I found that if I left my ranger pet in combat I wouldn’t log out. I admit I did this quite frequently when tabbing out of the game, then grabbing the loot when I came back.

I honestly didn’t think it was that big a deal. Now that I know this is a bannable offense it clearly wont happen again. It says the account closure is permanent, but is there a way my account can just be rolled back a couple days? I think this is extreme measures for something that should be a warning.

Submit a ticket. No one on this forum can do anything about it. I’m sorry!

You were, in effect, botting. Warnings against that is in the User Agreement.

In GW2, Trading Post plays you!

We don’t roll back or restore accounts because they were involved in cheating or exploiting. But you’re welcome to discuss the matter with support in a ticket.

Pretty much the definition of “botting” or unattended game play – tabbing out of the game to do other things while your character remains active, then coming back to collect the loot.

At least you admitted doing it, most cheaters are not so honest. Something to keep in mind for your next MMO.

Thanks for this thread. Now I know not to go afk or alt-tab on my ranger or necro when I have minnions up…. I too was honestly not aware this is considered botting.

I don’t play a ranger so I’m curious, are we talking about using macros to keep the pet in attack here or is this possible without the use of second-party software? Because if it is, I find the possibility that it could be considered botting outrageous? If it’s botting, then why is it even a game mechanic?

Rangers can either have a pet on Guard (which means they will defend you if you are attacked) or on Avoid Combat. As I understand what he did here, the pet was set to Guard and then he went afk. What the pet will do then is attack anything which attacks you. It will ignore anything which doesn’t attack you.

Do enemies killed entirely by pets even give loot? On my ranger it seemed enemies killed only by my pet didn’t give loot, although the sample size wasn’t that big.

Also, to people saying this counts as botting, if I understand correctly botting itself is technically not against the user agreement or rules of conduct; it’s using a third party programme to do so that’s forbidden (at least the only mentions of bots or botting I could find in them give them as examples of the type of third-party programmes that aren’t allowed).

What is against the ToS, in this case, is unattended play or, as the title states: ‘Circumventing Idle-time Restrictions’. I’m not sure ‘botting’ has anything to do with it.

Yes, they do. I’ve run through an area, had my pet engage something, and then had to circle back for whatever reason and found loot.

I’m sure this is more than a case of “went AFK for 5 minutes to get a cup of coffee”. I wouldn’t worry about ever walking away from my computer for a few minutes. It’s persistent unattended gameplay that is problematic.
