back to the character select screen, it rarely crashes the client itself, and I can usually just log back on without restarting the client. Lol the known camera bug used to be an issue every time forcing me to restart the client, but now only rarely when this happens.

4. Mouse targetting fails! My last issue that has gotten really bad in the last month or so. I can be playing just fine, then suddenly, my mouse targeting just quits. I can only target baddies using tab (or any keyboard set key) or by auto-attacking (which sometimes grabs the wrong guy). Npcs can’t be targeted either, I just have to run up and hit F and hope it gets the right guy. WvW is impossible like this! None of the in-game settings fixes this at all, only a full-client restart. The bug persists despite logging onto different characters. It happens randomly, sometimes after way pointing, sometimes transferring zones, sometimes switching characters, sometimes it was working one second and then not the next.

Troubleshooting steps I have tried without success:
Deleting the contents of the gw2 folder
Resetting any memory setting on the Mac via Mac forums possible VRAM, etc.
Disabling ALL power saving features
Disabling ALL security features Including on my modem & router (works the same enabled or disabled)
ZERO anti-virus software to obstruct the connection or ports
Memory purges
basics (restart comp, restart client, Internet speed tests, check connections on modem, router, comp)
Called my Internet service provider to ask if there were any issues and I’ve even had service guys here 3times since launch!

I have tried almost everything! Well, short of upgrading my system OS and reinstalling the game (I’m on a limited monthly bandwidth connection and no, I have not gone over, nor have I been throttled).

So, any thoughts? From anyone?

Thanks again for taking the time to read this novella and thank you for any thoughts or suggestions offered. This has been going on for some time now and I may have missed listing some things i’ve tried or a symptom of what is happening, but you get the win idea here. Thanks all!

I have been having the same connection problems since the January update, every ten or so minutes I will lose connection to the server. The only way I can fix it is by restarting my airport wireless and then I can play for an hour or two before the next disconnect. I have an early 2011 mbp with the same specs are yours.

You get bonus points for using the word, “loquacious”.

Can you try playing the game using a direct Ethernet cable connection between your laptop and router. Disable wireless for this test. This will help to determine if the problem is your wireless network or elsewhere.

Also, is your laptop overheating? Ensure that it has breathing room both above and below it. Considering using the in-game graphics option to limit the frame rate to 60 or 30 to ease the workload on the GPU and see if you experience fewer crashes.

I also noticed that you’re running OS 10.7.5. Consider upgrading to 10.8.

Thanks for the responses! (and the bonus points) ;p

I do try to watch my system temp, but considering the inconsistencies with the crashes from a fresh start to the game (barely warmed up), to running a marathon play session, it’s pretty much the same; meaning, I crash just after starting or sometimes after an hour, rarely, I can make it several hours before the first crash.

As for network, I have considered trying on an Ethernet cable, but my modem & router are in a difficult place to sit for any extended amount of time to fully test this… Someday soon, I do hope to be able to do this, but considering the fact that my husband who plays on both a pc and a MacBook pro with retina display on the same wireless network without issue…. Unless it is in fact the wireless unit in my comp, then I’m screwed lol.

And lastly, I have considered upgrading, but I’ve been warned that I may lose several of my applications due to possible incompatibility. (cannot replace) Or just bad upgrading problems (as noted on Mac forums)… I can’t afford to lose my programs or my data… Yeah yeah back up, but sadly, my husband took the only hard drive for that to work. Rock and a hard place for these first world problems of mine lol

Has anyone else upgraded and had 80% or better of their issues resolved? If I could find any proof that it could fix it, I’d buy the upgrade immediately.

Thanks again

Sorry to post again, yes, I have set the frame limiter to 30 (rarely get above 30 anyway… Ooohhhh 33 fps), but I actually hasn’t helped with any of the issues.

First (and you already said it before I): back up. You can’t use “… can’t afford to lose my programs or my data” as an excuse for not updating to OS X 10.8 while at the same time not doing regular back-ups of your stuff. Hard drives are stupidly cheap. Buy one that’s at least twice the size of your Mac Book’s drive. More is better. I prefer Firewire, but USB is the cheaper alternative. Set up Time Machine and plug in the back-up drive at least once a day.

Scolding over!

You noted that you lose connection when your power cord is unplugged. How is the condition of your battery? It’s possible that your Mac is dropping the wireless connection to a low-power state when it detects inadequate power from the battery.

Is your wireless connection encrypted? (WEP / WPA) That could also be causing a problem. Encrypting and decrypting data fast enough to keep up with an online game may be too much for your Mac to handle. Is your husband’s Mac Book the same as yours?

Lol yeah, I deserve the scolding, I need my own dedicated hard drive for backup, but my hubs work takes priority over my recreation. But yes, that is a near future plan! I tried to backup the other day on a spare, but it was formatted for windows… Fail! <.<

So, you bring up some good points. My battery is good, ran all hardware tests, a-ok. Also, I calibrate it per apple instructions every few months for good measure. It lasts for several hours on full brightness over wireless doing everything but games. WoW could hold up for over an hour, this is more intense lol… But way better. I had thought about the low-power state disabling the wireless, but tested that while game running transferring data, opened a browser and kept loading pages and uplugged unit. The game d/c’d, but never had an issue with websites loading, even videos that had never been cached. Also ran speed test while testing this theory in the past. No drops! And also, as mentioned, the battery disconnect issue seems to happen much less recently. Only about 40% of the times now when the cable is unplugged do I disconnect. (roughly since after the last frost & flame update, although, not sure if it is actually related)

I’m actually getting more error codes and random crashes now. Codes C0000005, C00000094 for crashes with error reports sent to anet automatically. And since my last post, a ton of odd d/c’s that put me back to character select screen. My last error like that was code 7:11:3:189:101. That one happens a lot. A few times I get the firewall error code blah. And today, I had a nasty crash with a “serious error” again, but a brand new code or file listed: lockedRect.pBits. Never had that before!

As for the encryption, that might be possible, never thought of that because I’ve never had an issue with it. But yes, my hubs has a newer MBP with retina display. But I guess all setups are not equal, my friend had an mbp of same model as mine with 4mb ram before and never had any disconnects… Ever! So it may corroborate your suggestion as it was over a dsl connection, rather than cable Internet.

Oh it is all so crazy! I figured to list all symptoms recent and not as current in case they were connected in any way. If only we knew what exactly those error codes meant lol. New google project. Thanks again for fresh thoughts!

Update (this will be long):

So just in case this was happening for anyone else I’m going to post an update to my issues.

I figured out why I was disconnecting and getting code 7:11:3:189:101. I found out that I was having an issue with my MBP switching from a 5ghz connection to a 2.4ghz connection randomly. The swap happened so smoothly, I never noticed it in anything else before, but upon trying to view my log files for gw2, I tripped on my console log and saw that my disconnects were occurring with a network issue that involved a new Mac address, low and behold, I confirmed it on my husbands’ MBPr (had to wait until he was asleep and left it unlocked for me to steal it for a few mins… Work computers bah). It took more effort for me to find the connection swap on his, but I duplicated my disconnect issue.

Fix: if you run an 802.11n wireless router with dual band, make sure that both bands have a different name (I.e. 5ghz = my-Internet-5 and 2.4ghz = my-Internet-2). Yes, the 5ghz doesn’t have the staying power to push through a lot of walls (or pipes for that matter), but it helps free your comp from interference of other devices. 2.4ghz goes the distance. Also, if you do that, make sure your comp is only registered on one of those network names (you can still print to printers registered on the other if setup right).

Good news though, I have done this for mine and moved my comp all over my house and haven’t lost connection yet. Lol, I don’t even have lag when my hubs hijacks the Internet for Netflix anymore

As for the WvW disconnecting and errors… I cannot confirm this one 100% yet as I’ve only tested it briefly and my server is now the green team (lol could be completely random coincidence), but I have also adjusted my router with QoS settings for gw2.

I can’t find the specific place, but I saw that gw2 needs unrestricted access to 4ports: 80, 443, 6112, 6600. I set up for both inbound and outbound unrestricted with high priority. Tonight I was able to be apart of a 2 huge Zerg clash of about 30 vs 50 and I didn’t have the awful lag, what, dead issue… I knew when I was going to die and I was even able to pull off a heal and still run more than 3frames per second. So far so good. Yes, my WvW graphics settings are fairly low, but I saw it all, including the red circles lol. (limit = medium, quality = low).

I know not every router has QoS settings, but I believe you can use port forwarding to your comps ip address (requires static ip), but I cannot confirm anything about that since I have not tried it. And I don’t know how it works with more than one comp (which is why I went with QoS settings). But I did read an official post about it somewhere. Sorry, I really can’t remember where.

I hope this helps someone fix any issues they are having. Thanks again for the suggestions Todd, you really got me thinking deeper again considering I was at my wits end with this. Win win win!
