Hey,
after a long time i decided to continue playing the game. So i got a big update. Too big for my connection. I asked a friend to update his one. He updated his and played some hours. After that he gave me the game via portable hard disk drive.
I have copied it to my computer but if i try to start it it says updating…. 258.000 files left…
It is an updated version but i always have to update by downloading the whole game I think. Why is it so? And yes I´m starting the right file…

Its really downloading, not just checking:

From the Wiki:

“To install the game on multiple computers, it is possible to just copy this file and the Gw2.exe file into the same folder, instead of having to download the game again on each computer.”
The game from my friend is fully updated, but it seems, that my game downloads the whole gw2.dat.

I just copied his, so we have the exact same gw2.dat and gw2.exe but i have to update while he not.

I suspect it has to do with some localisation data. Have you ever played in a different language then english??

I think that this can be solved by asking your friend to use the command line argument ‘-image’ to get all localisation data as well (though the wiki is asking for verification of this command line argument).

Try letting then download start, close it, then overwrite with the full gw2.dat file.

Last I checked (a few weeks ago), the -image command does nothing. I only play English, and had a fully downloaded .dat file before I ran the command. Nothing else was downloaded.

has nothing to do with language. Tried everylanguage with deleting the gw2.dat and replacing it with the “updated” one.

After you copy your friend’s fully patched gw2.dat and gw2.exe files into your GW2 installation, right-click each of them and go to their properties. Make sure that they are not set to “Read Only”. Many times, when copying files from a portable drive to a local hard drive, the files become read only. This may be causing the files to have to be redownloaded as they cannot be modified.

I don’t know what the problem is, but I know it should ordinarily work: I’ve done a similar copy from one PC to the other a couple of weeks ago.
