Had the same problem, had to do it a few times. It seems that there’s a time limit on entering the code to link it and if you don’t enter the first code in a timely matter, the second code ends up just refreshing the page. Took like like 3-4 tries to get it right the first time.

Is it better to out-monster the monster or to be quietly devoured?

I tried it several times earlier but it just kept refreshing, however when I tried it again a second ago it worked first time, so it is working now but I have no idea why it wouldn’t do it before.

Thanks for the help anyway guys

Hello! I have linked my google app to my GW2 account successfully.

My problem is that neither the game client OR logging in here has ever asked me for a number from it.

I have tried un-linking and re-linking the authenticaor with no luck. Is there some option that I am missing? The only option I see when I go to the security area of my account is an option to unlink it.

Thanks!

I have the same issue and have been hacked 3 times now. Would sure be nice if it asked me for the code when login into to game or website. In fact why is it you can disable the authenticator right from the login screen?!

As the title says. I was logging into gw2 and waiting for the email authentication but the e-mail never arrive after several attempts. (I’am using using hotmail.) Had to disable the authenticator to login. This is the first time this problem was encountered as i usually receive the e-mail almost immediately. So i’ll appreciate if u guys can look into this problem.

I’m experiencing the same issue, not entirely sure what it is. I received an authentication e-mail when I logged into the forums to make this post, but I’ve not received an authentication in the three attempts I have made to log into my account.

Can we get some clarification on the reasoning behind this.

Hello

I was going to set up the e-mail authentication and all that shows on the security section of my account is the option to do it on the mobile app.

Down below it just says my current logins…

I remember doing an e-mail verification but I thought that was just for the forum? Or is the e-mail authentication already in place for me?

Thanks

My authenticator used to work just fine – nice double security. Now I’m logged into my account without it asking for the authenticator code. My account says I’m still supposed to use it. I haven’t played in a month. What’s been going on? Why would it suddenly stop working – what happened in the patches while I was away? And, most importantly, when are they going to FIX it???

Had the same problem. Just started receiving authentication e-mails from my attempts to login from over an hour ago, though the time stamp of the e-mail was not from when I received the e-mail, but when I tried to login. So, it’s possible that certain e-mail providers are having some sort of slow down.

If you are connecting through a known/authorized IP, it doesn’t ask you for authentication code.

how do i fix this so it asks me every time no matter where i am logging in at? I like the little extra security it provides.

What they may not understand is the psycology behind having the perception of broken security. I used to have my CC info stored for easy purchase of gems. No way Ill be doing that with this login system. What does that mean? It means sales of convenience will not happen. If I have to type in my CC info every time it makes me pause, which is sales 101 for no sale.

The authenticator asks you for the code when someone without your IP trys to log onto your account.

When you allow your IP to be recognized by Anet or remembered by Anet the authenticator does too and does not ask you for your secret code.

“The authenticator asks you for the code when someone without your IP trys to log onto your account.
When you allow your IP to be recognized by Anet or remembered by Anet the authenticator does too and does not ask you for your secret code.”

Well, that would explain the behaviour but:
1. I have logged into my account from many different places ( friends house, work, bar) and never have been asked so this is either not working correctly or is not true.
2. It should ask once in a while to remind me that it is working and remind me that it exists.
3. I think it should have asked at least once. It has never ever asked.

I’ll check into this. I know once an IP is accepted, the authenticator won’t ask you for another approval, and going to a friend’s house may call into the same IP. However, it’s worth asking about, so I will!

Ok, just a little update.

I just logged in from one of my servers that I know I have never used. I was VERY PLEASED to see that it did request my login information.

I guess that it is possible that all the other places I logged in from I had already added to this mysterious approval list.

I do feel better but I would love to see an option to force it to ask me for the code every time and some way to edit this list of approved IPs.

Thanks for everyone’s input.

Ok, I checked with Security, and these situations appear to be a simple misunderstanding of how the authenticator works.

When you log into an IP (or an IP range — a cluster of nearby IP addresses) you will receive a message asking you to verify that IP as “accepted.” This is commonly called “whitelisting” the IP.

If you log into an IP or IP range in the future, you will not get a message because you’re already said “This IP is ok — allow my account to be accessed from this IP.”

In the future, we will allow you to always require approval of an IP, even if it’s you logging in for the fourth time in a day from the same computer at the same location. That will be your choice, and many people recommend that you do choose that option once it becomes available.

But right now, in beta form, the authenticator “whitelists” the IPs you approve and then does not ask you to approve them again.

cant hackers spoof that IP address that the authenticator now thinks is ok? doesnt this white listing negate the protection of the authenticator all together?

I set up the google authenticator and everything worked just fine. Every time I tried to log in, I was asked for my 6-digit code (regardless of the location I was logging in from). I changed devices (iPad to iPhone), had to disable my authenticator via my account page, and then re-enable the authenticator in order to get a new code to input into my iPhone so I can use that device instead of the iPad. Since changing the device I use to authenticate, I have not been asked for my 6-digit code when logging into the game. This is very disturbing, as when I check my account settings (via this website) I am told that mobile authentication is turned on.

I would really appreciate having to enter my 6-digit code every time I log into the game.

If someone would like to explain this one for me? I have authenticated the email after a lot of stress of changing passwords to protect against hacking. So i authenticated the account now that i can post on here. However, whenever attempting to log in through the launcher i am still being asked to authenticate. Upon trying to authenticate again it keeps telling me that it has failed. How am i supposed to play the game i payed £40 for, when i can’t even log in thanks to a security measure i wasn’t told about. :/

I have been trying to use Google Authenticator (GA) but the QR code does not work. It is not a big deal as manually keying in the code into GA works too; however this is not mentioned anywhere in the setup instructions (yes, spoonfeeding is expected here as IT things have a way of going south when instructions are sometimes not strictly followed).

My main issue is after a few days, the GW2 profile in my GA on my iPhone self resets, wiping out the profile I have setup for GW2. I have already had to manually unlink the 2 factor authentication process a few times.

I would love to use the GW2’s 2FA but not when the app resets itself whenever it feels like it. I have reinstalled the app a number of times and being an iPhone user, there is a VERY short list of things I can try to troubleshoot the problem (is it the app, the phone or something else?).

A few people have asked about which physical authenticator would be likely to work with Guild Wars 2. According to our Security Team, any configurable RFC 6238 device should be compatible.

Which is cool in theory – only problem is that I couldn’t find a programmable token yet, they’re all pre-initialized. So the GO 6 and so on I mentioned earlier wouldn’t work. A Yubikey seems to be the only option as of now (and a cheap one), but it requires a client component (KeikoTerada made a good post on how to actually use it, see here).
Any RFC 6238 comliant token could be used, including Blizzard’s authenticator and so on, if the secret could be changed manually in account management.

When will the option to unforget the net(ip etc) will be available ? We want to log in using the authenticator all the time, plz .
We know u said its working all time but we dont feel secure, neither is the correct way ,makes us feel the authenticator is linked all time so people that hack the account will have no problems, even if u say is not possible, we players need to use a token everytime to log in , like a bank account, thats the only way we will feel safe.

I do love the idea of having to auto authenticate my account. Great idea I think everyone should have to do this. However, the mobile apps do not support my phone brand. Any plans to broaden the phone applications to other types of phones?

I current use a Blackberry Tour, verizon network. I have my World of Warcraft mobile app on it with no issues, would love to see my Anet authenticator come through here also. Email verification is amazingly easier to hack, since alot of people’s emails are already hacked and people just don’t realize it yet.

I’m having some serious problems with chinese hackers. Few login attempts in few days, it’s just a matter of time till they will get my e-mail password and I don’t have any smartphone or other mobile device to safely change passwords. I’m not completely sure if my PC is free of keyloggers and other spyware, latest scans are proving it’s clean

As few people before, I’m requesting possibility to ban specific countries from all login attempts. It’s nothing racist/offensive, it’s just possibility to exclude several IP groups from access to my account. Something completely private, not affecting the gameplay by any means

I got hacked last night, and after looking over everything I got no emails about changing of my password or log in attempts. I should have gotten it since I have emails going to 3 different devices (I REALLY like to know when I get something :P).

Now I turned on the google authenticator to add more security, but my question is this…..it is NOT asking me for a code when I log on from own pc (I assume because its “trusted” and authorized) but when I log in my account, my authorized network area is TOTALLY blank, as in nothing listed there at ALL. If I cant see anything there, then how is my own network trusted…..and following that how can I determine if someone ELSE is listed or not?

This honestly really really concerns me, as I have never been hacked before and would like to make triple sure I dont ever have to deal with it again in this game, ever.

I want to see what networks have been authorized, since I assume thats something every one else can see just fine. If none are, then how am I logging in without needing the authenticator code? and if I can log in without needing it….who ELSE can log in without needing it.

Really would like to know why or even how the Authorized IP section of my Account Management on the website is totally blank after being hacked. I havent seen anyone else post about the problem, so maybe its just me….but it is not something that should be normal, I remember seeing my home IP there before this.

I have no idea if the google authenticator is really doing its job without that information.

Hi… I’ve never posted on the forums before. I’m having a lot of trouble with the authentication email. I get it, click it and try to follow the link to authenticate it but it says failure no matter what i do. I’ve had to disable authentication which worries me because i believe someone a few months ago tried to log onto my account without me knowing…. So not having authentication is a big problem for me. This is my first paid MMO so I’m not too sure if this is unnecessary panic or not. Thank you…

I have been a guildwars fan for 6+ years. Put 1000s of hours in guildwars one. I waited so long to play guildwars 2 and when it came out there were many glitches. After 3 full weeks of fighting to get in my account and Anet locking me out because of the Email Authentication, I finnally had enough. Now.. many months later today.. I hoped that guildwars 2 have worked out their bugs and maybe i can enjoy this game ive paid for. Nope.. im still locked out.. I recieve no email for Authentication.. i constantly have a changing IP so ill never have the same one. ALSO i even saved the ones that were safe and here i am still locked out. I don’t even know my character name any more so thats a fail on me trying to get in manually. So now i have to contact support.. who in turn take days to answer me and its to cumbersome to even get in my own game.. that.. i don’t even care.. Anet failed me. Do I matter? I should.. people like me who played so long, make guildwars what it is. I serriously wish i could recieve direct help on my issue and get in my game.. im giving this my last chance. All im saying is that if this is so difficult for me (a long term guildwars fan) then how many players have you lost Anet.. i know 3 of my buddies that dont even bother because they can’t get in their accounts either. Why should i spend a week trying to get in a game they say to me.. I never had this trouble in guildwars 1.. and so on. I mean no offense but im telling who ever reads this exactly what my reality is and those who want to play the game but just can’t due to the bugs.

I am trying this Mobile Authenticator right now.
I could install it, link it to my account with the scanner function.
It generates codes as any other authenticator does.
GW doens’t ask for any code when loggin in.

Now the funny part

I have a ticket to support on this and guess. Some one there asked me on my serial number.
As the MA doesn’t have anything that looks like this it must be the game’s serial.

Do they really think I hand out my Serial code?

Reading all this I wonder if the tested this themselves before releasing it to us?

Hope they can fix this issue that a lot of us seem to have soon.

In general the idea of the login authorization system is not bad, however I am using DSL with dynamic IP meaning I recieve a new IP adress daily. This of course also means i cannot use ‘authorize this network’ since i would have to remove IP adresses from previous days manually.
To better illustrate the problem: i have recieved about 110 (one hundred an ten!) emails to autorize login since launch so far, basically for every time I open the client. This is extremely annoying.
On another note, on a few occasions I did not get a login request mail for an entire day or two, even though the system should send one on every single login attempt.
I do not have a mobile phone, using the mobile authenticator is not an option.

Suggestion:
a) allow disabling of the authentication (unsafe)
b) use a different identifier than the global IP, e.g. netword adapter MAC adress or some other hardware related metric, to identify a user
