Bad FPS (Not a new problem)

30 and below? Where, everywhere? What settings are you running?
EGVA SuperNOVA B2 750W | 16 GB DDR3 1600 | Acer XG270HU | Win 10×64
MX Brown Quickfire XT | Commander Shaussman [AGNY]- Fort Aspenwood
Most areas, like LA, WvW and events. When I’m just running around with few people around I might get 30-40 if I’m lucky.
And I’m running at medium to low settings i.e. Shadows off, Character Model Limit/Detail low. Shaders and postprocessing on medium and low, and so on.

The problem is the cpu, which has very weak single core performance and it is what the game demands.
i7 5775c @ 4.1GHz – 12GB RAM @ 2400MHz – RX 480 @ 1390/2140MHz
So I guess in the end I’ll have to get a new CPU :C I was hoping to avoid it, but I guess I’ll be going Intel then. Any suggestions for a beast CPU from Intel?

i5 4690k, i7 4790k, i5 5675c or i7 5775c will work with the ddr3 you already have, and can be overclocked to have the best single core performance.

Your best bet for GW2 will be a 4690k or a 6600k overclocked as high as you can push it.

I have an i7 4930k overclocked to 4.2 Ghz. 980ti factory oc’d in sli and I still get bad FPS in zergs and I hear of others having a stable 60fps with lesser setups. I find it hard to believe I can’t have the same :p even if I do have everything maxed and play at 4k

There’s your problem, there’s some settings that will absolutely kill your FPS in doing anything with a large amount of people.
- Shadows
- Reflections
- Character model limit and to a lesser extent, quality
- Suspersampling
Plus Gw2 doesn’t play nice with SLI, last I knew. Infact, besides stability issues which were plenty, it caused decreased performance.

Sounds like a good time to jump to Skylake, get yourself 16GB of DDR4, i5 6660k, good 1151 motherboard, an aftermarket CPU cooler so you can get the most out of your CPU and enjoy PC gaming bliss for years to come.
get yourself 16GB
16 GB of ram is a total waste of money these days, though. There’s no reason to go above 8 for gaming.

If you’re building a Skylake rig there’s no reason not to get 16GB, even if only a handful of games benefit from it. It’s more for future proofing, it’s not like you’d replace a build like the one I suggested for years. Plus it’s only £80 for 16GB.
The reason is that you’re spending extra money for literally no gain. If more ram will be useful later, just buy it then; it should be cheaper then, anyways. But, for the time being, you’re not getting anything from dropping the extra money on the 16 GB.
That 40 GBP (in the US, at least) would be enough to push you to a higher tier GPU, buy an SSD, grab a nicer CPU cooler, etc. There are just so many better ways to spend it.

Sure, if £40 is the difference between getting an SSD or not it’s obviously the better option. I was assuming a budget where £40 wouldn’t make oe break another component.

I don’t use supersampling at 4k, but yes, the rest I have up high/ultra…. and why shouldn’t I? GW2 might not play nicely with those settings, then why do they have them? =P I’m not arguing with you, I pretty much know that’s the problem… but I feel like with my setup I really really shouldn’t…. everything is within my power to run all that easily. So ANET just needs to optimize it better. I get a nice stable 60 FPS+ when the conditions are just right… I feel like I shouldn’t have to lower my quality/experience =/ I -want- to be able to see everyone, the reflections., all the shadows, and every little shader effect. IDK.. I can do it just fine with every other game… ah well….
Right now it’s worse, with all this crazy crashing going on I have to lower my settings further to help insure my client doesn’t kick me out at the end of a large scale event. I can’t play their game at the max settings they defined… doesn’t make sense to me and they need to fix it.

There’s not a lot they can do to optimize the main bottleneck, Dx9/single threaded performance.
That’s all there is too it. Until you can throw enough single core horsepower at that thread, you wont get 60fps in events and whatnot. Even your high-end isn’t enough…nothing on the market is.
GW2 might not play nicely with those settings, then why do they have them?
Because some people actually have the computers to handle them, at least most of the time.

Apparently not. And you’re running a relatively low-end CPU (~i3-2100 to i3-3220 level; better multithreaded performance but lower singlethreaded performance) with a fairly dated graphics card; it’s not unreasonable that you can’t run demanding games at high/max settings and get 60 FPS everywhere.
So ANET just needs to optimize it better. I get a nice stable 60 FPS+ when the conditions are just right…
Yes, they should optimize it better, but even if they do it’ll still be a demanding game. When you’ve got 100 people on screen chucking spells everywhere framerates are bound to go down

Then upgrade your computer. Simple.
I can do it just fine with every other game… ah well….
Such as? I’m sorry, but most new games aren’t running at Ultra/1080P/60FPS on that computer; even high would be pushing it. Even with my i5+my 7850 (a much, much more powerful and a bit stronger GPU) didn’t come close to that.
I can’t play their game at the max settings they defined… doesn’t make sense to me and they need to fix it.
That’s a super entitled attitude to have, especially when your computer isn’t really particularly high end; realistically, it’s midrange at best. If you want to max stuff, you need higher-end hardware. While the game could use more optimization, you’re also not putting your best effort in to get the performance you desire.

I think you responded to the wrong person. My build:
i7 4930k 6-cores at 4.2Ghz over clocked
ASUS STRIX 980ti in SLI
G.Skill Sniper 32 GB of DDR3 RAM at 2400
ASUS RAMPAGE IV Black Edition Motherboard
Corsair H100 Water cooler
Corsair HX 1050 Watt PSU
Sure my processor is a few years old, but it also still sells for $600…. so you got two posts confused.
Sorry if I sound entitled, but I didn’t spend all that money to be able to play my favorite MMO at low settings. I’m very proud of my build as I said, it handles everything else at 4k absolutely fine with settings maxed.
(edited by StoryMode.8256)
Oh, I definitely did. Sorry for that, I thought it was the other dude with the APU+6970. Definitely an all right PC, but far from the level where maxing everything should be a given where I can definitely see where you’d be annoyed.
Sorry for that, I’ll leave the post but other people reading it please note that it was a case of mistaken specs

Thx for the all the advice and discussion guys
Luckily I’ll be getting some money soon so I’ll be able to get an entirely new rig with any new hardware I could want.

I’ve recently returned to Gw2 after gettin Heart of thorns and I’m having a very strange issue with FPS. I’ve always had like 30-40 fps everywhere, with some drops to 25 when there was a lot of people. BUT NOW, it’s so weird, I open gw2 and it runs well 30-40 fps everywhere until I logout, the next time I enter it runs at 5-10fps everywhere, and I have to restart my computer like 534980573498 times until it works again properly. I tried everything I even format my computer and reinstalled everything but it still doesn’t work, can someone help me with that? Thanks in advance.
My rig: Amd FX 6300 six core 3,5 GHZ – 4gb ram, AMD hd 6850 graphic card, Asrock 970 extreme3 r2.0 Motherboard.
