I logged into my GW2 account today for the first time from my wife’s computer. I realized a while later, that I wasn’t prompted for account authorization. Now, this is okay from my home network, but I could see this being an issue for anyone that frequently games from a public network.

It appears to me that the authentication is keyed to the network IP. Anyone logging in from a public IP would have the same IP, and as… dedicated… as some of these hackers are, it wouldn’t surprise me if some of them camp at various network hot spots, hoping to catch a glimpse of someones log in information and bypass the authentication by using the same network.

Or maybe I’m just paranoid. (Just because I’m paranoid doesn’t mean that they are not out to get me!)

If you were on a public network/cyber cafe etc, you wouldnt get the same IP, due to the proxy server being used amongst other things.

I have a few questions, if you people can answer for me.

1) I have set static IP settings in my laptop so as to prevent my IP address from changing every so often. However, my IP address still managed to change. Is it because I have to do the same in my modem/router?

2) How do I delete/remove past IPs that I authorized from my account? I don’t want there to be a huge list of IPs by the end of the month. Thanks.

Thanks in advance.

Lists all the current IP’s authorized on your account.

As for your initial question, even with a static IP, its a good idea to make sure your router knows it.

The game makes me email authenticate every time, event tho I am logging in from the exact same IP address. This is very annoying. I heard there is an option to make it do this, but I never enabled this and don’t see any way to disable it. Please advise.

Keep in mind email authenticate is there to help keep your account safe. From people posted there is a way to disable it. But currently once you disable it there is no way to turn it back on.

My self I would never take the chance just to make logging in more easy.

Every time it gives you the option to Allow or Deny access there should be a check box that says “remember this address” or something like that. Be thankful for this feature, Anet’s database is not very secure.

Unless you have a static IP address from your internet provider. The IP address you get from your provider will change every so often. There is no way around it unless they offer static IP address.

Setting up a static IP on your local area network A.K.A your router/computers. Won’t help get past the guildwars2 email authentication if that’s what your looking for.

Cause they are seeing your real IP address your providers gave you. Not the IP address your router gave your laptop or what you gave it.

Actually there are many people that have had a lot of success with forcing their router to give a static IP for this game. There have been a fair amount of reports from people on dynamic IP’s where their ISP changed the IP every 12-24 hours, and the player has to continually authorize every login.

Once the IP was set in the router, or even through the tcp/ip settings on their NIC, they reported that they’ve never had to authorize it since.

I’m having to authenticate via email any attempt to log into the game, my account and the forum. It’s getting very tiresome having to do this and I gather it’s because I’m on a dynamic IP.

I end up leaving my email account open when I’m doing anything to do with GW2 and end up with endless arena net emails. As far as security measures go I don’t think it’s particularly useful because I’m sure that anyone who is able to get your login details for GW2 can probably get the same for my email account as well.

At the very least I’d like the option to turn it off.

Hello there, I have a bit of a problem on my hands which isnt gamebreaking but is a bit fo concern.

It involves the Authenication. I know how the process goes, you click the link in the email that i’ve been sent, get the page and all the information is there, click Remember this network and allow access etc etc. But the problem I have is that after every 4th or 5th time I login, I have to authenticate again, even though i’ve already done it and remembered the network. Upon clicking the link, I find that the information is completely different, the Address, City and Region, except for my country, which always remains at GB.

This worries me because i’m getting cities such as Reading and Milton Keyes which i’ve never heard of in my life (can’t confirm if these cities or false) and I can’t find this problem anywhere else on this forum.

I know that I am not hacked, as I have gone through the procedures and have found nothing but I fear that I may be hacked some time in the future if this problem persists every week. I have turned the forums as it is the only option I have really. I hope to hear some form of response be it on my end or not.

GoingJuffoWup

I’m not sure if this will help but here as some snapshots of the emails.

You probably have the same issue i used to have. Your’s and my ISP is routing you through different hubs when you connect to the game servers, and since it keeps changing, the game doesnt recognise whats happening.

I live in rural north wales, so my ISP just directs me wherever it wants to, but ive implemented a system on my side that pretty much locks the IP down. It’s similar to a proxy but doesnt incur all the side effects.

You could try fixing your IP in your router settings, or your TCP/IP settings on your NIC. There are a good amount of players that reported that it solved their issues which were similar to your and mine.

Hi everyone, and hopefully an ANet employee. I’ll preface this post with an apology, in case this has already been posted, and requested. I checked the stickies to see if there was anything on this, and I didn’t see something similar to what I would like to have done with the Account Authorization.

I would very much like to have less e-mails pertaining to someone trying to log into my account, from a computer across the world from where I normally log in from. So can you please add an option in the Account Management to allow us to choose which countries we might be willing to allow access to our account from. I understand that may sound confusing (since I can easily confuse people), but an example of what I mean is;
From a pull-down menu, I choose Canada as the ONLY country my account is allowed to be accessed in. (There could also be an inverted option, to choose which countries we would like to be automatically denied, which for most would likely be China, since all the authorize account access emails that i get are asking for someone in China to have access).
Now that I chose which country I allow or not allow access, you then ONLY send me e-mails for authorization when my account is attempting access in the chosen country. So if someone in Vancouver (I live in Toronto) tries to log into my account, I could deny that, or allow it if I ended up visiting Vancouver and wanted to play gw2. At least then, we can automatically deny locations where it is VERY unlikely we will be playing gw2 from.

If you are interested in this idea as well, please keep this post alive so it can hopefully be adopted.
Thanks everyone for reading.

Because hackers proxy into all sort of “legitimate” countries, I don’t think this is a good or viable idea at all.

Update: I just received a second authentication email from arenanet, 8 minutes distance between the two. I however tried to log in about 20 times… so i think i should have gotten about 20 emails.

A log-in attempt from the following location is currently awaiting your authorization.

Address: ************
City: *************
Region: ************
Country: ************

This location is approximated based on information provided by your Internet Service Provider. If in doubt, deny the request and try again.

If you are certain this log-in attempt was not made by you, then someone else knows your log-in credentials and you should change your password immediately via Account Management.

For security purposes, we alert you each time your account is accessed from an unrecognized location. To authenticate this log-in attempt, please click the link below:

I kinda feel bad about it, but my problem is the exact opposite of what most people ask for on this thread.
I have the email authentication activated, and I make sure I don’t check the box to remember my IP. Maybe it sounds stupid, but I like the fact that a confirmation is requested every time I try to log in.

My issue is that I don’t have to confirm every time I try to log in. Some days, I will open and close the game several time, and each and every one of them, I have to confirm my IP. Good. But, some other days, I don’t even have to confirm anything, despite not checking any box, and despite changing my IP address. Bad.

So, question is : why ? Am I causing some serious overload because every time Anet has to send me a mail ? Of course that’s not it, but it feels weird for me that sometimes my security looks good (If Anet asks me to confirm my IP, I feel safe), but other times it looks like anybody could login into my account without me knowing it.

So, once again, I feel a bit bad to ask for something that everyone in this thread think is annoying, but well, I feel safer this way. Maybe I should add that I’m not necessarily on a dynamic IP. If I turn off my router for several hours, most of the time, my IP is changed to a new one. But when I leave it on, I always have the same IP.

Thanks for any answer on that.

edit : for example, right now, when I log in, no confirmation is required. I don’t really like that.

I’m consistently getting log in attempts in my email apparently from China. Every time I go to Deny it the web page gives me an error.

What’s the point of having this authentication portal when I keep getting log in attempts from China, when I live in Florida, and when it never works to begin with? I would think it would auto deny seeing as how I haven’t allowed a single one ankittenep getting attempts….FROM CHINA…..not suspicious at all I’m sure.

I’m also having problems with the E-Mail system, but this is mainly due to the inability to deny any requests to my account. (I am still able to play GW2 in relative safety)

I do receive the e-mail, then when I head to deny access to that location the site errors out. Pictures are included as an attachment.

Hey guys,

I havent played for like a month or so due to school….

All of the sudden i got a email authentication tonight from “Kashi” where the heck that might be.

Anyhow, i got no spyware or malware, using McAfee and never had problems…

Also i find it a bit weird that after such a long time of not being active i got the email… So how sure are you guys that the database isnt messing up?

Changed all my passwords just to be sure… but ya, i find it very odd that after such a time of inactiveness i got the email… So check into the database see if it isnt sending “false” emails or to the wrong email adresses… Software tends to mess up a lot ..

So I originally thought this idea was good, but a few days after it came out it has just been annoying me.

So when I first authorized it it told me my city (which was correct) and I clicked “Remember” and continued. However, the next time I log in, it comes up with waiting for authorization every time, and I have to do the same steps every time, even though I am clicking the “remember” box.

It’s also worrying as a few times it’s told me I’m in a completely different location (one of which was halfway across the country). This has happened 2 or 3 times which is quite worrying as someone from that location could easily hack into my account.

So this email Authorization is happening every time and it’s quite fustrating having to head onto my emails every time to play the game.

Any help?
Thanks.

EDIT: I also have to do email Authorization every time I come on the forums as well, which annoys me further.

I’m sorry that you’re experiencing this inconvenience. The answer may be the large pool of IP addresses used by your Internet Service Provider (as mentioned in the forum post above). So where in the past IP locations generally appeared nearby, they seem to be spreading out a bit and someone in Chicago may see “an access attempt” (by them ) in Florida. A player in the UK was getting IPs that were listed as being 400 miles distant from him, and yet they were all legitimate, and all reflected his own legitimate access attempts.

If this is a considerable inconvenience, I think it would be helpful to gather information about your particular situation. Consider filing a ticket and provide:

  • The name of your ISP
  • Your location
  • Various IP addresses that you are asked to validate

Alternately, have you considered using Mobile Two-Factor Authentication, instead?

Hello,

I’m logging in from a new IP address tonight. The game client is waiting for me to authenticate the log-in, but I never got an e-mail.

I thought maybe it was an issue with my e-mail provider, but e-mail authentication for this web site works just fine, so the issue is likely on your end.

Hi there,

I’m here to give some feedback after my last message (7 days ago, still on this page, here is the address : https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/account/Authentication-Questions-Concerns-merged/399749)

So, after I posted, for an entire week things went perfectly. Every time I tried to log in, I was sent an email to confirm my authentication. Even if I logged only once, or thirteen times a day, I was prompted to confirm my IP.

And today, all of a sudden, no confirmation is required. I can log in to the forum, or the game, without having to confirm anything. That’s quite weird I must say, since my IP keeps on changing everyday, and I’ve never checked the box to remember my location. Any clues about that ?

If someone from Anet needs any information, please ask.
Cheers.

Why don’t you just validate from MAC address?

Because that doesn’t provide as much security.

There is no protection beyond not knowing a person’s mac address. Once they know it, you’d be screwed.

However, IP addresses, along with the person not knowing it, has the added measure of directing traffic where to go. So if you fake your IP pretending to be from Florida, the server will send responses to Florida, not your mother’s basement in Iowa, where your poor hacking attempt is actually located.

Paper is fine. Nerf rock.

I was having issues with the e-mail, so I removed it. However, now that I think I’ve resolved the issue, I’d like to have the option to enable it again. With my cell phone connected to my e-mail all I’d have to do is authenticate from it. I don’t however, want to NEED to rely on my phone to log on via the Mobile app. It’s like the Authenticator key card from SWTOR, I have to rummage around looking for the thing or else there’s no possible way to log on. Why not a couple of security questions for the account? Just some thoughts..
